SSD has TENS units for clients and I got to use one for this birth (no idea if it helped but so glad to try it out!). The community classes are informative. I went into labor at 2:30 in the morning and Rose joined us shortly afterwards. She knows what signs mean your labor is progressing and what might be helpful in reducing pain and when you need to leave for the hospital, and she knows how to let your body lead the labor. At the hospital, Rose advocated for us to make sure we had the care we needed (e.g.: the hospital was understaffed and we were left alone and I was in no state to ask where on earth our medical team was when I was pushing). Pretty sure I'm done after kid #2 but if we do have any more we will definitely be asking SSD to join us again.

As a first time mom, it was wonderful to have their expertise and level-headed approach to pregnancy and childbirth throughout the journey - and lord knows I had a million and one questions. They are both knowledgeable, kind, and genuinely lovely people to know and work with. Rose was the doula in attendance at my birth and her presence was so calming and appreciated. She came to our house during early labor when I was unsure of how the process was going. And from the house to the hospital, she was with us every step of the way. In the hospital, she had lots of supplies with her to support my L&D, including a much used hot water bottle that made those first few hours more bearable. And when the doctors said my son was "sunny side up," Rose helped moved me into different positions and did adjustments to help encourage baby to change position (which he did!!). She held my hand (and my leg ) during 3 hours of pushing and reminded me often to breathe, made sure I was drinking water, and reminded me to relax when possible. Truly, I could not have done it without her. It was amazing to have someone looking out for me in the L&D room. As as added bonus, she took photos when our son was born which are really special to have. Although I think I'm a "one and done" type person with my son, if I were to have another child, I would engage Jenny and Rose again for their services in a heartbeat!

Especially in those last 1-2 months, we leaned so heavily on the birth doulas and they responded to all of our questions and concerns immediately. We learned the most about how to care for our daughter and what was happening in my body from DCBD. I went into labor and the birth experience feeling ready and excited, and that's because of the experience, information, and kindness that were shared with us ahead of time. The birth - nearly 4 months later, and we are still talking about Camille! We are going to remember her forever - she was such a wonderful presence during my entire labor and after, and we don't know what we would have done without her. She made sure my husband and I knew what was happening, she advocated for us, she ensured I was comfortable (well, as comfortable as you can be in labor), and she really rooted for us the whole time. I felt safe because she was with us. And Ella - we were shocked that someone who didn't *have* to be there, stayed for the entire labor, participated, and stayed after when we were transferred to the postpartum room! She will be (or already is) a phenomenal birth doula. We felt so lucky to have Camille and Ella. Post birth - Lolonyo came to our house the very first night we were back from the hospital, and what a gift she is. She taught us how to soothe a baby, how to change a diaper (I'm sure they showed us in the hospital... but I could not remember haha). We had her for several nights during those first 2 months and we were so, so grateful to wake up the next morning refreshed, rested, and with the knowledge that our daughter had been held in loving arms all night long. She was never judgmental and was always supportive as we navigated breastfeeding, safe cosleeping, and everything else. We also had Joanna for several daytime visits. She always made sure to check in on my mental and physical health, which was so appreciated, and she was so helpful. We always felt like we were able to reset a bit after her visits, because she'd leave behind clean bottles and pump parts and a rested (and sometimes still sleeping) baby, and we would have had time to ourselves to shower and get a little more organized. She made our chaotic lives feel lighter, and we loved her for that. As a DCBD member you'll also have the opportunity to be part of a postpartum circle of other parents going through what you did. Shaleen and Elizabeth gave us space to talk through birth and everything that comes after, while feeling supported and safe. I'm still friends with some of the parents from my circle. She provided excellent support and kept me grounded during the entire process and immediately stepped in and started providing all the tips and tricks in her wheelhouse to help me cope during my fast and intense epidural-free birth. Mairi and Emily come with such a wealth and depth of knowledge with years of experience that you can't help but feel safe and watched over under their care. They are well organized with a plan for every possible situation and the community groups that they place you in with other mom's delivering around the same time as you are invaluable to the process. This was my first child, and I will absolutely use their midwifery services again for any children that may come in the future. I highly recommend them for home births and any woman's care. That way you end up inadvertently meeting the different doulas. We went with Cara. She has a ton of experience and super chill vibe. Our hospital was not allowing extra visitors due to COVID so we signed up for a virtual doula service. She met with us a few times before the birth to review questions, birth plan, and provide support. She was also available via email for random questions that came up in between. The day of my labor I reached out to her as needed and she guided me through some of the decisions we had to make. Her support made it so that I could better advocate for myself and my baby during my labor. She was 100% supportive of all my decisions and in the end I ended up having a beautiful and quick birth. I am so happy we got a doula and recommend it to anyone no matter what type of brith you are planning on having. I found the groups to be more helpful towards the beginning of my pregnancy, especially as it was a time that COVID was just ramping up. The only issue is that the people in group vary from week to week. I think it would be nice to be able to connect with the same group from week to week so there is some continuity.

I had the home birth experience of my dreams thanks to Katrina at Pathways Midwifery! I highly…read morerecommend her to anyone considering a home birth. She is impressively knowledgeable, experienced, professional, kind, patient, and just generally amazing. She attended the birth of my first child in May 2020 and I absolutely plan to call her up for all future pregnancies! For context, I had originally planned to give birth in a birth center because I wanted a natural birth but with it being my first pregnancy, I thought a home birth would be a little too overwhelming. Well, enter COVID in my third trimester...and I started to explore the possibility of a switch to home birth. I scheduled a phone call with Katrina just to explore the idea of switching to her care and home birth at 32 weeks. She was so very patient and answered all my questions about prenatal care, the logistics of home birth, emergency preparation, etc while putting ZERO pressure on me to make the switch. I could tell she genuinely wanted me to have the best birth experience for ME, regardless of whether it was with her or in a birth center. I left the conversation SUPER impressed with her knowledge and experience and with the prospect of home birth. After taking a few days to think it over, we made the switch at about 33 weeks. All the prenatal visits took place at home, which was SUPER cool, especially in COVID times when its such a pain to go to a medical facility. Katrina took above-and-beyond COVID precautions, always wearing a mask, washing her hands several times during each visit, and even changing clothes between clients. She even did all the standard blood and urine work from home, taking samples during home visits and sending them in...super convenient. The thing I most liked about Katrina's care was that she always laid out my options, giving me evidence-based background information, then let ME make decisions about MY care and MY birth. I never felt any pressure from her to do anything a certain way. She always respected my opinions and preferences and let me decide. You will be hard-pressed to find care like this in a hospital or even a birth center...and now that I've experienced it, I refuse to settle for anything less! In short, I had a very smooth, fast! (2 hours...), and beautiful home birth. I'm convinced it went so well in large part because I was so relaxed and confident in Katrina's care leading up to the birth. I knew that whatever happened, Katrina was prepared with the knowledge, equipment, and and experience to handle it, including the awareness and readiness to transfer to the hospital if it were to become necessary. Everything about the birth was better than I could have ever imagined. Katrina and her team gave us such a personalized experience, and they even left the house cleaner than when they arrived (a small thing to be sure, but it was so helpful!). I had my first two babies at GWUH (with epidurals!) and was planning the same for my third... until…read moreplans changed at 38+ weeks. (Thanks, omicron variant!) We were so incredibly lucky to get connected to Katrina. She worked with us to evaluate if we were good candidates for home birth and then helped us transition to a home birth plan... on a VERY tight timeline. She came to my house for a prenatal visit and I swear that one appointment seemed like more actual medical care than I received in the rest of my pregnancies put together. Having someone actually focused just on you and your baby - with plenty of time to get to know you and no other distractions or pressures - is an amazing experience. I wish I'd switched a lot earlier. The birth itself was... let's say full of surprises (: I don't want to go into too much detail, but I do want to say that I am deeply, profoundly grateful that Katrina was there, and will be for the rest of my life, and so will my baby when she's old enough to know the story. Katrina's calm expertise and focus supported our entire family. Having the postpartum visits at home was also wonderful, vs. having to cart myself and baby around town while still recovering from birth. Even though we ended up at the hospital after the birth (probably unnecessary in hindsight!) I'm so glad I got to give birth at home. It's definitely better; I can't imagine ever planning a hospital birth again. Thank you.
