To get a sense of what Refinery is like, check out reviews for his apartment company: https://www.yelp.com/biz/campus-property-management-champaign-9?osq=cpm+apartments&override_cta=Request+information I called 4/16 and spoke to Bailey. I was interested in student plan $40 initiation fee, $35/mo. I visited 4/17 and dealt with the woman at the counter. I repeatedly told her that I wanted the $40/$35 student plan. She handed me a contract for a 12 month plan, which I did not want. After going in circles with her for a bit of time, she took my credit card and fiddled with her computer. Then she handed me paperwork showing completely incorrect charges. I asked her to reverse them and fix the problem. Eventually, she gave up and got her manager, Tony, involved. Tony worked on the computer for a bit and at one point, I had several pending $64 charges on my card. Then he seemed to have the problem under control and he charged my card $40 and $18.72. Since $18.72 is more than 1/2 of $35, that charge didn't make any sense for half a month. I called Tony on 4/17 and told him that I had several authorizations on my card still. I asked if we could just forget it all and cancel the membership and refund everything, including the $40 and $18.72. He said no problem, and I emailed him a copy of the credit card bill showing the current state of it. On 4/18, two charges moved from authorization to posted - $40 and $18.72. I emailed a copy of the statement to Tony and requested that he refund the charges, as we had both agreed. It's now nearly two weeks later and I still have charges on my card. I have filed complaints with BBB and Illinois Attorney General. If they don't come to their senses soon, I'll file a lawsuit in small claims court. Having all these authorizations on my card made it impossible for me to shop for groceries for three days. I wish businesses were much more careful with charges that they post to customer cards. Accidental charges aren't just frustrating to see and resolve, they can have unanticipated consequences for cardholders. For more information on management personnel and their names, check the BBB listing for Refinery. DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS GYM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE

Most negative part is the cancellation policy. My wife cancels a few days into the current month…read moreand she owes for that month (which is fine), but for the next month too? Not cool (this after cancelling all Zumba classes with little to no notice). When I handed in my form to cancel at the beginning of 2020, we were still charged for months afterwards. They eventually honored it, but only after having to get on them numerous times. Equipment selection is good, but definitely dated (Mandelbaum from Seinfeld would feel at home). The classes are not given in dedicated rooms, but instead are given upstairs in an area that is alternatively used for events like weddings. It's a little odd. They started getting cheap by not turning on the AC for the wife's zumba class (claiming the AC was broken). I hate franchised gyms like Planet Fitness, so this placed looked promising in comparison. Ultimately, it disappointed.

When I arrived the staff was friendly and helpful. Halfway through the assistant manager, Ryan, left. In my last 2 weeks, the manager, C (yes that is his name), transferred to another location. I had found him to be quick to smile and when a situation arose, he quickly handled it in a way that all parties walked away feeling like they won and the issue was resolved. Alyssa "took over" (her wording) and it was very clear that she doesn't like people and is annoyed when she is asked to do anything (like checking people in or setting people up with any of the equipment in the spa area). All the staff seemed to leave when C did as well. The showers sadly have rainfall showerheads making it hard to wash one's hair or shave legs so people only seem to use the last shower with the detachable showerhead. I like how the lockers have locks built into them. But the benches are right in front of the lockers which is good in theory but in application, means having to move one's stuff when some needs to access their locker. They have a Total Body Enhancement Machine and they have Hydromassage Beds and Loungers. I don't use the tanning equipment so not sure what the set up is there.

The cycling…read moreclass I liked and was the only one that started on time, my work schedule changes so I can't go to that one anymore. The other classes start at least 10 mins late, which I sorta got used to and stopped coming early but you never really know when they'll start. The barre class (half the reason I joined was because I love barre and it was at a good time) I had to give up on a couple months in cause every week the teacher saunters in anywhere from 10 to 25 mins late yawning and scratching her butt, doesn't have any explaination or even acknowledgment that she's very late. I asked front desk about that and they said it's cause she has to get her kids to school. Should they maybe change class start time then? The equipment here is pretty old. It's fine if you're joining to lift weights, and kinda nice for that as the gyms never crowded. I woulnt recommend if cardio's your thing, there's no stair machine and the elipticals are as good as unusable, they screech with each step.

I was a member for almost 3 years…read more 1. The price is expensive for a gym. I recall it that if you signed up for a year membership and chose auto deduct from a bank account, it was $42-$43/month. If you did month to month, it was around $51/month. A big reason why I left was the price. Yes, that price does include all the classes, which they offer a lot (Yoga, Cycling, etc...), but it still wasn't worth it. 2. The staff was really nice BUT for some odd reason, whether it is a manager's decision or not, they use ROOMBA Vacuums. Clever way to clean but when you start getting into your workout, you will be surprised at how many times that little ROOMBA keeps tapping your foot or runs into your equipment. It is very annoying, thats a petty complaint nonetheless. Ive heard rumors about the manager and I've tried to stay away from him as much as possible because he seems untrustworthy and cares more about the dollar than the people. 3. They had a lot of equipment, so whatever type of gym rat you were, beginner to expert, you could find something. However, when they first moved into the new building by the Round Barn by Mattis, they had all the machines in that first area right by the desk. It opened up for more cardio space and more space for other benches and so forth. For some reason, they decided to move all of that around and make that entire area a section called the GRID. It is supposed to be an High Intense Workout similar to a Cross Fit type. Problem is, I went to the gym a lot, 4-5 times a week and saw nobody doing the Grid (unless they worked there). You had to pay another stupid hefty fee to have a session in the Grid. A complete waste of space and could be utilized more efficiently. 4. The Locker Rooms are so small. Such a downgrade from the facility on Galen Ave. Such a dissapointment, 2 showers, 2 stalls, and literally a 7X10 sq ft room with 2 benches for changing. As Game of Thrones would say, "Shame, Shame, Shame." 5. Cancellation was easy, walked up to an associate, said I want to cancel, filled the paperwork out, and I returned my key fob. Simple, no hassle. You get what you pay for with this gym. Quality equipment and plenty of it with tons of classes and floor space to have them. But I can go to planet fitness for $10/month and get the same workout and save $300 and not deal with any of what was mentioned above.

OTF Champaign is absolutely not poorly run! I have been an OTF member for several months and my experience has been perfect! I can also attest that the gym is quite popular. If it sucked so bad the 5am, 6am, and after-work classes would not be in such high demand. OTF Champaign is popular because the workouts are awesome, the coaches and staff are great, their class times are frequent and convenient, and the facility is clean and well-managed. Starting that day there will be no more classes and no more memberships. If you want to use the facilities, you have to book with a personal trainer at $55 per month. No more Silver Sneakers for seniors. There are members who have been taking classes there forever and who have been working out there forever. Mettler claims to love them all and appreciate them and yet this change. The focus is to better serve the community but I can't understand how that is achieved by eliminating programs and memberships. Mettler was a great place to workout. The atmosphere was relaxed. Most of the people there at the time when I went were seniors like I am; some in better shape than I and some in worse. The lounge area provided opportunities to visit and meet new people. People could leave personal items, even car keys, in the lounge's open cubbyholes without concern. I'm a proponent of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," and by all appearances Mettler was not broken. Maybe it's because all the freebie Silver Sneakers were depriving Mettler of revenue. Letters with corporate jargon and platitudes offer explanations but I can't help but think it's a purely financial move. So, for Mettler Past I give 5 stars but to Mettler Future only 1.
