I've been going to this doctor for more than a decade now, and I've never had any problems. In the beginning, he took the time to get to know me and provide proper diagnosis. We tried a couple of different medications until we found what worked for me. Now I meet with him every 2 to 3 months to make sure everything is going well. The man is doing his job. No, he does not provide 45 minute therapy sessions, but he does have several psychologists on staff if that is what you need. That is not his job though. The complaints on here are really ridiculous. Yes, you have to pay your copayment. Shocking! Yes, you have to call if you were going to cancel an appointment! Shocking! If you are going to a psychiatrist for anger issues, picking a fight with the office staff is probably not the best idea. That was the funniest and sounds more like a sitcom episode plot than a real experience. He has an awesome car and takes very interesting international trips if you take the time to talk to him. The only thing I do not understand is how he gets away with still only doing telephone appointments in the year 2023. He has a beautiful office in Winchester. I wish he would use it. Dr. Marcus has been a fierce advocate in the mental health world and in mine! I've been seeing him for well over 10 years now and the one thing I will say is that he goes above and beyond to deliver a high level of care. I have felt over the past 10 years that our client-doctor relationship has only matured and grown. He is consistent, thoughtful, and always goes out of his way to reassure me that not only is he there to help me but he is there as a problem solver. In his line of work providers are often pressed for time. Dr. Marcus never makes me feel as though I am a burden and always goes out of his way to spend the time that we need to effectively facilitate our session. Cannot recommend him more highly! If you are actually looking for a legit psychiatrist...run far far away from the old zombie behind yonder desk. Bottom line: he's mean. I give you exhibit A, B, C, D, E and F. -He schedules multiple people at the same time. -He is mean. -He only writes refill prescriptions for two months at a time so you have to come back to see him every other month. Horrible, Iresponsible practice. On my third visit I was told I owed 60$ after being told no co-pay my first two visits. No proper warning of this debt, like mailing a bill. I did not have it so he denied care. I am 43 years old and have never been denied care even when I didn't have the co-pay in all my life. He had changed my prescription on the first two visits. I had started to become unstable and needed this prescription addressed. I spoke Blue Cross Blue Shield the next day and was told he wasn't supposed to do that. He is in their Network and should take co-pay issues to the insurance company. He is taking advantage of people with mental and emotional difficulties. A sin. If you have a bad experience with this man please reach out to your insurance company, or a site such as this. read more

DO NOT GO TO MARCUS MENTAL HEALTH -- MARCUS' BUSINESS IS A SHAM! - MARCUS IS A DANGEROUS CHARLATAN! This man should have his license revoked, he is the very first 'psychiatrist,' who actually practices shaming his patients. I went in for anger problems and he shamed me for having anger! And then refused to talk about my anger. He too boot, comes off as an awful man and seems senile. He said many things that were completely out of context. "Dr." Marcus, or Michael William Marcus, told me that I "should have watched it" when talking to his staff, who are completely incompetent. The first therapy session was 90% about me and his staff when I didn't even raise my voice, I just got frustrated at a staff member who couldn't put 2 + 2 to make 4 to save her life! Dr. Marcus shamed me for 'losing my temper' upon a first visit and actually made a list of reasons why I should "watch out" and "control my temper" which is on the "verge of being out of control at any moment," and that "I need to be monitored." I am pretty normal aside from a pretty mild anger management problem, at least with regards to Marcus and his experience of me. In addition he refused to even refill my SSRI Celexa, 4 days before I discovered he had given me no free refills on that first visit! I am forced now to withdraw from 4 years of anti-depressants because I can't afford his $450 therapy session! Standard doctors would give me a standard 3 refills, but money grubbing Dr. Marcus made sure to tell me that I have to come in and spend money and have monthly visits, in order to even have a 30 day supply! read more

He took the time to truly listen to me without judgement and worked with me to make sure we landed at the right strength/diagnosis over time so I could find what works best for me. I have been a patient of Dr. Michael Marcus for over 3 years, and after reading some of these negative reviews posted here on yelp I thought I'd chime in with some personal feedback. Since day one of being evaluated by Dr. Marcus, I must say that I have felt genuinely cared for and my overall experience has been very pleasant from the get-go. This includes Dr. Marcus and his Winchester, MA based staff despite what others have said in many of these reviews. Prior to being evaluated by Dr. Marcus, other psychiatrists/therapists lacked transparency and honesty during my sessions and simply "danced around" the root cause of my problem(s) hindering proper diagnosis. Dr. Marcus was the first psychiatrist to actually LISTEN to me, address my situation and most importantly provide proper diagnosis with a supportive action plan to improve my work/quality of life challenges. Because of this, I consider him to be one of the most professional, thorough, caring and insightful doctors in Boston. On a closing note, he has gone out of his way on many occasions, providing above and beyond care by following up and checking in (even after hours) which validates his credibility as a professional and this compelled me to write this review. Simply put, at the end of the day I prefer a doctor who is open, honest and 100% transparent and that's what you get with Dr. Marcus. read more

Drug Dealer. Not A Psychiatrist I used to go to him in college in like 2004ish to get Xanax. I have joked about 'the drug dealer disguised as a psychiatrist' many times since then, although what this "man" does is nothing to joke about. Here is how sessions with Michael would go: walk through the door and to his desk, he barely even looks up from what he's doing as he snarls, asking what you want. You tell him the name of the drug you want and he writes you a prescription. No words. No discussion. I know It seems like I must be kidding and it couldn't be this bad (or good depending on what you're looking for) but I promise I'm not kidding. Other reviewers have written about appointments that lasted 5 minutes. Never once did I have an appointment that lasted more than 2 minutes. Actually, appointments last exactly as long as it takes for you to tell him the the name of the medication you want prescribed. I don't believe he ever, even once, allowed me enough time to even sit my butt in the chair. There is however one "discussion" that is had at every meeting: money... as in "hurry up and give me the money". No lie. read more

Dr.marcus is a really great psychiatrist. He takes you In sometimes fits you in if you need to see him for an important reason. He is good at reading people. He tough yet fair. I highly recommend him. All the negative reviews are only one perspective. Many people don't understand that many psychiatrists only write prescriptions you are also supposed to see a therapist. They help you with other problem or situations you may be going through. He really takes his time reading you and building a relationship. I support that. Some people read him as being mean when he is just trying to figure out what you need vs just drug seeking. He fellows me when I almost died he called to check up on me. He said he didn't agree with my previous dr's diagnosis yet he never provided me with a full psychiatric evaluation and just prescribed the same exact meds. You walk out of this place feeling like you went through an assembly line. They want your money, and you can tell that is the focus of the whole operation. Bill your for a psychiatrist, bill you for a therapist, all in one shot. I never met with the Dr for more than 5 minutes, but apparently he knew enough about me to give me drugs that affected my brain chemistry. If you have a change of plans 2 days before your appointment be prepared to shell out $100. Its not like hes going to be waiting around. Hes constantly shuffling people in and out and he just wants to bill you regardless if you are there or not. I think he might of got into psychiatry to help himself. He obviously does not understand people. He does not understand how odd and unpersonable he comes across as. It's 2019, and do you know where your psychiatrist is? A little light humor perhaps to ease the awkward transition into a more "weighted" topic. I'd like to point out that I chose that word carefully; "weighted" topic as opposed to "somber," "dark," or "miserable" topic. Through articles read, years of conversations amongst friends and colleagues in treatment like myself, and also members of my own family there is one thing that remains constant: very few people seem to be actually happy. A better way to describe them is merely less sad and anxious than they used to be prior to medication and treatment. Nevertheless, they're not truly happy nor are they experiencing the calm inner peace they're seeking. The reason I'm writing this is because people seem to have far more complaints than compliments concerning their psychiatrists. This is a terrible phenomenon because mental health (in my opinion) is just as important as physical health. Thus, I'm compelled to concisely and accurately share my voyage to attaining a healthy brain that thinks healthy thoughts. I'm honestly embarrassed to say that my ardent venture into attaining peace of mind was, in fact, neither arduous nor overwhelming. I simply got lucky when choosing my psychiatrist. If so, then I certainly want to let people know about him! His name is Dr. Michael Marcus, and he has been my psychiatrist for 15 years now; my late 20's to my early 40's. When circumstances in my life changed several times, as they do with all of us, Dr. Marcus paid especially close attention to what was happening in my personal life. He would then make adjustments to my medications that he thought would work best at that stage in my life; sometimes increasing doses, sometimes decreasing doses, and even the changing of the medications I use during certain periods in my life when Dr. Marcus felt that certain other medications would work better given what I was going through at that particular time in my life. Life has ebbs and flows, and ups and downs that are inevitable. However, I'm someone that's lucky enough to say that my psychiatrist was with me the whole way. I think a psychiatrist has to care about the person they're treating in order to treat them successfully, and I've been cared for by Dr. Marcus since our first appointment. There's certainly no guarantee that everyone will benefit from his treatment as much as I have, but I do know two indisputable facts: he genuinely is a brilliant man, and I've had a happy life for 15 years. read more

I have had roughly 25 sessions with Dr. Marcus, and during every single one of them I have felt genuinely cared for, and he has provided me with the utmost professional and personal supervision. I truly believe that the individuals who have made untoward and insulting comments about Dr. Marcus are people who possess personal agendas, and, unfortunately, those agendas include malicious attempts to destroy the reputation of a man who absolutely does not deserve such treatment in any shape, form, or fashion. I'm certainly not naive enough to be unaware that not all people agree on all things, but I am slightly more informed than most on the topic of healthcare in general. My mother has her own private practice and is a graduate of Yale Medical School, and my father is a scientist who is currently working in DC for the U.S. government on the dissolution and eradication of easily transferable diseases. My intention here is certainly NOT to boast of my family's accomplishments; I am only trying to share with people the minor amount of legitimate credibility I may have in the field of healthcare in general. Dr. Michael Marcus is a brilliant psychiatrist, and anyone who chooses to offer you an HONEST opinion about him will share that they also have been successfully treated and cared for by him. When I first walked into Dr. Marcus's office in the Beacon Hill area over 5 years ago, he spent well over an hour asking me questions that would soon prove to be extremely pertinent. He then chose the medication that he believed would be the most beneficial to me, and the man basically hit a metaphorical "medical home run." My quality of life since I have been under his care has dramatically improved. I'd like to remind my fellow Bostonians that there are MANY things written on the Internet that are not only outrageously inaccurate, but also downright slanderous. I have nothing to gain from writing this at all; I'm just not willing to sit back and allow a select few to literally trash a man that I know for a fact has made my life MUCH better. If his medical supervision has worked so extremely well for me, I find no reason to think that it shouldn't for most others as well. I shall inform Dr. Marcus tomorrow that he has my complete and total permission to share my email address with anyone that is interested in perhaps learning more about the myriad of different ways that I have gained from having him as my psychiatrist. Dr. Marcus is just as mean and money hungry as the other reviewers described. He doesn't care about how you feel he just wants to get paid, write you a prescription, and get you out. A few weeks ago I had to reschedule an appointment. I called 3 times on 3 different days and left a voicemail each time about needing an appointment promptly. It's been 2 weeks and NO ONE called me back. Today pissed me off the most. I called again to try to schedule an appointment and for once someone answered the phone. We examined the next week and a half, seeing which day could work, but mid discussion, the receptionist tells me to call back when I find a time that will work. She complained that there were people at her office and she needed to go. How am I supposed to find a time that works if I don't know the doctor's schedule?! I apologize for not wanting to take a 6:45 AM appointment! More importantly, not taking time to schedule me, a paying patient, is extremely rude. Dr. Marcus saved my life. I was 15 years old and had such debilitating anxiety and PTSD that I literally could not leave my mother's side. His office was down the street, and my mother took me to see him. Yes, he is brusque. He is cold. He's curt. He is going to tell you what you don't want to hear. Don't go to him if the "tough love" strategy doesn't work for you. Don't go to him if you are looking for an hour of time to work through your problems. Dr. Marcus is not a therapist or a typical psychiatrist in that the appointments are short and mainly about medication, but he never dismissed me if I wanted to spend more time talking about an issue. For ten years, I saw Dr. Marcus for medication and a psychologist for therapy. It certainly would've been more convenient to have a doctor who did both, but he is a brilliant diagnostician and I needed that. I was at the end of the road, I knew what was triggering my anxiety and had exhausted all other options besides medication. If that's where you are, go see him. He is expensive, and his office staff does irritate me sometimes, unfortunately, but I found it worth it because he is SO smart. Now I have no desire to sit and talk about my problems with a therapist (I used to; that could change) -- somehow, someway, I got better after many years and developed other healthy coping mechanisms I could use on my own. I now see him once every three months to check-in. If you know what's wrong, you've decided you need medication, but you're unsure where to go from there, he will help you. Don't go to him expecting a therapy session, though. He's not for everyone. However, I can only speak for my own experience, and I am grateful to him. read more

If there were an option for zero stars, that is what I would give this man. Like another reviewer said, he is nasty. I saw him four or five times: he didn't seem to pay attention or remember what I told him and he even canceled on me after I had shown up for a 6:45 am appointment because someone else came in (double booking?). I deduced that it was because my insurance didn't compensate him enough so I called him out on it. He admitted it and got hostile and said he "couldn't afford to take patients like me". I asked him why he took my insurance in the first place and he screamed that he didn't anymore. I left and filed a complaint with the board of medicine. His officicial response accused me of being an angry person. No kidding I was angry.
