Entrance to the currently abandoned Marine Stadium

Do you remember the old MTV show "Fear"? An early reality show about people checking out haunted spots, I blame / thank it for growing my interest in urban exploration. The ghosts coming out of the Marine Stadium, though, would have a synth heavy 80s soundtrack, mixed in with Jimmy Buffett and Catholic massses. Damaged during Hurricane Andrew, it's sat abandoned since the 90s. As part of an effort to remodel it, I had the chance to visit this historical site with a group of photographers to document the current graffiti and views. The graffiti here is in par with that in the Wynwood Walls, rich in color, detail and message. The bay views - Brickell to the north and the bay to the south - are the definition of breathtaking. The exposed concrete - with proper engineering restoration - can be on par with a certain famous exposed concrete garage. (I will say, the exposed rebar and current condition does have a mad max, apocalyptic vibe for explorers.) The marine stadium is certainly a historical gem of or city, and I hope it it's properly repaired and maintained.

I love it here as it's more quiet. The bay is perfect for when we come wakeboard or just chill or have fun. It's best when it's a windy day and you want to escape that. On a really hot day it might be not the best spot as there's no breeze here. Great is the view on the stadium! Always people doing photo shoots or painting on the stadium:)

The Miami Marine Stadium was once a popular structural landmark in Miami that has since been closed to the public after hurricane Andrew due to structural safety concerns. Engineers have since deemed it safe and efforts are now being made (slowly) to raise funds to renovate and preserve the stadium. You can learn more about it here: http://www.marinestadium.org/photo?type=88

Save the Miami Marine Stadium! I have such fond memories of the Marine Stadium from when I was a kid in Miami...Boat Races, Concerts, and even taking our boat into the water and kneeboarding and water skiing in there! Now, well, it's a whole 'nother ball of wax. It's been left by the city to decay, yet it's only become more beautiful, covered in the decades of spray paint, falling apart, becoming its own gigantic piece of Public Art. Except that it's NOT public! It's usually guarded by police, and it's sitting there... Alone. This is an historic landmark! Preserve it! Save it! Bring her home!

I cannot believe such a nice building, with such a nice view, location, access and everything is left in such a neglected state. This could be a prime property to come to with kids on a weekend. Now it's a dimly a graffiti heaven. I would not let me kid 100 yards close to this building. Not sure why it's even called a stadium... waste of a time

Something that let me down about this place was not finding out about it earlier. For Miami artists this place is gold. Think you seen all of Miami art when you go to Wynwood you will find out how much more of Miami there is out there as soon as you walk into here. When we came there was a crew there doing work about were speaking about that someone bought the place is going to renovate it. A lot of art will be destroyed but if they bring in a team of great photographers and get most of it on film and are able to open the Miami Marine Stadium again and have pictures of the art in a small section so people won't forget about the art that will be incredible. If they choose to preserve the art or open the stadium either way is great, but do something because the place doesn't look like it can hold up much longer without some kind of work done to it and pronto!

This place is unique, don't miss the opportunity to go. From a year ago or so, the police its controlling the access, but the might let you in just to watch and take some pictures. Not a place to go several times but to see at least once.

I have never been inside the actual stadium structure, only the area surrounding the building, just to be clear. But it is a truly impressive piece of real estate. The bathrooms are great, there are water stations at every corner, medics always in sight, and as a regular festival-goer, there is not really much else I can ask for that Rolling Loud at Hard Rock Stadium does not already provide. The times I have had here have been unbelieveabely amazing and high in energy. The place is quite vast and it can be easy to get confused directionally, so a map is essential. The only notably bothersome thing is the process of getting to-and-from the stadium. There are no public transportation options that take you anywhere near the stadium grounds, as Miami Gardens is located more inland from the coast in a random section of town. Getting to the area via taxi includes to-be-expected traffic and at least $20 in your pocket if you're coming from the east. But getting home is a complete nightmare. Your only options are Uber, Lyft, or a taxi that will charge you $200 to take you 15 miles to Dania Beach. Every night of the festival, when 12 a.m. hit and everyone would rush to get out and call their Ubers, the Uber and Lyft apps were successful in getting absolutely nobody home. For hours it would be like this. The apps didn't work because of so many people using them all at once. On one of the nights I was in attendance, the show ended and my friend and I walked over 3 miles away (hoping our odds of finding a ride would increase the further away we were from the place) from the stadium on 2-foot wide sidewalks past 12 at night, searching high and low for a taxi sitting stationary in the surrounding neighborhood traffic that would be willing to take us to our hotel in Hollywood Beach for a price lower than $180. Once we were in the car, it was standstill traffic for miles until we got home. All of the taxis we came across before this either already had passengers in the car or were simply unwilling to take anybody at all unless we would pay an absurd amount of money. There isn't much advice I can give regarding this issue, because unless you are okay with leaving the event you paid for early in order to beat the congestion, there's not a lot you can do except hope you win the rideshare lottery for the night. Expect to pay a pretty penny and have your patience tested, while also carrying home some amazing memories.

Watching the Indiana Hoosiers win their first national championship was priceless and the empty ladies rooms were incredible!! What needs serious work is leaving the facility and Lot 44 rideshare. OMG it was a total nightmare. Someone has to do something as there were hundreds and hundreds of people just waiting at 1am for rides.... and that's after walking for a looong time just to get to the lot. Something is very broken with that!! We were stranded and traffic was horrible. We wound up leaving the lot and finding our uber driver on the main road. The ride share part of this stadium is broken. Fix it, Miami!!

To save time and money, it is best to pre-purchase your parking ticket online. Ladies should check the allowed size of their handbags online or they won't get thru security. We wore our special small see-thru plastic crossbody bags made for stadiums that are a little larger than our cell phone. It's a pain but it's the rule. The Cardi B concert was great and her fans were loving the many songs that she performed. Her background dancers were fabulous. The sound machine was working perfectly. For some reason, she was 45 minutes late in appearing but we quickly forgave her once she started her wild R rated show. We had seats at the South Florida BMW Finally Suite Level on the upper and final level, where we were very comfortable and they provided delicious food and drinks for us as well as super comfy couches. Great hosts. Great seats! Great time!

If you grew up during the mid 80's / early 90's especially in Miami, Chicago, the Bronx, LA you know the names: TKA, Lisa Lisa, Stevie B, the Cover Girls and Lil Suzy. Power 96 was the local sponsor and music took me back to afternoons in Westland Mall, sneaking into Casanova and other all ages clubs. Acoustics were pretty good; it's a good place for a 7000 - 8000 seat "specialty" concert. They had plenty of bars and concession stands in the middle concourse, and the bar food I enjoyed (chicken tenders and house cut chips) were not too bad. They had run out of bbq sauce, and just had regular ketchup. They also didn't sell mojitos but I did enjoy a well-blended Hennessey & Coke, and they did sell Woodbridge Moscato. One other thing that would have made it better is if they would have had an organized area for autographs and such. I did get to take a picture with LisaLisa though!
