My family and I truly cannot thank Dr. Chang enough for his life-saving work. In summary, a few years back my father's kidney function had declined significantly, which his primary care doctor had failed to inform him about despite blood tests etc. (this is a whole other story...). After several stints in the hospital and ICU, I searched frantically for a seasoned nephrologist and found Dr. Chang. He and his colleagues from Westbay Nephrology came to my father's aid and made repeated visits to the hospital to monitor my dad. The primary care doctor never visited my father once. Thanks in large part to Dr. Chang's expert care, my father's kidney function improved to the point where he did not need dialysis. Today my dad is stable and continues to see Dr. Chang regularly for his thorough care and expertise. We are so grateful for Dr. Chang.

Dr Sharlip's care and reccomendations led to living into his 90s. I have a friend llving in Canada. His doctors said his cancer was inoperable. Dr Sharlip was kind enough to speak with him. At my first appointment with Dr. Sharlip, I saw that he was a caring doctor. He took the time to explain the results from my blood diagnostics and the next step to be taken to ensure the diagnostic result was negative. He answered my questions and reassured me in the process that he is taking for me. Over the course of the next five months, Dr. Sharlip prescribed a 4K test and then a MRI, where the results were equivocal. He then prescribed and performed a fusion biopsy procedure on July 2nd. He said due to the upcoming holiday, the results would not come back until the following Monday. The doctor calls me the evening of the next day and wanted to tell me the good news that the results came back early and were negative so that I wouldn't worry over the holiday and weekend. I am fortunate to have been under Dr. Sharlip's care during this time. He showed the ultimate care of his patient as evidenced from his calls to me in the early evening and even on Saturday. I feel reassured that I will be under Dr. Sharlip's bi-annual care.

I was referred to Nephrologist dr. Toby Gottheiner because my urine has become foamy and colorless…read more Dr G learned my family's history of kidney disease, but was unconcerned. He assured me that there's 'nothing wrong' with my kidneys. He did not order any tests to clarify what's going on. I went back to my primary care doctor, who is really great. He ordered an additional test of urine osmolality with fluid restriction for 12-14 hours. That test came clearly abnormal: 372 mOsm/Kg with the normal reference of at least 850 mOsm/Kg. The test pointed to inability of my kidneys to concentrate urine, which is associated with kidney failure, or other significant kidney disease. Based on abnormal finding, I was asked by primary care to go back to see nephrologist. 3 months later I'm back to Dr. Gottheiner, reasonably expecting the differential work up on the cause of a problem. Instead the conversation turned different direction. Vaguely admitting abnormal finding, doctor started vigorously looking for an unusual dietary pattern in my eating habits. When that failed, because my diet is well balanced, contrary to his previous admission, he suddenly said that he doesn't see anything wrong(?) and honestly(?), doesn't know how to help me! Than he asked me, 'Why do you worry'? I tried to patiently explain that I've had both flanks pain, coupled with significant progressive changes in a urine. He said that my urine changes unrelated to flank pains (?). At this point it has become clear doctor wasn't interested in making any honest diagnosis. You don't have to be a nephrologist to know that flank pain indeed can be caused by kidney problems. I told him that both my urologist and primary care referred me to see him (nephrologist). He said that they referred me only because they 'didn't know what to do'!! Than he asked me again, 'why do you worry'? What was I supposed to say? It's like asking diabetes patient why would he/she worry so much about high glucose levels? And he is absolutely right in a sense: if doctor doesn't care, why should a patient get worry?? After first appointment, Dr. Gottheiner failed to order correct tests to evaluate the abnormal symptoms. At second appointment, when presented with abnormal findings (extremely low osmolality), dr G completely ignored them. Moreover, he ignored other significant changes (high lactic acid, anemia, peripheral neuropathy) which could be related to a kidney disease as well. Finally, Dr. G failed to order any workup on the abnormal findings to make a differential diagnosis, let alone any treatment. All in all, if you dare to 'worry' about your health, and need a diagnostic workup of your kidneys condition from a competent, intelligent doctor who cares, please don't waste your time and look somewhere else. Good luck!

Doctors are supposed to help us - regular mortal people - right? Not in this case... Now, I never…read moreposted negative reviews, but I've never felt so neglected by a doctor that I just can't help it. Sorry, Mr. Siegel. Thank you for all the physical pain you could have prevented me from. I have severe migraines, they usually last 2-3 days, and leave me pretty much non-functional. In August of 2007 I got a referral to Mr. Siegel, the neurologist from a regular MD. Mr. Siegel saw me and prescribed me Imitrex, which works great, my migraine goes away within hours, or a day at the longest. This medicine is prescription only, and so far is the ONLY medicine that helped me. I was able to enjoy my life much more in the last 2 years. On Tues 5/26 I called my pharmacy for a refill. When they stil did not have it ready on Friday 5/29, I found out that my request for the refill was denied by the doctor. Reason - I need to be seen. Ok... the doctor could have let me know that, does he have to use a pharmacy to relay the message? Fine, I call the doctor's office, and ask them why I need to come in. Why - because it has been over 2 years, they tell me. Well, not quite, I say, still 3 more months till August of 2009. Ok, then it's been over 1.5 years, they tell me, you still need to be seen. Any more words you going to go back on? But anyway, ok, sure. When should I come in? Oh, the doctor is booked today, and is leaving for 2 weeks vacation tomorrow, I can see him when he gets back. All is dandy, but... I have no medicine left. And also, I am going away for 2 months in 2 weeks. I explain that to the lady at the office, and ask her if I can walk in, or wait for after hours visit, or whether he can talk to me on the phone. Does he really need to see me? Nothing changed... At least give me one more refill so I am good until he gets back from his vacation. Or is someone taking care of his patients while the doctor is away? No, not really. I have to wait. She thinks about all this for a moment, and asks to have my pharmacy fax her another refill request. Which I request, and at 4:10 pm they fax it. I call at 4:30 to confirm they received the request, talk to the lady again, and explain the urgency of the situation. She takes all my phone numbers, and says "let me see what I can do". I call again at 4:54 only to find out that the doctor is still with the patient, but even though they close at 5 pm, they will call me no matter what. NO PHONE CALL. At 5:22 I get a call from my pharmacy that refill request is denied again. No promised phone call from the doctor's office, and of course, they are not at the office anymore. Once again, the doctor chose to have have my pharmacy relay the message. And now he's off on his vacation, and I am left to suffer, which could have been easily prevented. For what it's worth... Doctors are supposed to help us live our lives better, take personal care of us, their patients. Isn't that a part of the oath they take? If it's not, then it should be at least in every doctor's moral code. It's just not in this doctor's moral code.

The down side is that he does not have much of a personality and is very arrogant. At first he starts out kind, but I noticed as time progresses he becomes quite rude and seems almost bothered to have to do the follow-up appointments. Which you would think that he shouldn't be since he is the one who tells you to come back in a certain time line! I do appreciate his care and the fact that after 2 previous doctors I had seen, only he found the accurate diagnosis. So you have to weigh out your options if you are thinking of visiting him.
