The rolled tacos are my go-to and they are so delicious and crunchy and give out a huge portion of rice and beans! They have a large salsa bar with really delicious choices! My favorite is a medium heat green avocado salsa, it's something you rarely see and it's so good! Everyone is always very friendly and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seats. Do NOT order the California burrito. I ordered a California burrito today and asked for no cheese due to being lactose intolerant and confirmed with the cashier twice but there was still cheese. On the board it also said it would have pico de gallo in it but it was just meat, French fries, and cheese. I was excited to try a new place but unfortunately will not be coming back. read more

A great little taqueria! Everything was quite nice and we enjoyed all of the food. I would do 3.5 stars, but Yelp doesn't do 1/2 stars. The service was friendly and pretty quick and prices were fair. I loved the adobada taco but the crunchy beef taco lacked a bit of flavor in the beef. Chips were freshly made and we also quite nice. The red chilaquiles are my favorite thing on the menu! VERY SPICY. Not for the weak. Even I usually order an extra side of sour cream to contain the heat. I've tried the green chilaquiles and those are flavorful & the eggs on top are always cooked to perfection. The rice & beans don't miss either. Really wanted carne asada chips for Cinco de Mayo but they didn't have the correct size available due to supply shortages... Ended up getting rolled tacos with all the fixings. Was able to order ahead. Pick up and leave. I enjoyed the rolled tacos. Perfectly fried and crispy. Just the right amount of cheese, guacamole and lettuce. Their hot sauce is really tasty too! The burritos are big and have a good amount of filling. However, it's on the slightly pricy side of Mexican food. It's not restaurant prices but about $2 more than I would usually spend. However, location is good, they're fast, and the food hits the spot. read more

Mexico Viejo is one of my fav lunch spots!!! We go here all the time and determined that their extra hot sauce is our FAVORITE - it has a great blend of heat and flavor! It can get busy around lunch time, but you can also call in orders ahead of time (which we often do) and they have it ready when you get there. We really love their Colorado burrito and rolled tacos - the burrito is the size of my entire forearm! There's limited seating inside of the restaurant with some tables out front that they share with neighboring restaurants. One thing I really want to add is how sweet the woman is that works the register/answers the phone. She has always been so kind, patient, and hard-working. She's there every time we come in and always smiles and asks how we're doing. We love supporting this business and appreciate the quality and consistency in their food! PS. I want to love this place because I remember the food was good, but it clearly caters to the weekday lunch crowd. I've been a victim of driving over there several times assuming they would be open on Sunday, but they aren't and haven't updated the Yelp hours (though I've requested this). They also close at 5pm on Saturdays. The only Taco shop in the area that is completely unavailable on Sundays and Saturday evenings. It's pretty disappointing. read more

I grew up going to a Mexico viejo in carlsbad of the 78 and this location is nothing like that. This one is very small and the prices don't make it worth it to try. read more

In this hyper competitive market, Mexico Viejo is top tier in taste. My personal favorite is the Pollo Asado burrito, with any of the breakfast burritos in second. I agree with the ROTD on this place. Mexico Viejo is made fresh and absolutely served piping hot! You probably don't want to come here if you're can't-wait-to-get-food-in-your-mouth hungry. I did and I'm definitely glad I'm not verbalizing this review because I burnt the sh** out of my tongue. Besides the self-inflicted injury I suffered here, I'd say it's a pretty solid little taqueria. Good burritos and a pretty solid shrimp taco. I've only been twice, but I'd definitely say it's above average in comparison to other taco shops. The food doesn't come out super fast, so if you're in a hurry don't expect a super speedy completion of your order. I did not get a chance to try a lot of food items I just had the rolled tacos with guacamole. There is a bit too much guacamole on the tacos but they were fresh and delicious. Great Mexican food at a great price! Everything here is pretty much $10 or under and its made fresh so its legit piping hot when you get it. My co-workers were like 10 mins into eating their burritos and they were still steaming. I ordered the carne asada burrito (~$8) which came with grilled beef and salsa. It was about the length of my forearms and definitely manageable in one sitting if you can eat a good amount. They were very generous with their beef as well. I also liked how they had a mini salsa bar - the red salsa was really spicy, I only advise if you can handle your spice! They also charge you if you don't pay with cash so try to bring cash if you can! read more

Went here on my lunch break, after being recommended by a friend. I was looking for some authentic Mexican food around north/east Carlsbad and this place is it. So, I think everyone knows by now you don't go to a Mexican food taco shop and don't expect good service. That definitely applies to this place (not as bad as Alejandro's in the village) though. The parking lot is kind of annoying, but plenty of parking just not close by. It's a decent size, parties of about 8 the largest I would say. Pero, you walk in and the teenage kid at the register will put his cellphone down as soon as he sees you...idk about you but that's respect. The food came out really fast, we ordered for there as well as some orders to go. I had the chimichanga with no meat and it came with a huuuge blob of guacamole and crema! If you a fatty like myself then you can agree when I say I am always down for a place that isn't stingy with their sour cream and guacamole. My amigita got the salsa breakfast burrito with guacamole and she said it was delicious but was missing a little something. By the time she scarfed she realized it's missing potatoes...ahhh The pricing is really good for the portions.
