I was one of the first members to join Mettler when it opened . Mettler is not like any other gym you will encounter, starting with our manager Joy Sheehan.She is one of the most conscientious people I have ever met.Joy has a knack for picking great instructors.We have the best in this area.She is constantly keeping up on new trends in fitness and adds exciting new classes.We are a family at Mettler.If you miss a class everyone shows concern.We sit, have coffee ,and share our lives. During Christmas,Miranda decorates the whole gym and delicious treats are baked by the staff.They have a Membership Appreciationship party every year.We get rewarded for attending the gym with great gifts like an hour free massage.Everyone knows you on a first name basis.If you have a physical problem,you are instructed in alternative methods of performing an exercise.What's most important is you are corrected if you are incorrectly doing an exercize so you are not injured.I have not used the physical therapists but hear they are great,as well as the personal trainers, and nuritionist.The massage therapists are phenominal, my favorite being Dan Noise. On a scale of 1 to 10, the Mettler Center is off the chart.When I went through a really difficult period three years ago,I believe it saved my life.The support I got from members and instructors kept me going.If anyone believes that their gym compares with ours, they simply haven't been to the Mettler Center. Paul and Lisa Mettler are so down to earth, and they,like Joy ,are always approachable.They have chosen state of the art equipment that best helps fight osteoporosis and develope muscle tone. I simply love this gym and you will too if you become a member.Their silver sneakers program is great too , and if you qualify under your medical plan, your membership is free . I joined Mettler Center several months ago and have been pleased to participate in a number of classes taught by experienced, certified teachers: Pilates, Zumba, Full of Life, and Mindful Movement. Some of the many other classes offered for a variety of ages and experience include various styles of yoga, spinning, stretch, and strength/weight training. Knowledgeable personal trainers are available to introduce new people to an impressive array of up-to-date workout equipment and offer individual training for interested members. All instructors are encouraging, friendly, careful to assist and instruct participants about adaptations for varying conditions, correct alignment, and safety. No review of Mettler Center is complete without mentioning the excellent therapists on staff; I have been fortunate to benefit from expert treatment for a shoulder problem. Other options include various types of massage and nutrition counseling. Mettler is a welcoming place, with a lounge area offering free coffee, tables and chairs for members to read the paper, socialize with others, and friendly staff members are on hand to answer questions. In the words of Joy Sheehan, Group Exercise Coordinator and Mettler Center Manager, "It is a privilege to exercise." I would add that this statement is particularly true at Mettler Center. read more

I have been going to the Mettler Center for 15 years and have always been treated with respect and a genuine desire to help, encourage, or assist me in attaining my goals. I have used a large majority of their equipment throughout the years and have always been properly trained before attempting to use them. I have done spinning, pilates, salsa dance, some kickboxing and water aerobics. I have been lucky enough to have the use of their therapists who have gotten me through 2 different surgeries with flying colors. My husband and my youngest son have both used Mettler therapists after surgeries and I believe their healing process was much easier in the hands of the best therapists in the area. The massages are fantastic and I always feel like a new person after experiencing one of them. Joy Sheehan is the Manager and rock of Mettler. I cannot remember a time that she has not been in the building supervising, greeting, teaching a class, or solving a problem. I enjoy going to Mettler because it is not overrun with college kids and you do not have to wait to use a peice of equipment. It is cheerful and a pleasure to go to exercise because there is always someone happy to see you walk in the door. I would recommend Mettler Center to anyone and have many times throughout the years. I want to recommend the Physical Therapy Department and Dr. Jeff Schroder. I have had times in the past where I needed physical therapy and my needs were met. However, this was the first time I had physical therapy at the Mettler Center. I was pleasantly surprised with all my sessions. It became clear to me after the first session that this therapist was genuinely interested in listening to my concerns and offering suggestions that "made sense" for my lifestyle. We were able to have a conversation about my progress and ideas were exchanged that not only worked for me but gave me the encouragement to move forward. I could tell that I was improving and I was able to practice what I had learned under a watchful eye so that I would not practice the movements incorrectly. What I am trying to express is that Jeff not only met my needs but made my entire experience one of positive learning and success. In my experience, that kind of care does not happen very often. Great physical therapy but watch out for their billing department. They charged me $740 for 13 appointments because of a screw up in my insurance paper work. They were totally unhelpful and unsympathetic about it; the fact that I'll have to take out a loan to pay that large a bill mattered to no one. They make you sign something the first day, before they ever run your insurance or tell you what they charge, that says you agree to pay whatever they charge you no matter what, and they don't ask for the copay at the end of your appointment like every other doctor, instead saying they'll bill you later. Seemed shady but I was desperate to see a physical therapist to cure my headaches. Lesson learned. Didn't get the first bill until more than half my appointments were over and by the time I finally figured out what had happened (no help from them) I had already stopped going. I feel like I got scammed. Oh and the stress headaches are back, go figure. read more

I have been a long time member of Mettler both for exercising and for physical therapy. The exercise classes are excellent. I go to the "Full of LIfe" class. Joy, Ronda and Randi are excellent instructors. They are extremely considerate, being aware that members of the class are at different levels. The class is well constructed touching on the needs of the participants. Time is given to stretching, working on the core muscles, balance, flexibility, cardio etc. I have certainly obtained increased flexibility, better balance, strengthened abdominal muscles, etc. Even though I have a very busy schedule, still fully engaged in research and teaching at the U of IL as a professor of physiology (though I am retired), I always schedule the Full of LIfe Class into my weekly schedule. I have been a member of Mettler Center for 10 plus years. Over this time I have participated in group classes, taken advantage of special opportunities such as programs on balance, worked with trainers, and enjoyed Jami's massages. Mainly, I work out at Mettler on my own at least 5 times a week most weeks. I have always found staff to be helpful and kind. I enjoy being greeted by name and exchanging a few pleasantries with both staff and members each time I am there. Joy Sheehan especially has been wonderful in overseeing the functioning of the Center as well as teaching classes and caring about each individual member. I became a member of the Mettler Center in January 2003. It was recommended to me by a friend. I love it! Joy Sheehan, the Director of Fitness and Wellness, has been most accommodating to my various needs. She's always there to assist me in anything I want to do. She is always there -- even on New Year's Day! She teaches classes, runs the place and subs for instructors that are absent. I was able to see Peggy after dealing with headaches for years. She was able to find the main issue and give me exercises and stretches to do/help me with. I haven't had a headache now for over a month, and it's amazing to feel how much my posture has improved and how much less pain I have in my neck/head. read more
