Great haircut and color for the best prices. Especially in SF, it's hard to find reasonably priced salons, but here you get both affordable and quality service. You can book an appointment through text and sending photos of your desired hair style. Would recommend booking an appointment early because it gets busy. Got my hair dyed purple and was happy with the results. Turned out just like the photos I sent. Color was vibrant, she even styled it with waves. I asked for a color gradient, and she made it look natural with the balayage highlights. Bleaching does take a while, about 4 hours. Other customers came in and out, and their haircuts only took like 20 minutes. Overall had a nice experience here. Nice salon music too, a lot of vibey pop song covers. Actually so surprised how badly my haircut turned out that I had to write a review. I made an appointment for a weekday around noon and came right on time. I love my hair soo muchhh! I've always had bad experiences with hair salons. They either cut too short, rush your hair and it completely doesn't turn out the way you would be happy with. Michelle is so underrated in my opinion and for her hair prices and her skill you come out feeling like a million bucks like you just got your hair done at a super duper ultra expensive fancy hair salon. I've been seeing Michelle ever since I was in high school (10 years!) and will continue to do so because of her kindness and honesty as a hairstylist. There have been times where I've been to other hair salons (due to being out of state for school) but I always end up going back to her because she KNOWS how to work with Asian hair - especially if you're hoping to achieve a certain color. Cut: Her cuts are quick and comes out very nice. She's also able to replicate the types of hairstyles I want (face-framing cuts, layers, etc.) She'll also offer suggestions for you of what she thinks would look nice - you can take it or leave it but I always go with what she says. I went with curtain bangs this time because she said it was popular! Color: I was torn between choosing a lighter or darker ash balayage so Michelle said she had the perfect in-between blend in mind. She also mentioned that after a couple of washes the ends of my hair would turn lighter. I told her I wanted my roots to remain dark so it looked more natural when my hair grows back and she definitely delivered! I've done my hair at salons where it would cost $350-400+ for balayage, babylights, etc. and I can whole-heartedly say that I'm going to continue seeing Michelle instead. I got cut and balayage for $250! It's very hard to find a place as affordable and qualitative as her. I was incredibly happy to see my end results and received compliments from friends and family! Hmm have to lower a star if I want to be transparent. 3+ weeks later and my scalp still has scabbing that hasn't healed. To be fair, she did ask me if I wanted my roots bleached and warned me that it would hurt. I said OK without expecting scabs/crusting to occur. I also developed a swollen lymph node(?) in the back of my neck in the few days following my appointment. An online search suggests that this can be a reaction to bleach. The swelling has mostly reduced. For what it's worth, I have had a global bleach once before without these side effects. That time took twice as long though (8 hours vs. 4 hours), so perhaps this is the risk you run with stronger bleach (or is it developer? Am no hair expert). read more

This stylist came highly recommended from a friend. I finally made a last minute appt on the same day last week. That's a plus. (Why I gave 3 instead of 2 stars.) And she was nice. Here's what I wanted & clearly asked for: 1) Cut 1.5-2 inches off ends, 2) Cut sides of my hair that shapes my round face, & 3) Make my bangs even. *I emphasized how simple my request was. Did I get what I asked for? Absolutely not which was SO confusing when my hair was done. (I had dinner plans & didn't exactly inspect my hair, but I knew it didn't look right). She cut way more than 2 inches & cut it wispy!? Now the ends look really unhealthy when they looked healthy before. It's uneven with a long strand that needs to be cut. The sides are so short, cut weird & they don't stay in a ponytail!? And to top it off, my bangs were butchered & they're also wispy. I really dislike that style of cut & she just did it without asking me. Did I mention I have a round face!? What is the point of telling a stylist how you want your hair cut then they go rogue and do their own thing? It wasn't even busy with one person getting color done. However, if you're looking for a kind stylist who can cut your hair pretty quickly, has years of experience, for not too much, this is the place for you. I called same-day to make an appointment and Michelle happily took me in. I hadn't cut my hair since 2020, so I was in great need. Michelle has been in the business for at least 14 years I think and she's a great to chat too. When she cut my hair, I felt like a new person. I totally would come back to Michelle for a haircut. Gave myself some time to calm down before I wrote this review buuuut I'm still pretty upset. :/ TLDR: I came here to get a digital perm and it was a disaster. I am sad that my hair had to go through all the chemical treatment just for me to hate the outcome because Michelle does not listen to her clients. Do not come here for a digital perm because she does not seem knowledgeable or experienced. I've never cried over my hair before but when I went home, I was VERY close to crying. :( IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE 1. Even if you make an appointment, it may be delayed because Michelle juggles multiple clients at once. Not the best if you have a limited amount of time. 2. Do not come here for a digital perm. 3. If you don't speak Chinese, there will be a language barrier. You will have to keep explaining to make sure Michelle understands what you want exactly. Even then, she may understand differently or just do what she wants to do. 4. Because of the first point I made, this won't be the best for your hair if there are chemicals involved. You may sit longer than necessary and that could be very damaging for your hair. :( 5. If Michelle messes up, she will probably blame you and/or make up excuses. She won't apologize or own up to her f* up, that's for sure. 6. Cash only. 7. Not the cleanest place. It's cluttered, messy, and there's cut hair all over. 8. Do not come here for a digital perm. HAIR I got a simple haircut and then decided to come back for a digital perm since the price seemed really good. Although Michelle doesn't have any photos of her work (red flag), she said she's done plenty so I was trusting her on that and I really did want to support a small business from the neighborhood. I initially showed her a reference photo of smaller curls (via text) and she said she can do it but it won't be close to the roots as shown in the photo. I told her I know because I've gotten a digital perm done before. The reason the rods are at least a couple of inches away from the scalp is so that when the rods are heated, your scalp isn't burned. I just wanted to show her the type of curl through that photo. So day of, I showed her a new reference photo in person. I thought about it and decided I wanted bigger curls. In the reference photo, the top part isn't curly so I told her I want the curls higher up and as close to the roots as possible (keeping in mind that it will be a couple inches away from the scalp still). She starts work and says she's going to be using the longer rods that are a little smaller in size. I asked her if my curls will still be of similar size to that of the photo and she said yes. As she's finishing up the top section of my head, it felt too close to my scalp and I let her know and she said it will be fine. Well, when the rods were heated that same spot started feeling VERY hot (it was burning me) so I told her and she stuffed some paper towels underneath to help. Well, doing this shifted other rods and so other parts started to feel too hot. So she had to hold them up and then sometimes her arms would get tired and she would rest her weight on my head (unintentionally) and I would have to tell her that she's burning me.  Once that hellish experience was over, I was moved to the sink. Michelle wasn't careful so whatever chemicals she was using splattered onto my face and eyelid (my eyes were closed) and my scalp felt terrible so I was sure it burned. I get to back to the main chair and I'm like holy sh*t my hair is so curly and the curls are sooo small... Michelle blasts the blowdryer on my hair. Clearly, this is not the way to dry curly hair. I ask if she has a diffuser and she says no (not sure if she even understood what I was asking about). She continues drying my hair and it becomes this massive frizz ball. I told her I do not like my hair at all and that the curls are way too small. Then she starts to put repair cream in it and starts twisting pieces in bigger chunks so the curls don't look small but my hair just looked f'n terrible! I told her this is not what I asked for and then she has the audacity to say that I wanted small curls and that the first picture I showed her had small curls. Like...what? I clarified and reminded her that I showed her a new reference photo that day and she agreed to it. Even if I did want the smaller curls, she made them too small. But the point is that she should be listening to her clients and not blaming them for her mistake. She didn't apologize or anything and just kept saying that I showed her a picture of smaller curls. She tried to make me feel better by saying that these aren't even the smallest curls and that they are medium size. Girl, no. They are NOT medium sized curls... She said I can twist when I'm home and even put my hair up so it doesn't frizz. Girl, no. You're not supposed to do that with permed hair so that it can set properly. I am very pleased with the results of the bayalage and hair cut from Michelle. I've received many compliments which is validating. Michelle is a one-woman show, she's very efficient and the process took 3 hours, which i think would take longer at other salons. My only comment was that when it came to brushing my hair out with the bleach still in my hair, it was painful, which we discussed and she new from my eyes haha. For the price and efficiency it's definitely worth the visit. If you're looking for a spa like atmosphere this probably won't meet your needs. Michelle informed us that the best way to schedule an appointment is via text message, as she works alone, so it is hard for her to answer the phone. When we arrived, we had to wait a bit for her to finish with the previous customer. But the wait was within 10 minutes of our scheduled time. When it was our turn, my wife went first. Michelle was great. She gave my wife some great suggestions regarding hair management. She seems very knowledgeable and works fast. Before we knew it, she was done. I was next. Being a guy in what appears to be a salon for women, I asked her if she had many clientele who are male. Michelle informed us that she has both, male and female clientele, and she is experienced in haircuts for both. She is a great conversationalist, and works as she shared her ideas on hair management. Before we knew it, she was done. It took about 15 minutes to cut for a haircut for each of us. We were in and out in a half hour. Although she works fast, our haircuts look good. TDLR: If you're looking to get the color transformation of your dreams for a very reasonably cost, there's no place better in SF than Michelle. Long story: I generally hate getting haircuts or almost always never love how my hair looks after it's cut, and have never cared to go back to the same hair studio, but I think I've finally found the one. Michelle is amazing. Not only is she amazing with hair, but she really is also one of the most kind, good-hearted, sincere people I've ever met. I feel so lucky to have met her! Making the appointment was super easy. The best thing is to text Michelle to ask for availability. And if you're interested in a coloring, to send over some photos of your hair and the color you want. Michelle is the only person at her salon, and I realized pretty quickly being in her salon, how tricky it is, trying to answer phone calls if you're in the middle of working with your client. I had a quick simple cut at the beginning just to get rid of that quarantine hair, but the MAIN reason I wanted to see Michelle was because I wanted to turn my dark Asian hair to a light pastel pink. I was worried at first, because I wasn't seeing that many pastel hair photos on Michelle's Yelp profile but I'm glad I took a chance. Michelle did a bleach first. Then we discovered that while my hair had seemed like virgin hair, I actually still had some previously dyed hair from last year, that just didn't look dyed, but had been chemically treated, so it wasn't reacting to the bleach the same way as everything else. She dealt with that expertly, and bleached that part a second time. Then she put in the pink toner. She expertly blended it with purple at the top so that it's easier to maintain and grow out, seeing as we're still in quarantine! It's been 2 weeks and I still love the color! I've gotten my hair colored once before (purple at Eclipse in Nob Hill), and I am 10 times happier here :) My hair also still feels pretty soft and doesn't look damaged. Re: quarantine, Michelle is super respectful and safe. She has an outdoor space and an indoor space, and she always had at most 2 clients - one in the outdoor space and one in the indoor space, and she had the door open and masks on at all times. Michelle was just A+++ with my tricky hair - I'm ride or die with her now! 1. Hair bleaching - Because part of my hair was dyed black prior, the dye took longer to bleach out and Michelle did a great job with this too - she used high quality toner and did a wash in layered sections to make sure there was maximum time with my dyed section. You have to bleach it enough to rid the brassy/orange stage but not too much that the hair can't absorb a darker brown toner, and she did a great job getting my hair there in the most efficient manner possible. Compared to the other high end salons I would frequent prior for coloring, Michelle is leagues ahead in terms of handling Asian hair and textures. 2. Finally, I worked with her to blend my ideal color - she walked me through the different colors we could blend and how it would turn out and also wash out to look like - truly fantastic! 3. Michelle has worked her magic again! I asked for a rose gold/pink root shadow (partial root highlight according to her) and couldn't be happier with the results. CONTACT: Michelle is a one-woman operation, so she is extremely busy. There are procedures that are time-sensitive and cannot be stopped half way, such as bleaching. Best way to reach her is through text: 415-566-2873.I was able to text her for an estimate and get an appointment. PROCESS: Michelle cuts hair dry, so that was a very quick, then she begin bleaching my hair. It took 5+ hours since my natural hair is dark dark brown and took a while for the bleach to work. She was extremely meticulous with the process, and went back to rebleach certain strands that were more stubborn. For the color, she mixed blonde and pink toner to help me get my desired shade. MAINTENENCE: She warned me that light pink fades very quickly, but rather than telling me to come back to tone my hair every few weeks, she recommended some color-depositing conditioners to maintain it myself to save some money. These products are not sold through her, so she doesn't get any extra money from this process, she just cares that her customers are happy with the results. COST: My hair trim, bleach, color and curl was $250 (+ tip) on virgin hair. This will differ depending on your hair length and if it is virgin hair or pre-bleached/colored hair. If you want an estimate, text her your current hair length and inspiration pictures, and she will get back to you with an estimate. Keep in mind she may voice-text you after hours since she is working non-stop during business hours. Cash only.
