Ok... I was raised in La Junta, Co. I grew up eating at a place called Mexico City Cafe. Totally a family run place for like 40 hrs that I know of. My father was a good chef. I grew up eating tamales from Grandma Carrillo. The town grandma. The food here was different than I've ever had. It was good, hot and well presented. BUT, We asked about the green chili there and got a sample to try. My brother and I know our stuff about green chili. We've never had green chili like theirs. It wasn't green chili in our sense of the word. It was more like tons of sour cream with flavorings in it. No heat and (in my opinion) kind of blah. The Chipotle sauce on the enchiladas was very different as well. Same sort cream base. When my brother and I first asked about the chili, in all honesty the waitress had no clue what we meant by green chili. I'm thinking that their versions are related to different recipes from different parts of Mexico. If that makes sense. but.. don't get me wrong, it was very good. Nice place to eat.. but give me some more common Mexican food. There was not ONE TAMALE in the menu. No sopapillas. No vermicelli. No chili con carne. Ordered the Carne Asada and LOVED IT. I was so worried I wouldn't be able to find good Mexican food in CO Springs, and this location made sure there was no reason to. They gave me extra spicy salsa I fell in love with and their queso is more than reason enough to check it out. There are so many options. Margaritas are HUGE and delicious. Miguel does it right, the food is fresh, cooked perfectly. The service is great! My food was brought out to us quickly. But overall the food really is fantastic. I worked in the restaurant industry for a long time and can be pretty harsh on places. Mexico real deserves every bit of credit. My server was great, tipped him a little extra. Good food and friendly staff! This was our second visit here under the new management. The decor, music, and decorations are very authentic. Everything was very good. The chips came with salsa and refried beans to dip into. We tried the jalapeño margarita in a medium size and it was excellent. I was visiting from Texas, and saw this place got good reviews. It was near our hotel, so we decided to try it out. Food was not good. I ordered empanadas with ground beef, but received shredded and the meat was put on top of empanadas instead of inside. I was too hungry to ask for a remake since the original food took awhile to come out. I asked for toppings on the side since it was a lot- cabbage, sour cream, cotija cheese, tomato sauce, lettuce. Beans served with chips were good but salsa was watery. Perhaps I'm used to a different style of Mexican food but this was just not for me. I must say that the restaurant itself was clean and nice. The service was great! We were seated immediately upon entering. Our waiter had a good sense of humor too. The booths are tall so they blocked the chilly air and even though the restaurant was busy, we didn't hear a lot of the noise. Margaritas were okay, nothing spectacular but you do get to choose between the standard 20 oz or the larger 32 oz. Tried the mocajete which had a lot of meat in it. Use your discretion eating here. The staff are friendly but the food is questionable. Am really disappointed cause this was our favorite local spot. BUT this unfortunately is not the first bad experience here. Last month we all got really sick after ordering take out here. We consistently are having items missing. And this time speaks for itself. I have had multiple people confirm that this indeed is mold on the tamale husk. We immediately returned all of our food and got our money back. Before even placing our order we knew this would be the last chance we could give eating here. Am really disappointed and grossed out. Edited to add: Received zero apology for this. Nice ambiance. Menu was across the board with many things (especially fish) dishes being far overpriced. Staff were okay and the food portions were nice. The problem was that the food everyone ordered, regardless of dish, was nothing special in any way, not a lot of flavor. The quality of the food and or its preparation seemed lacking. The meat dishes had pieces of gristle and fat which should have been trimmed off. I have said it before and I will say it again (this is my first time attending), Mexico Real puts the real in Mexico. My partner and I (we are not of the same sex) loved the chips and salsa and bean dip. The jalapeño margarita was a BOOM (see attached picture). We were in Colorado Springs on an errand and decided we needed to eat. Looking at reviews on the fly, we stopped for lunch and sat in the bar. The bartender greeted us, took our drink order and the chips and salsa arrived. The salsa was the right amount of spice with chunks of tomato and onion with fresh cilantro. The "small" margaritas are 20 oz and very good. I had a lunch combo of cheese enchilada and crispy chile relleno with beans. My husband had Chile Colorado with beans and rice and loved how tender his beef was as well as how it was seasoned. What a wonderful surprise. Oh boy. We thought that we would give this place a try (it's been a while-I actually thought it was under new management or something). We were grossed out by the food. The salsa was gross (had some taco seasoning in it maybe?). The white cheese was really good !!! But it came on a burrito that was so gross (again with gross seasoning-way too much). I couldn't eat it. My wife ordered a mixed drink and she couldn't drink it either. Luckily, they took it back and didn't charge us. The food was excellent, the service was unbelievable (especially with all those people), and the seating/restaurant was comfortable and bright.
