I've been going to MGX Barber's for 4+ years. My first appointment was a walk-in to reset my long hair to a professional cut to prepare for a job interview. When you're young and inexperienced, even a good haircut can make the difference, at least at that time. I was set up with Juan to reset my long hair to a short cut. I usually came in with some picture or goal, and Juan helped me figure out what I was actually looking for and different nuances about my hair. The vibe of the place is chill, professional, very "bro-y", which is what I was looking for coming from So-cal, where my barbers maintained the same vibe. Although I never outwardly expressed that, the barbers never made me feel any less or different for my demeanor. Expect hip-hop/rap (the whole gamut, from classics to modern), sports talk, casual disses and knocks between barbers or clients, work/life updates, and other banter one would expect in a popular barbers shop. There was even a period where all the stresses of settling in a new place had unknowingly afflicted me with alopecia areata (spot-balding). Juan talked me through it, cut my hair so as to blend it seamlessly while assuring me that it happens and there are paths forward (seeking medical help, changing hairstyles, reducing stress, etc). Thankfully, I settled down and the hair in that area grew back. Even when I moved out of Hayward to various parts of the bay, I occasionally made my way back just to get my cuts at MGX. Juan gave me an essential and professional cut every time I had a job interview or some major life event, and eventually cut my hair for my wedding cut. I don't usually write reviews, but I had to for MGX. I've had lots of bad luck with barbers; they either don't do what I ask for or they're great but then they end up leaving the shop soon after I start going. After months of looking for a new one, I found MGX Barbers in Hayward and Esaias is definitely my new go-to. He listens to what you want, cuts hair excellently, doesn't mind small changes (sometimes I may want to keep the front length, other times trim it), and he's just cool to talk to. But, what made me need to do this review is this: I was scheduled for an appointment Tuesday at 2pm, but on Monday, a family emergency in SoCal happened, so I needed to head out there Monday night. I needed to look decent in case of a funeral, so I called MGX and asked Esaias if he could squeeze me into his schedule last minute at around 3:30 and he did. He didn't hesitate, said yes, took time out of his day staying longer than he needed to, and came through in a huge way. He didn't need to do that, but he did. THAT is service that goes above and beyond; you can tell the other barbers would do something similar too, as they're all great guys. This place has my business for as long as they're around. I talked with Sam and asked lots of questions. I had not made up my mind and he recommended I look at the website. I could not book the appointment online and sent them a note. I got a call from Marlon, and we had a great discussion. He booked me in Hayward with Sam on Wednesday. What a wonderful experience. First Sam listened to me and answered my questions. Needed a haircut badly and I found this place nearby via yelp. I was a walk-in and had to wait for a little bit because all the barbers were occupied. Good ambiance; good, relaxing music was playing while waiting. My haircut was done by Gino. I usually get a bald fade with a comb over. I was really nervous because first time with new barbers are always good or bad. All I can say is wow! I can honestly say that I found a new, permanent barber!! Gino took the time with my hair, but made sure it was also done in a timely manner. We also had a great conversation. I felt great after my heart cut. I was looking at the other barbers cutting hair and how the other people's hair came out... all looked great and they got up from their chairs smiling! My boys cuts always come out looking nice. Can't go wrong with any of the barbers, they are all good. MGX's experience is 2nd to none. I don't mean this lightly. Having been to a barber for more than 13 years and the last 8-9 being with Gino from MGX, I haven't found anyone else that matches the skill set and the inter-personal skills. Why do I get chopped on regular basis? Gino's skills with the clippers and scissors are exceptional. But, one thing that he excels over EVERYONE, is he delivers true customer service. I can't count how many times i've sat in a barber chair and felt like I was just another cut. Sometimes from other barbers, never been asked what my name is, never engaged in any conversation, wouldn't apologize for being 1-2 hours late. I thought this was normal in this industry. MGX excels over the top in this category. MGX helps me look good and feel good which allows ME, to kill it in my own life and business. I came in lookin like I had just emerged from the jungle, full lions mane. I'm new to the East Bay n so hooked up with Luis for the 1st time n I'll just say I'm glad I did. I'm not usually too picky about my cuts, as long as the lines are straight and the fade is blended right, I'm good. But I definitely also can recognize when someone has legitimate Barrs, and Luis definitely does. Fade was super clean, but the line up, this man killed it! My second time visiting Gino had to call out sick, but Juan agreed to work through his lunch since I had made the trip from Dublin, which I really appreciated.
