I was interested in student plan $40 initiation fee, $35/mo. I visited 4/17 and dealt with the woman at the counter. I repeatedly told her that I wanted the $40/$35 student plan. She handed me a contract for a 12 month plan, which I did not want. After going in circles with her for a bit of time, she took my credit card and fiddled with her computer. Then she handed me paperwork showing completely incorrect charges. I asked her to reverse them and fix the problem. Eventually, she gave up and got her manager, Tony, involved. Tony worked on the computer for a bit and at one point, I had several pending $64 charges on my card. Then he seemed to have the problem under control and he charged my card $40 and $18.72. Since $18.72 is more than 1/2 of $35, that charge didn't make any sense for half a month. I called Tony on 4/17 and told him that I had several authorizations on my card still. I asked if we could just forget it all and cancel the membership and refund everything, including the $40 and $18.72. He said no problem, and I emailed him a copy of the credit card bill showing the current state of it. On 4/18, two charges moved from authorization to posted - $40 and $18.72. I emailed a copy of the statement to Tony and requested that he refund the charges, as we had both agreed. It's now nearly two weeks later and I still have charges on my card. I have filed complaints with BBB and Illinois Attorney General. If they don't come to their senses soon, I'll file a lawsuit in small claims court. Having all these authorizations on my card made it impossible for me to shop for groceries for three days. I wish businesses were much more careful with charges that they post to customer cards. Accidental charges aren't just frustrating to see and resolve, they can have unanticipated consequences for cardholders. Kicked to the Curb, Ghosted and Ripped Off--After being a loyal and consistent client at Kinex for…read moreover 9 years, staying through management and staff changes, staff bickering, downsizing and the COVID pandemic closure, I was notified by my trainer of more than a year and a half, that she was leaving under unclear circumstances. She told me to expect a refund of $150.00 for pre-paid, unused sessions. She informed me that there was no one there to train me any longer. When I asked for some explanation, she said that because it took her 'longer' to put together my workouts because of neck and knee injuries (the knee injury that I got while training with her) that I have, that this was 'toxic' for her. Yeah, she actually said that. And, yeah, a 'personal' trainer, whose job by definition is to customize workouts for individual clients based on their limitations and goals actually told me that the time she needed to do her job as it related to me was 'toxic' to her. Regarding the unused sessions, the refund never came. After I attempted to find out when and how I would receive the refund from the manager, he told me that he didn't know, and claimed that he had never done one before. I thought this was unlikely, given that he's the manager. He pushed me off to the owner who cannot be reached directly because all of the contact numbers on the website are out of service. Then the manager just ghosted me. So, if you're considering going to Kinex, think about how they treat long-time clients, and go elsewhere.

The Stephens YMCA is a great gym. I primarily use it for weight lifting, but they also have a tiny…read moreclimbing wall, pool, basketball courts, spin classes, and a small track. The weight room is fantastic: totally air conditioned and the air smells great. They have a ton of equipment, including dumbbells that go in 2.5lb increments for the first 50 lbs (and let's be honest, that's as high as I can go anyway). It doesn't get too busy, and it's kept very clean by the users and staff wipe downs regularly. Oh and as a bonus for students returning to Champaign for breaks from school, they have great deals for short subscriptions (like $25 for 30 days).

The app they use has hours for the pool but they aren't always correct and the pool heater breaks often. They have a "deep cleaning" every year that members pay for and they shut down the gym for 6 days to do it so not only are you paying for it but you can't go while they do it. So when I saw that CGA offered an adult gymnastics class I was so excited to get back into it! I haven't found any other gymnastics gym that offers adult classes in Champaign so I think that's really special. I was able to regain many of the skills that I had when I was a kid in a fairly short period of time. Although I had previous gymnastics experience, it's not required. Some of my classmates were brand new to gymnastics and were able to get a lot out of the class as well. If you're looking to learn a new skill or just have fun I highly recommend CGA!
