I never leave reviews, but I feel like I need to warn people away from here. I had doubts immediately upon walking in--the office was so dingy and dirty-looking. Dr. Chang is his own receptionist which I found odd but fine. It was clear he wouldn't have a great bedside manner from the get-go, but I was still pretty shocked by his behavior. I had issues finding my insurance info (group # and account ID #) on the DeltaDental website on my phone, and he was SO condescending and rude. Instead of trying to help, he treated me like an idiot. Literally at one point he said let's go through this together and made me put my phone on the desk angled so both of us could see it and made me read each line and scroll through slowly. I sped up at one section because I had looked through the exact page already multiple times, and he said, in a blatantly condescending tone "Scroll sloooowly and look for numbers". At this point, I didn't even want to find the info because I didn't want to be seen by him. I told him I'd like to cancel and he said, snottily, "no one is going to be able to help you without that information". Please do not go here. read more

After reading his reviews, decided to cancel my appointment before coming in. He has sent debt collectors after me for cancelling an appointment. I hope more people see this and know not to book this dentist. He's been already described as rude and a thief. read more

I did not go to "dr" Chang but I did run into him in the hallway. He is EXTREMELY rude and inappropriate. They have a bathroom in the hallway outside the office, labeled "bathroom" and it's unlocked (but has a lock pad on the outside) I was working in the building and needed to use the rest room. As I'm doing my business, he just opens the door and tries to kick me out! When I ask him to leave because I'm using the restroom he continued to watch. Then when I try to explain that no where is it stated that the restroom is for the office, he gave an attitude and walked away. Rude, creepy, and dirty! Stay away!!! read more

Giving Dr. Chang 5-stars. Prompt appointments, never any delays and ALWAYS on time. Dr. Chang is very thorough with his examinations and will walk you through so you understand. Furthermore, I have now had cleanings, cavities and most recently a crown placed... All procedures go very smooth and I never have pain. He is gentle and frankly as I like to put it... "he's a magician with the tools!" Lastly, he is courteous and respectful, I love him! Highly recommend! read more

I came to this dentist b.c it was a provider with my Insurance Delta Dental. When I get to the office, the receptionist said that I was no longer part of my plan. Funny I thought, I never had a issue before this. My previous dentist had no issues whatsoever. This is where it got ugly. Instead of working WITH me to figure out what the issue was, Michael Chang the dentist was rude and quite simply an idiot. He even dared to question whether I actually had insurance, and even mentioned paying out of pocket as an option. Why would you mention paying out of pocket to a customer when the customer has insurance? Needless to say I left the office after his moronic suggestion. Will never go back and support a clueless business. As the other Yelper mentioned, this business doesn't understand how to navigate through insurance issues and has no customer service concept. read more

My experience was not good. First of all, this dentist has a receptionist who doubles as a dental assistant. (I had the feeling that she might be his significant other).That is, she moves from answering phones to handing him his dental instruments and to even holding some instruments in place in your mouth. Mind you, there is no hand washing or using latex gloves on her part as she moves from one role to another. She also was cutting into my gum with one of the instruments causing me a lot of discomfort. She seemed to lack any kind of training. As for the dentist, the end result of the work he did (just a filling actually) was okay, but he works in complete silence, tells you nothing about what he's going to do or what he is doing. When I asked questions after the procedure, he answered w one word answers and it felt like I was an annoyance. I definitely won't be back as I found a better option nearby. read more

This receptionist may be the worst I have ever heard. I'm not one to write negative reviews. All I asked was is my insurance covered, and he kept saying "I need more info". When I asked which info, he'd say "I'm not gonna keep repeating myself". It ended in 2 minutes with him saying to take my business to a different provider. Truly insane, definitely avoid. read more

I went through 2 other dentists before ending up with Dr. Chang and I generally dislike dentists but he even noticed a jagged bump which one of the previous dentists had left and filed it down free of charge. Dr Chang is very thorough but doesn't push un-nessecary procedures etc. I have so far had 2 fillings and he was extremely quick and the finished filling did not have any high points or discomfort. He had the insurance billing down pat and the claim was processed on the spot. read more

Fantastic!  I had a very comfortable experience.  Dr. Chang was exceptionally thorough and gentle in my checkup, and not only that, but I'd just moved to the city, and Dr. Chang somehow made me feel right at home again.  I'm not sure about the other older negative reviews here... But Dr. Chang certainly didn't push any treatments on me, but rather gave me some fantastic pointers on where I could be improving my gum health, walked me through my X-rays and took extra time to point out any potential future problems, etc. I'd highly recommend this dentist to anyone looking for a kind, experienced practitioner in the city. read more

I've been going to Dr. Chang for more than 2 years now and he's made the dentist experience great. I've had numerous check-ups/cleanings and a filling and they all went really well and painless. He is very gentle but does a phenomeal job cleaning and he has your comfort in mind as he is completing the job. I've recommended him to friends and will continue to do so. It's a smaller office but he has all of the state of art equipment and the job is done professionally. I've been with Dr. Chang for about 2 years now I'm very happy with him! He is very thorough, knowledgable, precise... he does his job very well, he's fast, and it's comfortable. He sends nice cards for some holidays which I kinda liked. He's very gentle (both with your teeth and in character) and friendly - I've had some great talk with him in the past and he's definitely open to conversation. He speaks directly on the subject of teeth in order to do his job as fast and as well as possible. He is the most able and affordable dentist I have had. read more

I never thought I'd write a yelp review to recommend a dentist but I've really enjoyed both experiences I've had. I first came to Dr. Chang because it fit within my insurance but now I will continue to go back even after switching insurance companies. Easy to schedule, you deal with him directly, and the teeth cleaning experience is as pleasant as it can be. 10/10 will go here so long as I live in NYC. read more

Friday, July 21, 2017. I arrived for my first (and only) appointment 10 minutes early and waited 20 minutes past my appointment time to see Dr. Chang -- no big deal. There was no receptionist, and when the Dr. came out, he informed me that it will be $300 for a general check-up. I told him that I had insurance and he informed me that he didn't take the insurance I had (Renaissance Dental). I asked him, "Then why are you on their provider website?" He denied that he was and so I said to him, "how else would I have gotten your name?" He again expressed doubts and asked me to prove it. So I pulled up the Renaissance Dental site on my iPhone, put in the zip code, and his name was the first one on the list!! And he still denied that he took my insurance! Maybe he thought I was desperate and he could squeeze $300 out of me, maybe he didn't want to do the necessary paperwork, maybe he is somehow listed incorrectly. But there's a few thing's for sure, 1) When I made the appointment, I asked the woman I was speaking with if she wanted my insurance information and she said "no, bring it to your appointment." So I could have possibly avoided wasting my time and further delaying the needed dental attention. 2) This dentist appeared to be completely disorganized. Even the form I filled out while waiting needs a total revision - it's layout is pathetic. A 10-year-old on MS Word could do a better job. 3) He needs a proper receptionist. One to screen calls for their correct information when making the appointment in advance, and to be there on site to process and handle the necessary paperwork, etc. Not having these things in place after being in business for apparently years, says there is something glaringly wrong going on here. 4) this office looks and feels unsanitary. At the very least, it is in need of an top-to-bottom remodeling upgrade. All these things together point to a dentist who is very stingy. ...Cheep with the employees he hires (unprofessional), cheep with his office (poorly maintained), and cheep with the time and care he's willing to put into his business to be a first-class operation. Although, I cannot comment on the Dr's actual quality of work because I never got that far, all of these other things combine to speak loud enough for me to walk - and you should too. read more

Dear Neighbor, A word to the wise! Take your teeth elsewhere for treatment. Avoid this dentist, there are many qualified and personable dentists in New York City, why settle for Dr. Michael Chang. 1. He is not a communicator. I, personally, like to know what I am being treated for, how it will be done, in what time frame etc... 2. Dr. Michael Chang works without a dental hygienist. He uses his untrained telephone receptionist to serve as his assistant and she is about as gentle as Attila the Hun. I can understand Dr. Chang wanting to economize in these difficult times however, his assistant has no right to be handling dental equipment and/or getting anywhere near your teeth. If a telephone call comes into the office, they have to stop what they're doing so that his receptionist can resume her real duties, answering the phone, making appointments etc...If the door bell rings, again she leaves his side and all activity stops. She then returns to his side holding dental equipment etc...without so much as washing her hands. 3. Dr. Chang acts mysteriously in terms of determining if and when he will perform the dental services. In my case, I am covered by a widely accepted dental insurance plan however, Dr. Chang insists on waiting unreasonable amounts of time to ensure that the insurance coverage is active. At fierst, I thought that Dr. Chang was being cautious, only to realize later that he is merely disorganized and unprofessional. 4. 1 800 DENTIST has dropped Dr. Micahel Chang from its list. I wish I had read other reviews before going to Dr. Chang. I have never felt so poorly treated by a doctor! He was rude and unaccommodating and didn't listen to me at all. I have been to a lot of dentists (having awful teeth as I do) and no one has ever dismissed my concerns or made me feel so stupid. He shouldn't be practicing at all. his receptionist, however, I found to be very nice and cordial. I will not be going back and wish I hadn't paid for what I paid for in the first place. read more

My teeth and gums have never been in worser shape since going here. I came in for a cleaning and Chang said I needed a filling. I had the filling done, months later it was still bleeding. He told me I needed a deeper cleaning for $300 out of my pocket, the rest was covered by insurance. The first time I had a cleaning, I didn't pay my copay till months later ($50.) I told them I would pay the next day after my filling because of my credit card. They called my phone 10 times and hounded on me paying them. I felt like I was cheated with infected gums and teeth in the end. Do not go here! read more

I had a good experience with Dr. Chang. I had a filling come loose and was desperately calling around for someone who could see me the same day. He got me in and I liked the way he worked. The original filling took about 15 minutes at my other dentist, which I'm guessing had something to do with it falling out 3 years later. Dr. Chang worked and worked to get it perfect, checking my bite several times to make sure it was done right. Before doing the work, he showed me my x-rays on a cool little screen right on the chair, and patiently explained to me the worst-case scenario based on what he could see. My only complaint is that he is so soft-spoken that I had to ask him to repeat himself a number of times. This may be why I ended up with the more expensive white filling (which I may have chosen if given the options anyway). It's possible he said something about it and, since I had already asked him to repeat himself multiple times, I didn't want to ask again. But overall I'm very satisfied. I'm going back for a cleaning soon and will update my review after that. My last cleaning elsewhere was performed by a sadistic hygienist (and this is coming from someone with no dental anxiety), so I'm hoping this one is much better. read more

I am very happy with the work done. I got a broken tooth shaved down / a crown put on, another small chip filled in and two cracked fillings cemented. Each visit was a max 1 hour and all the work has stood the test of time. His assistant always was there as well suctioning and wiping. Highly recommended read more
