Opened in 1891 to designs by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro, the main facade at street level is a wonderful example of Neo-Manueline architecture, named after the heavily decorative hybrid classical-gothic architecture unique to Portugal. It's sinuous curves and entrance arches are reminiscent of Art Nouveau. Once inside, a modern escalator takes you up to the spacious train shed. There's a ticket office, ticket machines and cafe. Trains to Sintra leave every 20 minutes on weekdays (every 10 minutes at rush hour), and half hourly at weekends.

I had walked inside to look at the gift shop on the left and saw the Starbucks on the right, but never saw any indication of a train station there, either. Once I KNEW that it was the train station, I looked harder for a sign, and it was up the elevator from the front of the building. Tickets are at the top of the double elevator and should have been easy to get, but I had to try 3 different machines to get it to work. The machine will encourage you to get a round trip, and know that the round trip ticket is all on one ticket. You won't be issued 2 tickets. The ticket is needed to get in and out of the stations, so make sure to hang onto it until after you've left your final destination. The place is super clean...one of the cleanest train stations I have been in. I wanted this review out here in case someone needed it. I hope it helps folks to avoid the couple of hiccups I had there.

The station is handicapped accessible with escalators and elevators between the street level and the platform level. The station has two tracks that go through the center and therefore, there are two side platforms. There is step-free access and free transfer between the two platforms. If there is a below-ground transfer to the Estação do Rossio for regional trains, I couldn't find it. Upstairs to the street, walk across the plaza, into the station. Platforms are clean and there is a sign indicating how long until the next train is due to arrive. Rossio is between Martim Moniz (toward Telheiras) and Baixa-Chiado (toward Cais do Sodré). This is a very old station and comes with that some challenges, such as escalators and elevators that do not work, poor signage, kiosks out of order, very grimy restrooms, and uneven stone flooring that makes rolling bags or heels challenging (and loud :-)). The signage and placement of the only available help desk at one far end was a bit challenging. We did love the roof architecture on the top level as you wait for your train to arrive.

Overall, despite the cool design, has seen better days and could use a refresh/restoration.

It is an underground station and while there are plenty of stairs, there are also lifts between the platform level and the ticketing mezzanine and between the mezzanine and street level. The station opened in 1959 as part of the original Lisbon metro and has since been expanded and retrofitted a couple of times. Today, the platforms appear quite modern and clean. There are many restaurants and hotels in the Praça dos Restauradores. The obelisk in the plaza is a monument that commemorates the end of the Iberian Union in 1640 and the independence of Portugal from Spain. At the ticketing level, you'll find the usual automated ticket vending machines and turnstiles. This is one of the busier stations on the network as it is close to some of the main tourist areas and plazas. Keep an eye on your wallet and other valuables. I loved the large tile mural on the walls of the station, which paid homage to the World's major metropolitan cities in a Kandinsky-esque style. With only two platforms, there are 3 city mural dedicated to them per platform. After a LOT of googling, I think have discovered that the artist of these murals might be a Portuguese artist by the name of Nadir Afonso, and his style of art is geometric abstraction. We purchased online 3 tickets for a railway from Lisbon -EntreCampos to Faro as we are making our…read moreway to Adgarve. It was already difficult because we don't speak the language, assuming Portuguese maybe easy to understand because i speak Spanish, we figure it should be fine. My advise, be prepared for the unexpected, when we arrived at the train station few shops were open for service at 11am. The 1st floor is the only area that has a sibgle 27" that is abiut to go. This monitor displays can barely be seen and the information is not updated very often. The area near the supermarket had a ticket booth, in which they spoke English and they directed me to plataform #4. The monitor sadly only gives you updates within 30 mins of your train departure, which makes no sense. A few wide guys are always trying to peddle their services to act as translator or to guide you to your train, others just outright ask you for money as they see you as a target because you carry luggage and backpack. As a New Yorker, i can smell the bullshit from a mile a way and i can spot trouble makers from my daily travels on the MTA in NYC. So of course i got approach and i didnt fall for it but others were not so lucky. Just from speaking out loud, these people can spot Americans- so becareful. The entire station has a police officer at the entrance but his presence was not convincing as it did not detered the homeless or trouble makers. Anyways my train was late 20mins, no updates on the boards. The most hilarious part is that when it finally showed up at 2:35pm, the one board that tells you the train pulling into the station still had the last train that had departed 5 mins ago on display... imagine the people that just got to the station and got in the wrong train.. No way to describe it but- real shit hile station that makes the MTA subway system a first class system in terms of information access. The train itself was crowded, only 1 toilet working, storing luggage on the overhead compartment is difficult unless you are carrying a small luggage. The air conditioner was barely working, at times it would stop and it got really warm on there and when you stepped seated for almost 3.5 hrs, it really sucks. I dont think you need to know anymore, other than be prepared for a very poor experience. By the way, there is assigned seats so dont just grab any empty seat because they will ask you to move if your tickets dont match your assigned seats. By the way the bathroom are on the 2nd floor and you have to pay € 0.50 to use them, by the way a lot more cleaner than the restroom in the train.

Estação de Metro Picoas (Picoas Metro Station) is one of the original 11 stations on the Lisbon…read moreMetro, opening in 1959, in parts it is showing signs of age compared to other stations on the network, although it's still easy to follow the station from the street to platform, and the art is unique. The station was refurbished in 1995. If you're staying at the Doubletree by Hilton - Fontana Park hotel, this is one of the closest Metro stations, as it is only a short walk away (Under 300 meters), although Saldanha (one stop away on the yellow line) provides a connection onto the Red line so might be a better option if heading to the Airport. It is located on the Yellow Line only. The Lisbon Metro seemed straightforward to navigate between lines and in stations. Ticket machines have an English language option. The pricing is reasonable, costing €1.80 for unlimited use of the metro within one hour, however, you must also purchase the "navegante card" for 50 cents, this can be re-loaded, but with it only being a tiny bit of paper, it is easy to damage or misplace, and the cost does add up if you keep leaving it behind. The Lisbon Metro as a whole is unique and many of the stations have interesting artwork which can be a tourist attraction in its own right. At Picoas, the platforms were a little dark, but they still felt pleasant due to the artwork, there was also a small number of seats while waiting for the trains to arrive.

Thcis train station is close to the Alfama-like (but non-touristy) neighborhood of Madragoa, and the nearest station to the Assembleia de Republica. You can also climb up to Bairro Alto from here, if your legs are in good shape (or if you're trying to get them to be that way....) Nearby, down by the Tagus, there's a bike trail - extending from Cais do Sodre' all the way down to Alca'ntara.
