Had dinner here earlier this evening. I would give it six stars if possible. Great ambience, extremely well trained staff and friendly servers that made good recommendations. I had a local tequila and a local beer that were both excellent. The fish soup appetizer was a meal, as noted/advised by my server. But I also had grilled shrimp which were perfectly grilled and delicious, as were the side order of mashed potatoes that came with it. Latte was tasty but needed to be hotter, and I just wasn't up for asking my server to take it back and heat it more. The most polished service I have received in Mexico not just Mérida. When our waiter addressed us my name throughout the experience, you have won me over. This is a cozy warm Mexican gem. Pan Mexican flavors with great music and vintage Mexican movies silently entertaining on the walls. It's busy and we had to wait for a table so reservations are a good idea. That being said, we were recommended to enjoy a cocktail kitty corner at their sister restaurante Bartolomé. Check my review for that space (fabulous). read more

Two of my coworkers raved about Micaela Mar y Leña and insisted I had to visit during my trip to Merida - so I did, and it didn't disappoint! My husband and I ordered Molotes de Plátano to start; it's plantain stuffed with cheese served over creamy Valladolid longaniza. It was delicious! And just when I thought it couldn't get any better, it was time for the entreés. We ordered the Costilla de Res en Miel de Mole, a braised beef short rib bathed in mole served with mashed potatoes. The meat was savory and so tender it came right off the bone. The other entreé, which I honestly don't remember the name of, featured a tamal and duck, also served in a rich mole. The combination of flavors were interesting, complex, yet unique - unlike anything I'd ever tasted before. Of course, I never miss dessert. We ordered the Arroz con Leche, but not a typical one. This version was deconstructed with a vanilla buñuelo, rice pudding foam, honey toffee and ice cream. Another complex mixture of flavors with just the perfect touch of sweetness. The service was excellent from the moment we arrived. Even though we showed up before our reservation, we were seated immediately. Our sever kindly walked us through the menu and was attentive throughout our dinner. All in all, my coworkers were right - Micaela Mar y Leña is a must-visit in Mérida. Yikes. I have been in twice in the last two weeks. I live here and wanted to introduce friends to one of my favorite places in town. The front of house is spectacular both over the phone for reservations and especially in person, buenisima! However, both dinners recently had a real attitude from a couple of the male servers. Last night we had decent service until the end of the evening when a younger server with glasses came over and slammed the bill on the table and in English said "We are closing. Here is your check." Granted, we were there too late but I expect better service here and certainly a more appropriate approach. He then took it upon himself to split the bill in half for 3 people and was frustrated when we were trying to figure out why it wasn't adding up. Went here for dinner on a Friday night with a party of six. My friend made reservations ahead of time. We were running late and let them know and they were ok with that. This place is a winner. Don't hesitate. The aguachile is truly life changing. It's a good portion too so it's shareable. I drank the reminder of the liquor afterward it was that good. Drinks with mezcal were great- maybe a touch too much ice. The service was excellent as well- my waiter was helpful and had good insights into what to order. I did get the octopus and it was very good and a large portion. Probably would have ordered more small plates had I known it was such a big portion but it was good. My best meal in my week in Merida was here. Need reservations for popular times, but they accommodated me easily in the afternoon. They have an exceptional cocktail menu, with lots of local ingredients and mezcals; not weak like some tourist spots. We had dinner at Micaela Mar & Lena when we were in Merida for a few days last week and had a great experience. The restaurant is really cool - cool decor, cool music, cool menu. The location is great - very nearby the Paseo de Montejo, surrounded by other restaurants and bars. The service was great (our service was really friendly and helpful), too! We shared several dishes: green ceviche made with fish (marinated with lemon, jalapeno, and avocado); esquite with added bone marrow; and dry noodles (fideo) with quesillo burrata and a chipotle/tomato sauce (with added shrimp, as recommended). Their menu is really cool - a little traditional coastal Mexican with a little fusion thrown in! Everything tasted great. We also ordered a few drinks, which were great as well. While in Merida we wanted to try some of the local seafood, since it's so close to the Gulf of Mexico. We went to Micaela Mar and Lena as a recommendation from locals. The location is off the beaten path but so is everything for the most part in Merida, but can I tell you how cool and aesthetically pleasing this restaurant is. It's so charming on the inside and warm, I wouldn't say dress to impress but dress on the nicer side. We made reservations, it was a Thursday night when we went and I would highly recommend making a reservation as it was packed. The servers were very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious but mainly focused on seafood options, which I love. Personally, to me, the prices were not crazy outrageous- obviously if you go to a smaller town or more of a hole in the wall the prices would be cheaper and more on what you expect to pay in Mexico but I still found this less expensive than the same quality restaurants in the United States. We ordered the tuna tacos- yum! The fresh oysters, they were big and full of flavor- these were more in line with what we pay in the US, I thought they'd be less expensive here. We also ordered the seafood soup, it was so good and I love, love, love soup. Finally we ordered the octopus and boy were we surprised, it was a whole baby octopus. We thought it would be a tentacle but nope, lol. It was tasty and a great size portion. These place has thought of all the small details. In the end we were stuffed but as a parting gift we got small bite size deserts with a thank you note from the staff. Such a great visit to this lovely restaurant. read more

I've been to Micaela like 3 times, the last two were like a yera ago, yesterday was a little harder to find a table on a thursday night, we were on a eaiting list for 30 min, qe got sat down, the place is incredible beautiful, the waiter was nice and fun, so service deserves better than an overall star rating but, the food: We ordered The chiles rellenos with leche de tigre, one of the worst dished I've had in my whole life, who told the chef that Leche de Tigre has something like sour cream ot mayonaisse or Ranch or something weird? leche de Tigre is Lime base and fish, this one was absolutely gross, I believe it was even one of the worst dishes I've ever had, ever. -10000000/10 Then the Lengua with something was also really bad. What an amazing meal. My server (Ian, I think) walked me through the menu and was very patient and helpful. I had oysters to start and they were very good, as was the sauce along with a drop of hot sauce. My main dish was shrimp and it was excellent. I booked this reservation based on the reviews on Yelp and sorry to say that this place is over hyped. I gave this place 3 stars because the main entree was a disappointed compared to the complimentary sample morsels provided while we waited. The complimentary morsels buillt up my taste buds and I was ready for a spectacular main dish and it was underwhelming. The drinks are incredible, unique, and full of flavor, entrees were sadly lacking in flavor. Arrival: Made reservations a week ahead and then had to modify the day before and called the restaurant, they had no issues with changing our dinner time. We arrived by Uber and our table was ready right by the entry. Menus are provided for every 2 guests. I appreciate the font is large enough that I don't need readers. Drinks: Our server recommend the Mezcal drinks and we ordered the spicy smokey one. It had a smoke ancho chile. It was a wonderful tiny bit of spice with lots of smokey drink that was the most unique and complex build of flavors and smoke. Wow! 5 stars. I ate the ancho and just incredible taste. Highly recommend. Food: We were given a complimentary starter of a plantain stuffed with cheese and then lightly battered and fried topped with a mole sauce. What a unique flavor and texture morsel. The crunch and the soft plantain with gooey cheese and then complex mole sauce was a unique morsel. Then we were given a complimentary broth. It was a complex broth with lots of umami that smelled like miso and then you could taste subtle crab. It reminded me of a broth my mom made when I was a child. It was wonderful. As my main, I was torn between octopus and the fish dishes, I ordered the new dish called red pipian with potatoes. The fish was mahi mahi. It looked pretty. The skin was left on the mahi mahi and was limp and not crispy so I peeled it off. The fish was tepid in temperature on the inside and cold on the outside and over cooked and flavorless. 2 guests ordered beef rack in mole sauce and I think my fish got cold waiting on the beef dishes. There was a side salad that was lightly dressed and the pickled potatoes was a nice contrast. The fish was underwhelming compared to the complimentary starters. The guests with the beef rack said it was just okay. We were offered a complimentary dessert of a sesame cracker with a marshmallow on top. The sesame cracker reminds me of a dessert I ate as a child and the crunchy texture with roasted sesame really complimented the pillowy soft marshmallow. My husband + I had the absolute BEST meal here!!!! It kick started our trip in Merida and is going to be so hard to top. Our server Brian was incredible + so kind! He gave us all the best recommendations for things to try at the restaurant + local things to do in merida!
