Very helpful, pricing decent for a small shop. As far as what Jane D. wrote, she wants to support a…read moresmall shop but is unwilling to pay extra to keep them around. She needs to have her hubby ask the help at Hobby Lobby some questions. I am willing to pay the extra to keep the small shops around.

OVERPRICED! My husband made Maple City Hobbies his destination when he wanted to build model…read morerockets with the kids. I don't think he was aware of the existence of Hobby Lobby at the time, so he made the much farther 45 minute trek to Goshen to MCH. Hubby said the store was slightly dirty but the person working polite. He said they had a decent selection, so he purchased 2 model rockets: Big Bertha & Starship Octavius. After finishing assembly, the kids decided they wanted to choose different paint colors for their rockets as well as pick out their next project (building model cars). Needing to go to Mishawaka, we went to Hobby Lobby (HL) this time. Of course their selection is massive, and there were a lot of things hubby saw there that he also saw at MCH. His excitement quickly turned into frustration when he realized that a lot of the same products he had purchased at MCH were almost double that the price of HL. He paid $16 for a rocket (Starship Octavius) at MCH & the same one was at HL for $9.99. He found this to be the case with most every aspect of the project. Talk about disappointing! He vowed to only do his hobby affairs with HL moving forward. Very sad, because we always want to support small businesses.. but gouging the prices in such a way is what makes folks turn their backs on these small mom & pop shops, and steer more towards the big box stores.

Nice employees with a good selection of remote control products. I was surprised by the number of…read morecar kits available. Id love to see more airplane and ship kits but this is probably a very small market. They have a good tool selection and lots of parts. There are so many tool and accessory options out there it's hard to carry everything. The plastic Mosels could use a little attention but I have seen the section growing. To my knowledge they have rc car and boat racing areas which is awesome, but I haven't personally had time to utilize them yet. The pricing on all their products is the competitive standard prices and they occasionally have sales etc. It's a good place to take kids because they will always find something that interests them and feeds their imagination. If you haven't been, go check it out yourself. This is the only game in town so I would love to see more people visit them so they can grow and grow.

They seem to cater to the RC Car enthusiasts, if you go looking for anything but RC both service and selection is mediocre. My last visit was Saturday the 24th, I went shopping for plastic models, space related, they had nothing and in general the plastic models selection sucks. Also looking for supplies for plastic modeling, the shelves were bare. I did find about a third of my list and spent about $50. I went home and ordered everything else I needed on Amazon, spent another $94. I would really like to support local stores but places like this make it difficult.

I got to visit Make South Bend during one of its Makers Markets, which meant that I got to chat with some makers along with shopping. In particular, I chatted with an awesome jewelry maker. I wish I remembered her name. I bought two hammered copper necklaces from her -- two for $20 was a deal I couldn't pass up -- and she seemed so excited to be there and talk about her craft. Make hosted a soap maker, other jewelers and some paper goods from what I can remember. And the display at the front of the store really drew me in. There were a few T-shirts and tank tops that I wanted so much to take home with me. Alas, they were only available in small and 2X. I definitely plan to peak in on my next South Bend visit and see if they have more available. Make also hosts classes. If I lived in Michiana, I would definitely take advantage of these. Melton crayon art, pine cone projects, wreath making, screenprinting, laser cutting Star Wars ornaments -- I so want in! And as I told the owner, I love that she focuses on the crafts part of making, as well as more technical aspects, like laser cutting and Arduino programming. So many makerspaces only showcase technical arts; Make has a more well-rounded vision. South Bend peeps, find your inner creative at Make!
