I am a repeat client of Amy's and I cannot tell you enough of how valuable she is to have in your back pocket. As a second time mom, I didn't think I would need as much help this time around with Amy. I had a baby less than two weeks ago, and I can already say that the most important decision I've made postpartum is hiring Amy. I found her through a friend who had an amazing experience, and I reached out in a panic on a Sunday when my milk came in and I had no idea what to do. Her insanely fast response time was much needed; I found out the next day that our son had lost more than 10% of his birth weight and to say that I was freaking out is an understatement. I was referred to Amy by my pediatrician when my then-5 week old was having latching problems that required immediate attention. I had visited a hospital lactation consultant already, and was still having problems (and couldn't get in for a follow up.) Amy was able to come to my apartment that very day to evaluate and correct my son's latch. The correction made a difference immediately, and Amy was incredibly responsive a couple of days later when we had some problems again. My newborn latched on great at the hospital and I thought I was lucky to not have any issues with breastfeeding. One week later I found myself frustrated, crying, and in pain. I did not think I would make it one more day trying to breastfeed. I was about to give up as my daughter cried constantly, would not sustain a latch, and would not want to nurse. After seeing two lactation consultants in the hospital, my son and I were still having difficulty breastfeeding when we arrived home. I was in pain and he was frustrated. We hired Amy to help get myself and my son acclimated and on track to breast feed, after an 8 day hospital adventure that included some NICU time---where they fed him formula. I contacted Amy after having delays in being able to breastfeed at the hospital after my daughter was born. My daughter was fed formula at the hospital, and afterwards would get very frustrated at breastfeeding. We could just never quite seem to make it work for us. Amy was incredibly helpful in giving me tips on how to get her to latch, how to ease her frustration, and how to position her so that it was less stressful on my shoulders and back. After she left I felt like we could actually do this! After trying on my own with my daughter and encountering more bouts of screaming frustration from my daughter (user error!) We went into the birth of our son thinking it's baby number two and we breastfed our first so how different can it be? Well, we were wrong. Our baby girl started losing weight rapidly upon our return home from the hospital. By the time she had reached 10% weight loss, we had seen multiple LCs, all of whom gave us contradictory advice. We were willing to try just about anything, but were incredibly frustrated by the lack of clarity, especially because none of the recommendations were working. As first time parents, we were extremely overwhelmed and frustrated and needed someone to just tell us what the right way was and give us a plan. Amy was extremely pragmatic. My pediatrician suggested we reach out to a lactation consultant after my daughter wasn't gaining any weight after being discharged from the hospital. After a very sleepless night and a very unhappy baby, I reached out to Amy( per recommendation from a friend) she was able to come out the day I called and it was lifesaving. The best thing about Amy? She's RESPONSIVE! And super positive. Being able to call/email/text her and get a response soon after was a huge comfort to me and my husband. Here's our story: After bringing our son home from the hospital, we ended up being THOSE parents who took him to the ER on his first night home with us because he wasn't producing wet diapers. Come to find out, my milk hadn't yet come in and the poor little guy was starving! The next day we saw our pediatrician's lactation consultant, who told me how damaged my nipples were, how I was at risk of developing mastitis, and how I should start pumping every 2 hours to establish my supply. Needless to say, we came home from the doctor completely frazzled, so I reached out to Amy on a whim after a frantic Yelp search. By the end of the day, Amy had dropped off a hospital grade pump at my house (so crucial as time was of the essence!). Two days later she came to my house for a consultation and she kept things SO positive, which was hugely important as I was barely hanging on by a thread on that point. She showed me how to slightly modify his latch and allowed us to rent a baby scale so we could see how much milk he was "transferring" at each feeding. We ended up also seeing Dr. Karen Bodnar (Inova Breastfeeding Medicine) who gave us some additional tips and a diagnosis of vasospasm, but I credit Amy with being there for us from the very beginning. It was also so useful to have the baby scale once our son started really nursing. We could see that he went from only transferring .5 oz per feeding in the early days to over 3 oz per feeding! As a new mom I had a lot of trouble with breastfeeding early on. My milk took awhile to come in so we had to supplement with formula. Amy came to the rescue. Two weeks after my daughter was born we were still struggling with the proper latch and I was in extreme pain every time I fed her. She was gaining weight beautifully but I was completely miserable, frustrated and ready to give up. Amy recommended I pump after I nurse to help increase my supply, in case that was the issue. Since then, my supply has significantly increased, and my newborn will now nurse for 25-35 minutes, as opposed to 10-15. On top of her helpfulness, Amy in no way pressures you to do anything. She listens to what YOU want, while at the same time, thinking about what's best for baby. She understood that the most important thing for my baby was for her to return to a healthy weight and if it came down to it, supplementing would have to be a last resort option. I never felt any pressure from her, as some of my friends have experienced with some more extreme lactation consultants. I have since been back to the doctor with my girl and she has managed to gain back the whole pound she lost in just one week. At our 3 day old check-up, our pediatrician recommended we talk to Amy because our daughter had lost close to 10% of her birth weight. I had also been experiencing extreme discomfort while breastfeeding but everyone at the hospital said she was latching properly. We had only gotten less than 3 hours of sleep the past 2 nights b/c our daughter's feeding schedule was around the clock and unsustainable so we were in a bad place and needed help.
