We had a fantastic time at Weary Feet Hostel-- Eric "Juke box" was full of fun stories and we…read morecannot wait to go back to meet Brigid "Purple Haze" next time. They've recently acquired the hostel from The former owner who still lives in the area and as Foodies themselves make incredible meals. For supper the first night we had cheese stuffed shells with arrabiata meat sauce and the second night we had "Mexican lasagna." Both nights there was a yummy salad. Eric mentioned how much he likes it when gluten-free hikers come through as he is (completely) gluten-free himself, and it allows him to have second crack at any leftovers. Breakfast was amazing buttermilk flapjacks, and eggs mixed with spinach, as well as sausage for those who want it. (And infinite amounts of coffee for those who need that.). The bath house was recently built -- 3 giant shower stalls with locking doors (but Al fresco so I'm not sure how that would feel during colder months.). We got one of the private rooms which had three beds and could've slept five comfortably, but the toilet is communal as per usual at hostels. There is a stream with small fish, large crawdads and some cool giant pollywogs on the other side of the gravel driveway. The front yard of the property is a field where we (with other resting hikers) watched an impressive number of butterflies and we understand the firefly show is impressive during June-July. The biodiversity of the Appalachian Trail on either side of this property is unparalleled. I read it's the most biodiverse temperate forest in the world and I believe it. Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit!

He and his…read morewife moved to Hampton TN, way up in the mountains, built a home with a connecting hostel just a short walk from the Appalachian Trail, with the intent to host AT hikers, and volunteer to maintain what was at the time a very poorly maintained section of the Appalachian Trail. It's a special place place rooted deep within the long distance hiking community. The hostels amenities are very simple. Bunks, wood stove, showers, laundry, free shuttle, kitchen. It's perfect for hikers. And anyone who meets Bob will tell you he is the salt of the earth.

Bob Peoples has got to be one of the friendliest members of the AT society I have met yet. He was extremely cheerful and loves to laugh and joke with everyone. At his hostel you can bunk, or if you're a couple and there aren't many hikers staying the night you arrive, he will let you stay in one of his private cabins (one is a tree house). You are also able to shower and do laundry during your stay, and they will also shuttle the group into town. We had a medical problem, so Bob made a special trip into town just for us. It is not the cleanest, newest hostel we've been to, however none thus far have been. It was the atmosphere that made it incredible. I just hope hikers don't take advantage of this gem and they give back to his cause. We had such an amazing experience at this hostel!
