What's unfortunate is I can't actually leave a review for any care from the doctor as I was never able to even receive my first physical. After running around, jumping through hoops, switching insurance providers per what the front desk required and having several back-and-forth between my insurance and something called regal medical group, I finally got Michael Sampson as my primary. This was all during open enrollment, however, the first availability he had was mid March. Three days before my appointment I was told by the front desk, they no longer accept my insurance (the one that they told me to get) despite being within "regal medical group" (still no clue what this sub-insurance plan is??) and I need to find a new doctor. Hours and hours were wasted on this, too bad I can't submit the therapy bill to insurance... read more

He's the best most communicative doctor I've ever had. His front office staff, like most businesses is maligned by disgruntled people who I can only image have had one interaction with them. I've actually known them for years and they have been amazing for years over many interactions and visits, not just one incident. Yelp unfortunately recieves more reviews when people are angry. People who are satisfied and happy with a business are far less likely to send in reviews. And when they do they often temper their star rating because a 5 is reserved for perfection. Angry people feel disrespected and will start with 1s and 2s even though they are only evaluating one aspect of a business. Unfortunately, averaging them equally means the reviews are weighted toward the negative. The reality is that psychologists will tell you reviews are often a form of revenge more than an honest evaluation. Often times it's revenge from angry and unreasonable people who are not themselves being reviewed for their bad behavior. So, take any review with a grain of salt, as they say, and know that a 4 star review is more often closer to a 5 than its face value.​ As a part of the human condition, people look for negatives as well. Notice how people click on "helpful" more often for negative reviews than they do on positive reviews. We think negative people are more honest when the opposite is actually true. Negative reviews are more likely to embellish and exaggerate to get their pound of flesh. Positive reviews are generally trying to help both the business and the customer. Yes, we fear that the business is creating the reviews. That's much harder to do these days. Existing accounts with a variety of reviews are hard to generate. And the regular patrons may embellish because they LIKE the business and are happy with the service and have found friends and even people they may now consider family. Those are all great possibilities and where I want to be. read more

I can't quite review the doctor, but since his front desk staff lost my appointment and then blamed me for not confirming I'm compelled to give them a low rating. It would have helped their cause had they actually written my number down in the correct order... Needless to say, they gave my appointment away and then refused my insurance cause I have a deductible. read more

I came across Michael Sampsons office and was excited to find a place so close to where I live but when I called today to set up an appointment using my Insurance (LA Care, Medi-Cal) I was told they don't accept my insurance even though their website clearly states that they do! The front desk staff is rude and downright demeaning, at the edge of insulting. They treated me without any empathy, and made a point to explain to me that the doctor's time is more valuable than mine. They raised their voice and reminded me that I was the sick person (thanks for the reminder!) I will never go back. Considering the quantity of nice and empathetic doctors and their staff around, I do not advise anybody to go there. read more

After browsing Yelp, I liked Dr. Sampson for several reasons and, needing a new doctor after a move, tried set up a first appointment for a general check-up. When I first called, the assistant said that it would take her a few days to get me an appointment (what?), and she'd call me back in 1-3 days with the date. That was definitely a first for me, but I waited patiently...for a month, to never hear back. Still undeterred, I called back 2 months after the first call, and heard the same - additionally, that it would take at least 6-7 weeks before I could get an appointment. When I never heard back from the second attempt either, I shrugged and moved on. Sampson might still be great, but he needs new staff. read more

My friend referred me to Dr. Sampson he was my PCP for 4 years before, I changed jobs and my insurance changed (wish he was still my PCP). Anyhow, I always found him knowledgeable and his diagnosis tops. He doesn't over medicate and he listened to me as his patient. I asked for amour type thyroid instead of synthroid, like many doctors he does not prescribe it. Other than that it was all good. And if Patsy is still there she seriously is the best front desk person ever. If only she could be cloned and put at ever doctors office. :) read more

I initially had Dr. Sampson as my PCP under a PPO plan in the mid 2000s and was quite happy with his style and knowledge of men's health issues. I had a change of insurance which he was not under but in 2008 I had health insurance again that had him in the plan and I definitely looked him up and added him. I've been a patient ever since. I am quite content with the level of care I receive. Pros: Knowledgeable, attentive when you are there, cautious, proactive Cons: Availability - it is very hard to get in to see him and impossible to speak with him on the phone. Fortunately, the importance of that to me is not too high, I have a network of other providers I can go to for urgent needs. read more

Great Doctor. Front desk attendant Jennifer is infuriatingly incompetent. I had to switch doctors because of new insurance. Jennifer's incompetence was evident to my very last dealings with her. I called his office Monday, a lady with a Jamaican accent took my call. I asked if they took patients with Medicare, she told me they did. But that there was a three week wait for an appointment. This guy is dangerous! I had what I thought was a good relationship with my practitioner; having searched for a new doctor for nearly a year I was so pleased that I brought two other new patients to him. His mother is delightful and we spoke frankly and often as two adults who are aging. In fact on the day in question my mom was sinking into the final stage of a brave, 5 year fight with dementia. Things began to go south when I declined three different permanent medicines for conditions on which we disagreed. As an alumnus of Act Up! I view my doctor as my partner. Dr. Samson? Not so much. When I asked him how he determined I had COPD (since this was the first mention of it and there were no diagnostics..that I knew of) he became outraged and started screaming at me about my arrogance and disrespect for him (!). Stunned it took me a minute to collect myself and returned fire on him telling him that practitioners are partners not bosses. Why is it that he doesn't know this? This inflamed him, he screamed "Get Out!". locked himself in his office and left me in the waiting room with his staff (newish and obviously startled. His mother looked as though this were familiar. I attempted to pay and go when out of his office he emerged even angrier than before whereby his staff protected me from him or the other way round - I am not sure what was going thru his head- whispering to me "just go, Joe. Please just go". And that was it! Yes, a state-licensed doctor can do this and suffer no consequences whatsoever. read more

Dr. Sampson is the best doctor you can find in town. That's it. He listens to you and really cares about your well-being. I know this is supposed to be basic ethics. I saw Dr. Sampson for a couple of years, then I had to move out of the area for 1.5 years, during that time they were happy to fill my renewable prescriptions. Upon my return to the area, I called to see if I could have my renewable prescription refilled to a different pharmacy because I was no longer in Silverlake, and the woman on the phone said that "every time I call" it's difficult for the office... to call in a prescription. She did state that the doctor probably would not refill it because he hadn't seen me in over a year, which I understand, but she seemed insistent, that I when I asked if I was being an inconvenience by asking that a prescription refilled, she said that I had been rude a year ago when I called. I had never talked to her before. I had talked with other women in the office that have been perfectly pleasant, but I was shocked that she insinuated that I was both causing an inconvenience, and that I had been rude a year ago. No doubt I was upset on the phone today. I felt a BIT bad when she said she was his mother, but no matter who the person is working, patients shouldn't be talked down to or treated with disrespect. After today's experience, while Dr. Sampson is a perfectly fine doctor, clearly the patient care doesn't matter when they feel it's "Inconvenient". read more

What a waste of a copay! I went in to Dr. Sampson for a regular check up and also mentioned that I had been gaining a lot of weight gain since I hit 30. I asked him about bio identical hormone replacement (supplementing with testosterone and thyroid to restore levels)... something I had been doing with a previous doc. He didn't seem to know much about it or believe in it. I asked him about an anal pap, something I've read that gay men should have done. He didn't recommend it... didn't even want to talk about it. I asked him the most basic questions about protein intake and vitamins and supplements for good health. He referred me to GNC, saying they knew much more about such things. So essentially he referred me to get my nutritional information from a high school student with a part-time job at GNC! Is this guy for real? He also didn't ask questions that even my last 70 year old doctor asked. He wasn't thorough. He wasn't impressive. Certainly not cutting edge. As I left, he chuckled.. "good luck on that... uh.. weight loss". I can't recommend this doctor.... at all. read more

I've been living with HIV since 1986 and have seen more than my share of doctors. In 1997 I learned I had Hep-C. When I moved to Los Angeles in 1999 I worried I'd never find a doctor as good as I had in San Francisco. The first two lived up to that low expectation. Then it was my great fortune to have picked Dr. Sampson's name out of a short list of HIV specialists. He has been *My* Doctor ever since. He is on the cutting edge of infectious diseases medicine and helped me transition to a better regimen for AIDS therapy. He successfully got me through Interferon chemo and cured my Hep-C. He always listens to me and never talks down to me. Finally, as a transgender woman it was a delight to find a doctor whom I didn't have to educate about those issues. I've been going to Dr. Sampson for the past 2 years or so for my check ups. Granted I'm healthy so I only have seen him a handful of times for routine stuff. I wanted a gay friendly doctor and he's good. Friendly and knows his stuff....and I like that he's not squeamish about checking "you know where." I feel that i get a thorough check up with him. I found his staff to be professional and polite and easy to communicate with. I recommend him to other gay men. read more

I don't usually do on-line reviews but I do want to leave my opinion about Dr. Sampson. As someone who is HIV+ for over 10 years, I've come across A LOT of doctors in my time and I have to honestly say that Doc S is definately one of the BEST! He is extremely smart and seems to care a LOT about what he is doing. And without getting too technical, he was able to piece together a medication regimen that not only works well for me, but one that i'm able to take regularly and with few side effects. Let me also add that it was Dr. S that helped with the initial access to the medications by way of a clinical trial. I have since referred two other friends (both positive) who have thanked me after relating highly positive experiences. My sister (who is negative) is going in soon for a routine pap. Let's see what she says. I do find Ari's review very surprizing! I mean...weight loss and a good healthy diet is not rocket science...see a nutritionist or better yet...hit the gym like the rest of us! It's not unreasonable to think that someone like Dr S. who takes care of a lot of really sick patients ( I used to be one of them) may be more focused on more serious stuff like the patient with life threatening pneumonia or meningitis. Or hey...maybe it was just an off day for the Doc. But, whatever. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, and i respect Ari for his. But as far as mine goes, as an HIV specialist, i would DEFINATELY recommend Doctor S! UPDATE: my sister just went in for a routine physical and she loves Dr. S. (especially patsy) I have been a patient for over 8 years now and I am very pleased with the quality of care and the professionalism of the staff. I pretty much only see a doctor for an annual physical and for the occasional issue. After not having a physical for several years, I researched doctors and decided to try Dr. Sampson. Beware as this is a MONEY-MAKING ENTERPRISE! Despite explaining that my insurance covers a basic annual physical, the receptionist insisted that the initial exam that Dr. Sampson does is more thorough and ended up walking out of there paying $230 out of pocket. During my visit I also requested ROUTINE blood work that is covered by my insurance. The receptionist then schedules a follow-up appointment to review the results. I come back in a week later and the doctor walks into the room as he's chewing his lunch and asks me what I'm there for. The least I expect is that he's prepared by reviewing my chart. After seeing him for no more than 5 minutes while he literally showed me the paperwork that had the results of my blood work, I was shocked when the receptionist had the nerve to say that I owe $100 for the visit. WTF? I told her that I could have just seen the results online and after making a federal case, she finally relented that they can charge my insurance and code it as a routine physical (which is what they should have done during my initial visit). To top it off, I just got a bill from the lab claiming that I owe $135 for the routine blood work. I've never had to pay out of pocket for a 1) routine annual physical that's covered by insurance, 2) routine blood work covered by insurance, and 3) to obtain my lab results. I'm one of the most patient people out there, but can't stand anyone that tries to take advantage of me or others to make a buck. Be forewarned that despite the "nice" front office staff, this is a greedy, money-making office and patient care is secondary. read more

I never felt rushed, and Doctor Sampson would always talk through my options and the implications of different courses of action, and really listen.
