Having a baby is one of the most rewarding yet terrifying things you can experience in life. If you're a parent you already know how the hospital just sends you on your way after a few days in recovery with no instruction manual or help desk number. Luckily my wife did some research and convinced me to hire doulas. We had the pleasure of working with Betsy and her team of doulas who consistently perform magic to soothe and care for our baby. Simultaneously, they teach us parenting techniques, act as our therapist, and most importantly allow us to catch up on sleep. They truly provide care to the whole family. It's also a lot better than having in laws come "help". I definitely recommend Metropolitan Doulas. We had an amazing experience with Isabelle! She got us started on the right foot with our newborn and was an experienced, reassuring presence as we learned all the baby basics. We were fortunate to have Ingrid support our family when our newborn was 3 weeks to 14 weeks old. She helped make our transition to parenthood so much easier and more enjoyable than it would have been on our own. She was knowledgeable, adaptable, loving, and attentive when it came to the health and needs of our baby as well as the new parents. By the time our baby was 14 weeks old, we felt very confident that we could thrive as a new family thanks to Ingrid's support in the early weeks. For the second visit I would give 5 stars but for my first visit I would give 3. I have two more visits scheduled so I am hopeful this could be updated to 5 stars! My almost 8-week old is having a hard time sleeping at night - hello sleep deprivation! We found Metropolitan Doulas via our local U street list serve. They are super easy to work with and easy to schedule. The first woman who showed up for our overnight was more of a babysitter and didn't exactly inspire confidence for this sleepy mommy. But the second woman was great - ushered me off to bed and helped me get 5 hours in a row of sleep. She had my pump all set up for me when I awoke and gave great tips on how to replicate longer sleep stretches on my own. read more

I don't know how to properly convey how incredible this experience has been for us, but I'll try. We used Metropolitan Doulas for night support during the first 6 weeks of our baby's life. Our primary doula for those 6 weeks was Jade - who is outstanding - and we also worked with Jennie while Jade was away, and could not have been happier with both of them. We spoke with several agencies in the DC area, but Metropolitan Doulas was clearly top of the heap. Fast responses, wonderful doulas, and a clear and comprehensive contract. It made selecting them easy. Jade was amazing. She didn't just care for our baby overnight, she was a true thought partner, like a third parent who actually knows what's she's doing. She gave us so much peace of mind. She advised on everything - feeding, schedules, gas, diaper rash - and even taught our daughter gentle independent sleep skills that have set her up for success as she gets older and can stretch out her night sleep. I can't tell you how many times my husband and I said "don't worry, Jade will be here tonight" or "we'll ask Jade, she'll know." Jennie, likewise, gave us such peace of mind. She was there in the haze of our first week home from the hospital and helped to hold our heads above water. On the first night she got our baby sleeping in her bassinet, and had such helpful recommendations as we got set up as a new household. Jade and Jennie didn't just give us much needed sleep so we could be the best parents we could be, they gave us peace of mind and held off the overwhelm. If you're thinking about using Metropolitan Doulas, especially Jade and Jennie, definitely definitely do it. Nikki and her team are hands-down exceptional! I am so happy that we found Metropolitan Doulas while looking for postpartum support. When I had my baby during the summer of 2020 at the height of the pandemic with a toddler at home, I knew we would need extra support. I emailed Metropolitan Doulas and was busy juggling all the craziness of life and couldn't get back to Shaquanda when she called me. I was so glad she didn't give up on me and she followed up every couple of days. Once we finally connected, we asked a million questions and were overall impressed with her answers and the company's approach to not just postpartum support, but also with safety precautions with COVID. We were focused on lactation support and light household support such as help with the kitchen, laundry and light meal prep. On the admin side of things, Metropolitan Doulas were very supportive when we said we wanted to switch gears from the first doula we worked with and had to tweak the hours of a package we had purchased. Luckily, we got to work mostly with Nikki. Nikki is amazing. We got along right away, and not only did she provide the hands-on help we needed, but she also played a big role in helping with my postpartum anxiety with her gentle encouragement and lactation expertise. She was very transparent about her activities and safety precautions during the pandemic so I was ensured that she was safe to have over in the house, and she always wore a mask. She gave me all kinds of insight to helpful sleep tips for both the baby and toddler (she's also a professional sleep consultant/specialist!), feeding tips for both baby and toddler, and pumping and nursing tips for me. I trusted her completely with my baby and in the house, and she was excellent at time management. I would give her a list of things to do for the day, and she'd get through them all, while doing additional things around the house too that I didn't even realize needed to get done. Nikki's also a professional organizer, and she tackled piles of messes that have been sitting around for months!! She even single-handedly helped to change the layout of our guest room to make a telework space for me while also watching the baby. She also helped get both the nursery and my toddler's room organized and in shape which was causing me a lot of stress. Any parent knows how much work it is keeping on top of transitioning the kids clothes, shoes and toys as they grow, and she came up with storage solutions and systems that made the transitions easy. When Nikki traveled during the holidays, she connected me with another doula, Lacy, to cover for the couple of weeks she was gone, who I really liked too. Lacy was wonderful at helping to cook up huge batches of purees for my baby and also helped with my older daughter. She even came over 1 day to help transfer my plants, one of my hobbies that gives me a lot of joy that I was sure I wouldn't have time to do until my baby was at least 1 year old. Overall, these ladies are fabulous and their company and friendship was amazing during those foggy first couple of months. The postpartum journey is a sacred time and I appreciated Nikki being there for me and her flexibility along the way to what my family needed. I looked forward to both Nikki and Lacy's visits so much. I highly recommend reaching out to Nikki and her team for any support you may need whether you're a new parent or have a couple of kiddos already. We've had a great experience so far with Kate as a daytime postpartum doula and Fatou as our nighttime postpartum doula. Kate was willing to hop in and do any task asked of her, baby related or not. She cooked, helped change sheets, coaching breastfeeding, etc. She was incredibly easy to work with and made sure I was taking care of myself in addition to the baby. Fatou has been a sleep godsend at night. She's kept our baby on his schedule and ensured that we're getting as much sleep as possible with a newborn. They provided a wonderful night post partum doula Carolina on very short notice who helped us get some sleep and get our baby onto a more routine sleep schedule. Our day postpartum doula Whit is a saint. One of the most kind, caring, charismatic and thoughtful people I've ever met. She was constantly interacting with our baby- reading to her, talking to her, playing, going on walks, and helping her reach milestones. It was amazing to have a highly knowledgeable and experienced baby expert on hand to pepper with millions of questions about newborn care. She knows so much! She beautifully reorganized the nursery drawers (twice, after she grew out of two sizes), and even labeled the pics for us. The best part was that she made an effort to care for me and not just the baby, making sure I had water, washing my breast pump parts, doing dishes, and even baking lactation cookies. We hired Ayesha to assist us after the birth of our third baby. It was a particularly traumatic birth, and I was very weak and having trouble nursing. Ayesha was a terrific help. She jumped in immediately doing whatever needed to be done - picking up around the house, feeding snacks to the older children and managing their needs, tending to the newborn so that I could get some rest. She also helped me through my difficulty nursing, and came up with novel ways to organize my time and space to ensure that I was well-equipped while on my own. She is an absolute professional, and was a pleasure to have around the house even during a rough time. I cannot recommend her highly enough. read more

My husband and I were first introduced to Metropolitan Doulas when we attended their free postpartum prep session. That helped us connect and think deliberately about how to prepare for bringing baby home. We also utilized them for in-home newborn care and CPR classes. It was so easy and convenient to find a time for them to meet us and another couple during a very busy time. Best of all, we were able to have Nikki as our postpartum doula. We weren't sure whether we needed a day or night doula--or even how much time we might need. They helped us prep for a certain number of hours and then coordinate once we were in the thick of things. Nikki then helped us find our way out of the fog. The support we received touched on everything for prepping meals to emotional and lactation support. We learned about ways to care for our babe and felt like better parents because of it. I even needed a doula to come over and help me organize and build nursery furniture. We received help from Laura Durbin, Giny, and Royan, who have contributed their unique skills and knowledge in caring for me and my baby. We were so relieved that all our doulas were fully vaccinated and wore masks (even double masks) at our home. Thanks very much to the agency for accommodating our requests and needs! She is an extremely hardworking, caring, reliable, and amazing doula who always goes above and beyond. Laura mainly did night shifts at my home, giving us a much needed break every time she was here. She always arrived promptly and carried out her work diligently. When I woke up in the morning, the baby was fed and asleep, the dishes and bottles were clean, the laundry was neatly folded and put away, the trash was thrown out, and my breakfast was ready on the kitchen island. Laura paid great attention to detail and always sent us a thorough recap regarding what my son did at night. Every morning we felt so refreshed after receiving her five star service! Besides the good work she did, Laura provided me with tremendous support when I had a rocky start with breastfeeding. She solicited help and advice from other doulas and Lactation Consultants to help me develop an effective plan. Thanks to her alternative medicine training in Asia, she conducted guasha, a Chinese massage therapy, to unclog my milk duct several times. She gave me referrals to specialists and provided me with great emotional support. She is a wonderful listener and her reassurance helped me regain confidence in caring for my son. I can go on and on about how awesome Laura is. We greatly appreciate her diligence, drive, transparency, trustworthiness, and flexibility. Working with Metropolitan doulas was so amazing - I was able to call, talk to a doula (Sandra) and have her start almost immediately. (A co-owner even called to make sure we had everything we needed and all qs answered prior to starting!) We had Sandra come 4nights a week for our daughter's week 2-6 and it was the best thing we could've done as new parents struggling to adjust to a newborn's sleep schedule. Sandra is such a calming presence and u can tell how much experience she has caring for babies. She's given us so much help and a wealth of advice for so many issues that could come up. We relied on Metropolitan Doulas for both of our children. We are currently working with Anike for my three month-old. She is absolutely fantastic. She's kind, super skilled with the baby, extremely professional, and helpful with all sorts of things around the house. I feel like she genuinely cares about not only the baby, but our whole family. My four year-old loves her, too, and keeps asking when they can play again. We extended our contract twice and have added another day per week because she's been so wonderful. Had SUCH a great experience working with Met Doulas from September - December 2018. I arranged for a PPD to come several times a week for my new son's first few months of life knowing that it would help with my recovery, and our family to adjust smoothly to what can be a jarring transition. Demi and Cindy were amazing as daytime PPDs for everything from infant safety (baby wearing, feeding, sanitation, etc), lactation (I had ALL the questions), and really helping with whatever I needed...baby care (feeding, bathing, mani/pedi), helping with laundry, dishes, and taking care of the pets. Missy and Nikki were awesome as night doulas. It was literally like having Mary Poppins here overnight, and it enabled my husband and I to get a solid 8-9 hours of sleep. They took care of the bebe, helped to kick-start good sleeping habits, cleaned/did laundry, and walked the pup. I credit our smooth transition from a family of two to three because we had Met Doulas on hand. Metropolitan Doulas were amazing to work with and schedule. i ended up using their night services after the birth of my second child. I had worked with Nikki during the day after the birth of my first baby and I knew that I would use their services again. I talked to the two doulas before the birth who would be primarily helping me at night to see if we would be compatible. They immediately put me in ease about having a stranger stay at my house with my newborn. They helped me recover from my second c-section and I do believe that my recovery was so much better because I had their help. They helped me work with nursing along with pumping. Along with watching our baby, they helped out with the laundry and washing all the pump parts and bottles throughout the night. They were so amazing, that when I ended up back in the hospital due to complications, my mom reached out to to the company to get more help and they managed to organize help for her immediately. So grateful we found Olivia through Metropolitan Doulas! She came to help us 3 afternoons a week for 6 weeks starting as soon as we got home from the hospital. Ms. Sandra coming two nights a week for the first six weeks was the best gift I've ever gotten myself. I booked super early because I was worried how I would survive having a baby and two special needs toddlers and not getting any sleep. I was able to pay over 8 months which made it feasible financially, and it wasn't as much as I thought and getting sleep is priceless in the newborn phase. I spoke with Ms Sandra several times over the course of my pregnancy and she was a super calming presence. We settled on Sunday and Thursday nights and I looked to those nights at my oasis. My six week old son also is now only waking up once or twice a night because of the routine Ms Sandra established. She's a wealth of knowledge and experience - she is why I asked about getting my son on vitamin d (there had been a little miscommunication/ I had missed that note after coming home from the hospital, she helped reassure me about and care for both my son's circumcision and belly button healing, every night she comes I learn something new and important. The peace and reassurance having her in my family's life is priceless. Having two nights of decent sleep a week also significantly improved my post partum anxiety. I cannot recommend Ms Sandra enough. We've actually asked her to come an additional night a week for the next six weeks as well because I'm not ready to be without her yet. read more

I had a wonderful experience working with Metropolitan Doulas. Having to also care for a toddler, we knew we needed help overnight with a newborn. Based on due date, we were matched up with Geily. She was extremely supportive and non-judgmental and was able to anticipate my needs before me asking. Even though I still had to wake up to nurse, Geily helped change the baby's diaper, burp and settle her back down. I actually felt pretty well rested in the morning! Being a first time mom can be quite daunting. Being a first time mom in a pandemic,without family and friends around is definitely challenging.  I was introduced to Ayesha Chatterjee in my third trimester. After speaking to her on the phone,  I knew she was the right doula for me. My pregnancy journey had been pretty difficult and she took her time to listen to me, understand my needs and address my concerns. Initially I had only planned on booking Ayesha for a few weeks but I ended up having her for four months.  Ayesha was an integral part of my fourth trimester and I can honestly say if it wasn't for her, I am not sure how I would have made it this far. Having had a c section, my post partum journey was tough. My first day home I felt anxious and very  overwhelmed. Her precense was instantly calming. She is very knowledgeable- from  newborn care, breastfeeding to just simply understanding the needs of a new mom. I probably would have given up on breastfeeding if it wasn't for her. She has a wonderful manner and is very meticulous with everything. One thing I will always be grateful to Ayesha for is that she was also able to spot I was displaying signs of pre eclampsia. She encouraged me to go the hospital. In my doctor's words, she saved my life. Whilst I was admitted in hospital, she helped my husband take care of my baby. I will never forget the relief I felt in that moment, knowing my daughter was in her care I have learnt many things from Ayesha. The most important being to trust myself and have confidence in my decision making as a mom.  Although Ayesha was only briefly part of my journey, she certainly left a lasting impression. Metropolitan Doulas were a lifesaver for me, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Betsy and Ayesha were a tremendous help as daytime doulas when my third baby arrived. I knew that he was safe and soothed in their arms for a few hours each day so that I could rest or take care of a few items on my to do list or spend time with my older kids. And they were so proactively supportive of me in my recovery journey. When the sleep deprivation started to take its toll, they found a colleague, Royan, who helped overnight a few times just so that I could get a solid 5 hours of sleep here and there to keep powering through the newborn phase. And a couple of months later, when I found myself in a pinch, their colleague Kristen swooped in to take such wonderful care of my baby and me. I'm dealing with a nagging injury that makes some basic childcare tasks very hard for me, and Kristen was such a huge help as she played with my baby, fed him, took him up and downstairs around nap times. And she was so kind, and supportive of me as I navigated my recovery. I am so grateful to this company and their amazing doulas! read more

Amazing team of Doulas! No words can express the true gratitude and appreciation I have for the Night Doula and Day Doulas we worked with during the fourth trimester period for our first baby. As a first time mom, our Night Doula (Joya), was the best thing that could have happened to us. She showed us the way to be good parents. She is very knowledgeable about infant care, infant sleeping/soothing methods, and also monitoring the mom for post partum issues. I truly appreciate that she respected our lead with what we wanted to do with regard to the baby, breast feeding, etc. but provided us with options and knowledge to be able to carry out our parenting method. I don't know how we would have survived the first three months without Joya. She will always have a special place in our hearts. We also worked with numerous Day Doulas throughout the first 3-4 months - Katie, Megan, Becca, and Lisa. We had a great experience with each one. They were all so good with the baby, helped me rest so I could recover, and took care of baby stuff. Pump parts and bottles were washed, baby clothes and burp cloths were clean and organized, etc. But most importantly, they were experienced in working with newborn babies and I could rest assured that my baby was in good, safe hands. I don't know what we would have done without the Doulas we worked with from this agency. Also, logistically, very easy to book followup/additional time to meet your needs as you figure out what you need and works for your family. The assistants and/or Nikki are very responsive to emails and timely in setting up schedules. read more

My wife and I needed some extra help taking care of our newborn when I went back to work and on days when my parents were unable to help out. We had never heard of postpartum doulas before, but we're so happy that we found out about Metropolitan Doulas! Based on schedules and availability, we worked with Erin for the first few days and Becca for several more. Both were excellent, and had good advice and ideas from things like breastfeeding, interpreting cues, getting the baby to sleep, etc. They also took a lot of the burden off of us by holding the baby, helping to clean, wash and organize, etc. They were also both very genuine about their interest in helping us and taking care of our son, which helped us to relax a bit. It was very reasonably priced for the quality of help we received. We'd definitely recommend this service to parents who need some help managing all the responsibilities of being a new parent or want to learn from someone with more knowledge and experience. read more

I remember when I first called you I had no clue what kind of help we would need-I just knew that we would certainly need it when our Noah arrived. I am happy to say that you made the perfect doula match for our family! From our first meeting, Holly made both my husband and I feel comfortable and confident that we were in experienced hands. Noah arrived two weeks earlier than our scheduled c-section, and Holly was there for us the moment I told her I was in labor. She even offered to help us pick up anything for our early bird that we would need when we came home from the hospital. After an emotional/painful four days recovering at the hospital, it was a relief to have Holly join us in our first two evenings home. Holly not only helped Noah acclimate, but was there for me as I healed from surgery/delivery. She was so comfortable with all of the chaos in the house-family members visiting, a dog and cat that demanded cuddles, and making my Husband feel like he could ask questions too. I always felt like I could be myself-and I was often a sweaty, in desperate need of a shower, partially clothed new mom (lol). We had amazing late night conversations during feedings, and Holly supported my decision to exclusively breastfeed in every way she could. I so appreciate all the baby wisdom she shared with me. I think working with Holly has truly has helped me become a better and more confident Mommy. My only regret is that we didn't get to work together longer, but I am so thankful that we were able to welcome our baby boy home with Holly there to watch over and guide us. Thank you again! Firstly, I'm so glad I decided to get a postpartum doula in the first place. It was such a lifesaver to have support with limited family in the area. My experience with Metropolitan Doulas was fantastic. They matched us with an amazing doula, Nathalie, who could really relate to our experience, and was super knowledgeable. We would like to recommend China who was our overnight post-partum doula. She has the sweetest demeanor and we knew her calming energy would be much appreciated as soon as we brought home our first baby from the hospital. As first time parents, we had a lot of questions and probably overly precautious requests and she always accommodated us. Having someone else take care of your baby isn't an easy decision but China not only helped take care of our baby boy but helped him thrive from the night we brought him home from the hospital. This was my second time around working with Metropolitan Doulas, and it was definitely worthwhile. It is pricey, but you get what you pay for! Joya was fantastic - she is super knowledgeable about all things newborn and is also a lactation counselor (she saved me when I had a near-bout with mastitis!) She truly cares about her clients, and she knows that being an overnight doula is more than just helping out with our baby overnight, as new moms need help too! Simple things like making sure I had a snack when I woke up to pump and fresh pump parts ready to go in the morning meant so much to me. I was super nervous about having outsiders in our house because of COVID-19, and I appreciated all of the extra precautions she took to make sure we felt comfortable. Metropolitan Doulas was a life saver after we had our first child in February 2021. After facing a number of birth complications, and quickly realizing how unprepared we were, their doulas helped us survive the most challenging time of our lives. Laura Durbin in particular was a fantastic doula. She was knowledgeable and eager to learn about our child, and she helped us address some of the challenges we were facing with feeding and sleeping. We always felt extremely comfortable with Laura in our home and we knew our baby was in good hands in Laura's care overnight. Laura is kind and warm and has a natural talent with babies. Nikki assisted us the week after our first baby was born - it was an excellent experience. She came to our home the day after we got back from the hospital, helped set up our nursery and kitchen for baby, and got us on a feeding/pumping schedule to boost my supply and help our baby gain weight. She was a calming presence at a confusing time, and we would recommend her services for new parents trying to get their bearings.
