The price is beside the point; he comes from the era where cutting hair was one of many skilled crafts, not something you learn to do at night school. He has one of the most loyal customer bases I've ever seen, and after getting a haircut there, you'll see why. He is extremely responsive to whatever you ask for, and is adept at making your hair look full without feeling heavy. If your hairline is a little funny, he'll notice, and he'll make it look good, instead of just cutting it normally. Everywhere else I've ever been has felt like a standard cut. Like says, "Nothing but the best, from the best, for the best." Oh and I've had him shave me/trim my beard when I went through that phase, and it was like going to a spa. Warm shaving cream, a switchblade razor, a towel on his shoulder, the whole deal. I've lived in New Jersey, Arkansas and now Brooklyn, and I always wait until I come back home to get a haircut -- sometimes I come home just to get the haircut.

After I explained that I wanted a high and tight because I'm in the military, she consulted someone and then returned to tell me it would be $42. I was absolutely shocked. I understand it's a small-town barbershop, but $42 for a high and tight feels like a total rip-off. I've been to Joe's a few times over the past decade and have never been satisfied, but today was definitely the last straw for me.

One of my favorite books is called the e-myth revisited by Michael gerber. He writes about how small businesses need to be consistent in their approach and execution. He describes a time when he got his hair cut by a barber and everything was great the first time then the next time it wasn't quite as good. And eventually his experience turns poor. And he fails to go back. I didn't realize until now how much of an impact that book had on me. Today I got my 2nd cut and it was just as good as the first time. I can firmly say I'm done with the large chain chop shops and will only go here.

Today I found Havana Fran's by luck - I needed to go to the ACE next door - and they were able to squeeze me in close to closing time. The shop itself is a cute little space that the crew clearly care for. The service was absolutely wonderful and my barber was a great conversationalist who balances talking about dogs with quick questions about stylistic preferences.
