This was hands down my favorite shopping experience in Italy! This is where you need to go if you want that super soft Florentine leather jacket. When you get there, the windows are boarded up but there is a sign on the door that says it's open. The owner - Michelangelo- told us people have been trying to copy his designs, so it makes sense. Once you get inside, you enter a world of Florentine leather jackets and goods. Michelangelo was super helpful with finding us the right style jacket and could tell just by looking at us the perfect size. You can tell he's a master of his craft and was very patient with us. I fell in love with my jacket almost as soon as I put it on. The SOFTEST leather! I knew exactly what I wanted in a leather jacket before I even arrived in Italy. I only wanted a timeless classic black blazer, long enough to cover my hips and butt. But I also wanted to be absolutely sure that it was Italian-made from start to finish, not mostly made in a sweatshop overseas, and slapped with a few finishing details so someone could put a Made in Italia label on it. I started researching before I arrived, and it paid off. First, I researched what constituted real, genuine Italian leather. Boy, was that eye-opening. Then, I checked with the guidebooks, specifically Rick Steves, and I also checked online reviews. But I also asked our guide/friend in Tuscany and talked to other people who had bought leather here. What I first learned was that Florence is the place to shop for leather. If you can't make it to the leather factories and outlets outside of town, then you can still buy quality, Italian-made leather in Florence city. Now, there are plenty of places to buy leather that is not Italian or only partly Italian-made. But there are only a very few who sell authentic, 100% Italian leather products, and Michaelangelo is one of them. He has the certificate from the city hanging in his shop to prove it. He doesn't waste your time showing you stuff you aren't asking to see. For me, after telling him what I was looking for, he brought out 2 blazers for me to try. As someone who sews and embroiders, I know quality stitching when I see it, and these jackets had that quality, even stitching. His designs are proprietary, so you likely won't see them everywhere. The quality was so incredible that I felt awful bargaining with him, but still managed to get the price down a little, especially by paying cash. The prices were not like the bargains at the street vendors, but neither is the quality the same. You DO get what you pay for with Michaelangelo! I love my blazer and will wear it forever. My boyfriend was on a search for a leather jacket and since we were in Florence... we had to check it out. After extensive online research, our journey lead us to Michelangelo. I was a bit skeptical as it sounded cheesy (come on, the whole city is marked with Michelangelo and his history) and it's near the train station / market area which has a lot of questionable products and figures. We also happened to stop by when he had all the paper and cardboard up around his shop and had a weird, handwritten thing that says "come in, we're open" scribbled across. We were immediately greeted by Michelangelo and his wife right before the closed up shop for the day and shared what we were looking for. He took one good look at my boyfriend, asked what color he wanted, and picked the right size, right jacket for him. Didn't even have to try anything else. He went into great detail about how he went about this particular design, how he made it, how to care for it, his years of experience and changes in his designs... it's all there. His passion and salesmanship is strong and can certainly rub some folks the wrong way but I found it pretty impressive after all we've seen in Firenze; we went to the Leather School earlier that day so we had an idea of what good leather can be. Don't be afraid to haggle with him and work with him. He's definitely a great man who knows his craft. After chatting with him longer, he's a bit crazy with the storefront since he's concerned there are folks in the market looking to make cheap copies of his design. I love supporting local, small businesses and artisans so it's very disheartening to hear but you can see it all over the streets. It's his passion, his life's work and you can see it in his product! Highest quality Florentine leather at the best competitive price. When I say highest quality I don't just mean the leather, which is exceptional, but the entire experience. Michelangelo was a wonderful person who identified our styles and helped us choose but gave us freedom to decide as well. He owns and operates the shop and is not pushy and not going to try and pull you in off the street. He allows his leather and craftsmanship to speak of its own merit. We looked at some other shops, even tried on jackets at a few other places. We found some mediocre real "feeling" leather but there was poor workmanship when you looked closer. Threads pulling out, cheap tricks like the "flame test," Zippers that we're made in china or plastic and caught easily. The zippers on his jackets however were all Made in Italy. The leather on the jackets we got was buttery smooth lamb skin, strong stitching, etc. He had many other jacket styles and types there, also some accessories like wallets, beautiful purses and belts. My wife and I purchased jackets from him and we are so absolutely happy with the purchase. If you are hesitant on where to go or look in Florence for a good leather jacket or product don't look any further. My wife is short with an hourglass figure so sometimes finding the right jacket for her frame is very difficult. I have broad shoulders and I'm a tad overweight so I have issues sometimes as well. Despite that Michelangelo used a trained eye and found both of us exactly what would work within minutes of us being in the shop. He's been in the business for over thirty years now and it shows. Thank god he came out and invited us back in for another look. He apologized (which he didn't have to) and introduced us to his shop. I picked a jacket I liked and he looks at me to size me up. Here's the thing, I'm on the smaller size and I wear between a XS and a S, which make finding jackets that fit me hard to find. Jackets usually engulf me, but not this one. He picked the correct size and it fit like a glove. The minute I put it on, I knew it was the one. My husband was with me and he was thinking the same thing. He loved it so much he bought it for me (and he doesn't buy things for me...lol). To be completely honest it was on the $$ side for me, however, I'm going to tell you right now, it is totally worth it. It is just beautiful, soft and the craftsmanship is exceptional.
