I've been training at McVicker's Academy for a year & a half now and have nothing but positive things to say. If you're considering a place to train in Champaign(or Terre Haute), stop reading & go attend a class. I doubt you'll find a similar level of instruction anywhere near where you are.
For those that need more convincing:
My Martial Arts experience consists of seven years of Tae Kwon Do, including some experience instructing TKD. I have seen my fair share of bad/incompetent studios, as well as good ones. After joining Jack's academy, I have to say that a new bar has been set.
Points I find especially great about this academy:
Atmosphere - I am continually impressed by the incredible positive atmosphere of this place. I have made many friends here, and everyone who attends is open-minded, eager to learn & eager to help you learn. There are no egos here - only those who want to train & improve their skills. As a result you could not ask for better training partners.
Quality & Mindset of Instruction - In my experience, I have found that Mindset is crucial in instruction, especially with Martial Arts. Jack teaches effective self-defense techniques, but more importantly he teaches the proper mindset - the best self-defense situation is the one you avoid. With our self-defense drills, the goal is to create an opening to escape, not to "win the fight". From a safety & a legal standpoint, escape is a far better option. When it comes to the BJJ competition game, Jack teaches high percentage moves that work with your body type to win the competition. Each & every instructor is competent & genuinely concerned about your improvement. They are friendly & happy to answer any kind of question.
Diversity of training - At McVicker's we learn Jeet Kune Do concepts, weapon handling from Kali, as well as BJJ. From stick & knife fighting to muay thai elbows & knees to grappling, the result is comprehensive martial arts training that teaches you how to defend your self standing, on the ground, armed or unarmed, in addition to preparing you for BJJ competitions with instruction from a top BJJ world champion(Jack McVicker).
Open Mat - 5 minute tournament BJJ rounds after class. These rounds are intense, and serve to reinforce the techniques learned in a realistic environment. I can't overstate the usefulness of getting this kind of practical no-holds-barred experience. It is an incredible asset for developing both your self defense & competition skills. Open mat can also be used to drill specific moves with your partner, if you want to target your weaknesses.
This has been a long review, but to sum up, I feel extremely privileged that I am able to train with a living legend like Jack. I think that McVicker's is one of the top academies in the country, let alone the Midwest area. The only thing I would like to see more of are drills that defend against firearms, but I'm really nitpicking here. Hope this review has helped you & look forward to seeing you on the mat! read more
