Amtrak/VRE/Metro - King Street Station, Old Town Alexandria VA…read more At the start of a weekend trip from Alexandria to Newport News, I was booked on one of Amtrak's Northeast Regional trains. I've lived in Alexandria for about 15 years and appreciate the reach of trains stopping in Old Town. The transit footprint includes the Blue and Yellow Metro rail lines, the VRE commuter rail, and both CSX freight and Amtrak passenger trains - making the station exceptionally versatile. The Amtrak station opens at 6 a.m. - and there's an excellent 24-hour diner a block away, near the Hilton serving Old Town King Street. One of the not-so-great features of the Amtrak side of the station is that passengers heading into D.C. may have to cross over the tracks or face a lot of steps up and down to get from one set of tracks to the other. Complicating the process is the practice of withholding information about which track incoming trains might be using, so we won't know what side of the tracks we will be boarding from. That's all going to change: the site is undergoing major construction changes that will eliminate having to cross the rails on foot. While the construction will likely take most of the year to finish, the result should be amazing. We saw a similar investment in the site two years ago when the WMATA/DASH side of the station was overhauled, greatly improving safety for all who use the station. According to the station's website, the contractor must achieve substantial completion within 756 consecutive calendar days from the Notice-To-Proceed (NTP), issued December 2025 (so figure it'll be under construction until early 2028). This is a station of historic standing, within a stone's throw from the Washington Masonic Temple monument. Once the dust clears, passenger safety will see a significant improvement, as will train traffic.

To save on Uber/Lyft fees, I took the metro from DCA to this station, then took a bus to National Harbor. The bus area is right outside the metro station and fairly easy to navigate. This station is also in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. I was able to walk around and see a little of it, but if you have more time, you can take the free trolley around Old Town- it also stops here. There really isn't much you can walk to unless you have a good amount of time before your bus arrives, so my suggestion is to stay put and not try to find coffee, food, or drinks. I wish there was a convenience store or coffee shop closer!

Fortunately, utilizing the bus system both leaving from the Takoma Langley Crossroads Transit Center and coming back to this transit center was very easy and affordable. Luckily, the bus drivers I had on both buses were cordial and arrived within reasonable timeframes even with the timeframes I chose being on Christmas Eve.

When I was there the other night probably 1/2 the lights were burned out. It is not easy to determine who to contact about this. Because it is outdoors it is very dark at night and potentially dangerous. Also there should be a master list of all the buses that stop there, which bay each one stops at, and the time until the next bus rather than listing them at each bay individually. This should be displayed electronically, Passengers should not have to go to each bay to determine which bus stops where. It is time consuming and inconvenient. There are also many rats at this station, which are particularly active at night. So altogether not the greatest experience transferring there. There are lots of hispanic shops and restaurants in the area though.

The drivers are usually friendly- there is one who is slightly cranky- and I've never had an issue getting a seat on the bus. Also, the bus is always clean. According to their website, a bus comes around 10 minutes on average, although I've definitely waited longer, especially late at night. I do wish the hours were a bit longer, and that it ran on Sunday. I also wish that you could track it's location online- a few times, I've slowly meandered around my apartment getting ready, only to leave my apartment and have the Circulator just leaving my stop. Being able to anticipate when it will arrive would save a lot of time. I also wish they would expand the route, including to the Medical Center Metro. But overall, it's a great service and very convenient!

I always research trips and I thought I was informed about my travels. The wmata web site was wrong. On Saturday, Twinbrook was the stop I used when the red line was impacted by single tracking and repairs. On Sunday, I started my trip at Twinbrook since that stop was the solution the day before. The glitches switched locations. I learned that Twinbrook wasn't in service (after swiping my card). A nice customer told me about the changes. I left the platform and asked the station employee for help. He was probably having to repeat himself dozens of times during his shift. But I am one customer, hearing the information for the first time. He was frowning, unpleasant and gave confusing instructions. He was also pointing to the wrong exit. When I asked him to clarify where I needed to go, he was rushing me out of the area, telling me to get on a shuttle that would take me downtown. Where? I am fluent in sarcasm but I would not be disrespectful to a customer. Metro employees should be awesome whether I am paying full fare or $2.00. A nice bus driver told me to walk to the other side of the block. She was kind. I walked back into the station. Another Twinbrook metro employee walked me to the area when I explained that his colleague was needing a time out. I had already traveled two hours by car and was wheeling luggage around. Even when I am tired, I am nice. I took the shuttle to Medical Center from Twinbrook. Two opposite experiences in the same day. The employee at Twinbrook needs retraining. The employee at Medical Center needs a raise and a promotion. Kindness matters.

I hopped on expecting a chill, leisurely cruise like some other cities' subways, but nope this thing hauled ass right out of the gate. It accelerated like it was late for a very important date, screeching around corners, jerking side to side like a caffeinated New York train on steroids. The cars were swaying wildly, I was gripping the pole for dear life, laughing out loud thinking, "Subway gone wild! This is a thrill ride disguised as public transit!" It was hilarious and exhilarating definitely not your grandma's slow commuter train. (They've probably smoothed things out a bit with more automation these days, but that memory still cracks me up.) If you're visiting D.C. in the winter months when it's freezing out, ducking into the Metro (especially at Smithsonian) is a lifesaver warm, quick, and drops you right in the heart of everything. Parking downtown is a nightmare and wallet-killer, so snag a cheaper hotel farther out, jump on the train, and zoom in without the hassle. It's a smart, affordable way to get around, and if you're a train nerd like me, that wild ride might just become the story you tell for the rest of your life. Highly recommend 5 stars for the nostalgia alone!
