(So much better than the other place in town recommended by yelp, jalapeño something or other, which was big and had a packed parking lot but from all the pictures it's clear to be cheap bland Texmex) I'm glad we kept driving and found this spot. Well, everything I read about this place turned out to be accurate. It was definitely worth the wait and definitely worth getting a little bit lost to find my way here! Next time we pass through here I would definitely call the order in via phone, as I know that would've cut down the wait time significantly. They were absolutely swamped on a Saturday night! I ordered the Hawaiina plate for the hubby, along with some Chicken Flautas to share, a Cheese Chile Relleno which is not my favorite but I think that is the only kind they make...2 Beef Gorditas. It doesn't sound like they use a lot of Cilantro even though the pictures show quite a bit on almost every plate. The young lady assured me that most everything comes with tomato onion and sour cream. The hubby prefers flour tortillas so that is what he got with his meal. His meal was very unique and was a mixture of tender fajita beef and chicken liberally sprinkled with cooked bacon topped with cheese. Easily eaten with tortillas but he enjoyed just eating it with a fork. He said it was very rich but delicious!!! They use a good quality flour tortilla but it is not homemade. I was the lucky one! My relleno came with corn tortillas per my request and they were homemade indeed and yes absolutely divine! The Red sauce had a lot of heat to it so I ended up saving it for when I get home so I have plenty of beverages should it be as hot as the first bite felt! It was sure delicious! The taquitos-Which is my name for them, (they are calling them Flautas,but in my opinion they were rolled small and tight and stuffed with delicious seasoned chicken. Had red and green sauce that accompanied them for dipping. Also had some shredded lettuce and then in a couple of thin slices of tomato and sour cream. These things were absolutely delicious and I ate every one of them! I didn't even share!!! The Gorditas were absolutely fabulous. So fresh, had just been put together, nice and warm and a very satisfying comfort food. Next time I will definitely try the sopas. Very good, and just the right amount of food for lunch. Don't let the outside throw you off--the food is delicious. Authentic Mexican food here, no Tex-Mex. We both had the cheese enchiladas with red sauce. (They bring out both sauces as well, but the green has quite a kick.) Would be four stars but the second time the waitress gave us a ration of shit about wanting some menus, lied and said they did not have menus. Five minutes later she is handing out menus like everyone gets them, not only to us but also to other tables. Not sure what her problem was. The tacos were yummy, else we would not have eaten there twice in two days. Very nice surprise here as we passed through Mount Pleasant. Had a little bit of difficulty finding the place but when we did, it had a lot of cars parked outside - a good sign. We were offered a basket of very crispy chips with a warm, chili-type salsa. Great starter. We ordered the Enchilada Verdi Rojas with chicken and the Carne Asada tacos with corn tortilla. The enchiladas were delicious - ordered it with red sauce. Topped with fresh veggies. Came with beans and rice. The 5 tacos were topped with cilantro and fresh onions with fresh lime on the side. If you are wanting good Mexican Food that is 100% authentic (not Tex-Mex) then this is the place to go. It is a very unassuming place right off the main drag in Mount Pleasant, but it is packed with some of the best Mexican Food in East Texas. If you are traveling along the I-30 corridor, it is well worth the detour about 5 minutes into town for some fantastic food! I had the barbacoa tacos, and let me say this from the onset, they do not have crunchy tacos in this place. This is authentic Mexican food, and in Mexico, crunchy tacos are not part of the cuisine. Anyways, the seasonings were fantastic, and the meat not dry. The rice that came with it, full of flavor and spices, and everything I had hoped for. The chips and salsa are totally handmade. No bag chips that are warmed up and put in front of you. These are corn tortillas that some Abuelita in the cocina is cutting up and frying by hand. Also, the corn tortillas I HIGHLY recommend as they are handmade in this place. I had half corn and half flour, and while I am typically partial to flour with my barbacoa, the corn was infinitely better. The staff are friendly, and as a gringo, I was in the minority in this place. At the risk of sounding politically incorrect (and frankly I don't care if I am), when you see a bunch of Latinos in a restaurant, it's because the food is good. The outside is not special but the service was quick and friendly. We were immediately served chips and salsa. We ordered the beef enchiladas verde. Nice to have beef that wasn't hamburger. My husband ordered a shrimp cocktail and they didn't bring it and it was a huge source of confusion to get it. And this is when things got interesting...my husband went to pay and the guy flipped the ticket over and gave him an amount. An incorrect amount. Over ten dollars more than what we owed. If he hadn't added it up in his head, he would've paid more. He got the distinct impression it was intentional. Driving along I-30 past Mount Pleasant, these road trippers needed somewhere to stop for lunch. I'm so happy that Yelp brought us to Mexico Restaurant. As other reviewers have mentioned, it's quite unassuming from the outside. But inside, the restaurant was very clean, the service was friendly, and the food was authentic and spectacular. The server brought over warm homemade chips and a little dish of salsa for each of us (also served warm). It was spicy and delicious. My husband ordered the chicken fajitas with corn tortillas. The corn tortillas were the best we've ever tried--possibly even better than we've had in Mexico. They were thicker than typical corn tortillas and pillowy soft. I had the enchiladas verdes with cheese, served with rice and refried beans and topped with shredded lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado, and queso fresco, and they were perfect. The server also brought us squeeze bottles of homemade salsa verde and salsa roja, and they were both excellent accompaniments to our meals. All in all, we couldn't be happier with this lunch stop! I can't say when we'll be back in the Mount Pleasant area, but I know where we're coming to eat when we we make it back! read more
