Gosh, I didn't know what I was missing. This is a true IYKYK! Once you have visited Horrocks, you will return for life. This is a magnificent, rustic, unique, expansive establishment that offers a cornucopia of items. From floral, to meats, cheeses, wine, speciality items, fruits, snacks, vegetables, hard-to-find items and more. There is so much more! Things that stood out even though I loved everything about this place: -the vast selection of canisters of olive oils -the vast array of different varieties of balsamic vinegars (amazing!) -house made items in every area -house made popcorn with so many flavors, so fresh. -the many, many homemade soups: probably around 20 different kinds and delicious. -a ramen bar, what? -bakery -pizzeria -exotic fruits and vegetables and regulars ones too -the wine bar: sip while you shop. -house-made sausages and cheeses -house-made jams, jellies, local honey -extensive variety of spices, herbs, flour and grains - great service, very helpful. It was the most disturbing act of threatening and belittling behavior that I have ever witnessed in…read morepublic. The manager, Chuck Grinnell, was out of line concerning a service animal. He was uninformed and ignorant of the bi-laws governing service animals and chose to not look at the state of Michigan website or the Americans with Disabilities Act website that the woman with the animal took the time to find and show him. He got in the lady's face, raising his voice and attempted to put his hand on her. Only after the police were called to the farmers market did he finally leave the woman alone but stared and glared at her and her daughter (a vendor at the farmers market). He should be replaced with someone who has the best interest of not only the patrons but the vendors of the farmers market. Someone who is willing to continually educate themselves on the changing regulations of the state and local laws concerning the disabled.

We went on a Sunday, so it was un-manned. You can self-serve, which is so cool. You can pay via Venmo or drop cash in the slot! They will even take volunteer work in exchange for produce. Prices are up on their chalkboard and they have beautiful, healthy plants, flowers and veggies. It was such a lovely experience and I'll make sure to visit every time I'm in Lansing. We took home some flowers, bok choy and tomato plants.

In fairness, I could easily give it more than three stars, but I am largely comparing it to the Meridian Township Farmer's Market, which is more expansive and I prefer. In addition to the vendors, they also have live music, which is nice. If you are a student around Michigan State during the summer, this would also be very easy to get to, as it's in Valley Court Park very near to campus. I definitely enjoy this Farmer's Market and the produce is high quality, but the Meridian Township Farmer's Market is better.

I love Blueowl and Ding Tea is one of the best shops in the area, unfortunately, due to a recent experience, I can no longer support these businesses. I was planning on going grocery shopping at Fresh Thyme after going to an hour long class, it was a Tuesday afternoon so there were plenty of parking spots, and an hour is not an excessive amount of time to leave your car parked. When I get back my car was towed. While I appreciate that some Fresh Thyme employees were helpful, the manager I spoke with was dismissive. He refused to tell me who might have towed my car and seemed annoyed that I wasn't aware of the towing company this particular lot uses. His lack of assistance only added to my frustration.( I do not know if he called specifically or if it was the owner of the lot the manager said he was not at liberty of saying, but either way he was rude and unhelpful) This manager also was not wearing a name tag. I had to pay $326 (not including cab fare) just to retrieve my vehicle. This experience feels particularly targeted, as I have parked here multiple times and gone to class before going shopping without incident, often in a newer model car. It seems like students, who primarily support many of these businesses, are being unfairly penalized. Additionally, I want to highlight a concern beyond the towing issue: if your car gets scratched by another driver while you're shopping, it can be incredibly challenging to locate the owner. This isn't just a student issue; it affects everyone who parks there. Save your time, car value and money and support other businesses in East Lansing who actually prioritize their customers' experiences and values your time. (Plus since they have added the self service checkout they almost never have the standard checkout open, and their bathroom frequently has no toilet paper)

I just picked up my first box of lusciously green goodies tonight to kick off the 2011 season and I'm so excited! Giving Tree Farm is a non-profit run by Community-Based Interventions. It started as a community garden for people with disabilities and today is the home of vocational training and rehabilitation for people who have suffered brain injuries. You can find their produce in local farmers markets and at the East Lansing Food Co-Op [ http://www.yelp.com/biz/east-lansing-food-co-operative-east-lansing ] as well as in local restaurants. I love everything about this place... you've got to check them out and give their wonderfully fresh and healthy produce a try. I have been standing in my kitchen eating spinach and mixed spring salad out of the bag for the last 10 minutes.
