I found out at 20 weeks ultrasound that I had an incompetent cervix and was recommended to see Dr Katz for a consultation and potentially Cerclage surgery. Dr Katz will sit down with you and spend at least 20 minutes explaining the benefits and risks of the surgery. I decided to go with the surgery since my cervix was measuring really short. Everything went really well and I'm currently 34 weeks and still pregnant. The staff and Dr. Katz are very professional and supportive, explaining everything with great detail. Dr. Katz is nothing short of a hero. He performed my preventative cerclage after a late pregnancy loss left us anguished. But he started his care for us the night we were losing that pregnancy - our doctor at UCSF texted him pictures of scans, and he stepped out of a dinner event he was at to talk to us on the phone. This is a majorly belated review - Dr. Katz is one of the best surgeons we have ever come across. At ~20 weeks my cervix was starting to open with identical twins - we were incredibly stressed. We were so blessed to see Dr. Katz a couple days later - he was so organized, empathetic and quick to take action. He put in a cerclage only days later that kept my babies in until ~36 weeks - which was incredible. Even after the procedure Dr. Katz came by to check on me - he is so well regarded by all the staff, other surgeons. Dr. Katz...I can't say enough amazing things about him. My family and I are forever thankful that he was placed in our path during my pregnancy. I unfortunately had a negative experience with my previous pregnancy at Kaiser, where almost nothing was done to save my child. The first day I met him, it was an odd but comforting experience if that makes sense. The reason I say that is because yea he could have read my medical records from Kaiser and gone based off of that but he wanted to hear from my mouth everything that happened with my previous pregnancy. I was so happy in a way that he felt and reacted the same way I felt and reacted to everything was not done and his reaction was so genuine and sincere! Dr. Katz really makes you feel really important and I really loved how Dr. Katz always made sure to see you before and after the surgery, to check in with you! During the surgery he is also amazing and attentive! He explained everything in regards to the surgery I was to have for my pregnancy so clearly and answered all of my questions. This doctor saved our twins' lives when they were trying to escape at just 22 weeks. Dr. Katz isn't like normal doctors, he cares more than any doctor my husband and I have ever met. He told us he didn't know if he could save our pregnancy, but he was going to try. He stayed after hours to do the surgery and came back before hours the next morning to check on me. He is probably the only doctor in all of the west coast who would've performed the surgery on a twin pregnancy when my cervix was already dilated. Everything you read will say it is a waste and is unsuccessful..... thank God Dr. Katz was willing to try! Once I made it past "viability" at 24 weeks, Dr. Katz cried tears of joy with us. Then again at 26 weeks, and 28 weeks, and finally at 30 weeks when he decided he was comfortable discharging us from SF so we could deliver in Santa Rosa as we had planned. When he discharged us he made us promise him that when the girls are big and healthy and running around in our garden that we would take a minute and stop to realize that those little girls are true miracles. Today Dr. Katz got to meet those little miracles that wouldn't be here without him, his knowledge, his confidence, and his patience. My daughter, that he helped me through my pregnancy with, is 9 years old so this is long overdue, but I think of Dr Katz's kindness often. After a couple of years of IVF with unsuccessful attempts and two miscarriages, I was referred to Dr Katz as I was having some bleeding issues during this pregnancy. I was a nervous wreck. Dr Katz was so kind, empathetic and supportive and told me to send him an email *EVERY SINGLE DAY* to let him know how I was doing and how the bleeding was progressing. Dr. Katz was God sent for me. I was in the 19th week of my pregnancy and I was asked to get emergency cerclage done. My MFM Dr Wong who did my ultrasound told me there are very thin chances I will be able to carry the baby, me and my husband were really worried and gave up on all our hopes. She recommended my only choice is to get emergency cerclage and she recommended I get it done from Dr Katz. She mentioned there is no one better than him in the country who can perform this surgery. By grace of God I was able to get Dr Katz's appointment. He instantly made me feel comfortable from the time I met him. I've only heard Katz being the best at what he does and now I got to experience it. He honestly is the best. We ended up delivering our beautiful girl at 29.5 weeks, which was truly remarkable given the circumstances thrown our way. Dr. Katz saved our daughter multiple times throughout the ordeal. I would give this man more stars if I could. Every doctor I spoke to would say Dr. Katz is the best at what he does, and now I fully understand why! In fact, when I was informed that I needed to get an emergency cerclage input, the doctors at the hospital advised me to wait until Dr. Katz got back because it would be worth it. They were on call if I needed anything in the meantime. I'm very glad I waited. A few stressful and worrisome days on bed rest waiting for him to get back into town, and we scheduled surgery 2 days after seeing him. FYI- he's done these on the same day for some depending on the urgency. He is informative, explains everything thoroughly, listens well, and gives you all the facts. He really knows his stuff. I also love it that he doesn't believe in going on bed rest and will do everything possible to avoid that. He wants you to live a similar active lifestyle as you would normally pregnant. I had the surgery done at 17 weeks, I'm 30 weeks now and still going to the office everyday, walking often (sometime a couple of miles a day), yoga etc. I don't want to get ahead of myself because I still have a couple of months to go, but so far I've been able to live a normal lifestyle. The last exam showed everything looked great and the baby is safe in there. We'll cross our fingers that it'll hold up, but right now I don't have any reason to believe it won't. He did a great job, my OB raves about his work and she's really pleased with it as well. I sure hope he's still practicing if/when we decide to have another baby because I wouldn't trust anyone else! Dr. Katz literally saved our twin girls by putting an emergency cerclage at almost the very last moment. We will forever be grateful to him. This is an intentionally long post as I want to get into vivid details of our journey. During the 19 week ultrasound, the MFM doctor said that my wife's cervix is shortening and also funneling. He said that cerclages don't work for twins according to the data available and the only treatment that might work is putting a progesterone supplement vaginally every day(which apparently works well for short cervix in singletons). We tried this option. We spent the next 3 weeks frantically searching for other doctors and opinions that could save our twins. Almost every doctor seemed to concur with the MFM doctor's analysis that progesterone supplement is possibly the only option. The 22 week ultrasound shocked us. My wife's cervix was 6 cm dilated and she could possibly go into labor any moment. By God's grace, a different MFM doctor met us this time. He gave us 3 options - do nothing and possibly have a natural miscarriage any moment, abort, or try a rescue cerclage with Dr. Katz. He said the chances of the rescue cerclage working were not great but Dr. Katz is possibly the only doctor in the world with the skill to make it work. We were very fortunate that this doctor was a close friend of Dr. Katz and we were referred to him immediately. We drove to the CPMC hospital in San Franciso which is an hour away. Dr. Katz did the emergency cerclage that evening itself and I am happy to say that my wife went full term. We did a planned c-section at 38 weeks.Tears of gratitude well up my eyes whenever I think of the critical role that Dr. Katz played in getting our twins to us.I hope that this post helps some one is a similar situation to us. Dr.Katz is the best! After losing a baby at preterm at 23weeks with Kaiser i did my research on Facebook and saw a group of high risk women rave about Dr. Katz from all over the world. I drop Kaiser as a hospital and switch insurances and fought my my obgyns to go with Katz. Katz took me in as his patient when I was 9weeks pregnant with my current pregnancy and perform a TVCIC, I am now 31 weeks pregnant thanks to Dr.Katz and even though we live hours away I decide to keep him as my high risk doctor, he is worth the drive. He treats me like family and cares about my needs. He's always telling me never to be negative that I will have a baby in my arms and now look where we are! In 8 weeks my schedule C section will be here and I will have my baby in my arms because of him. The most sad part is not seeing Dr. Katz till my next pregnancy! He is a wonderful doctor. Dr.Katz is amazing! I was lucky enough to find out about his TVCIC and he is the reason why if have my two beautiful boys. I saw him when I was pregnant with my oldest son he placed the cerclage, I opted to have a C-section and left the cerclage in place for future pregnancies. Dr.Katz's cerclage was the best I could have ever had place it carried me through two pregnancies. I never had any issues at all with my cervix during my pregnancies. If you have a incompetent cervix I highly recommend getting in touch with his office.
