It's a cozy little theatre. We went to a 5pm show on a Saturday night and we were the only ones in the theatre. We walked into Theatre #2 and it smelled like the weightroom at the high school I work at. Seats were comfy and the sound quality was great. The workers at the front were also very nice. read more

Merrill's Roxy Cinema - Cinema Near Me - Burlington, Vermont

I love how this local theater screens independent films that are not shown anywhere within 5 hours of Burlington. That said, it is not the best viewing experience given how loud the staff is in the projection room. If you go here, make sure it's a loud movie, rather than an arthouse flick. I saw Tár yesterday and all throughout the film (2.5) hours I could hear the staff talking, arguing, laughing above me in the projection room. It makes it near impossible to enjoy a movie when someone is talking all throughout it. Although I briefly left the theater and asked an employee to quiet down, he said "We'll try." They did not. Needless to say, I won't be coming back to this theater anytime soon. read more

This little independent movie theater is part of a dying breed that I go out of my way to support. We watched the Disaster Artist here in a tiny theater, and everything was just as it should be. Seats were comfy, the theater was clean, and the picture and sound quality were great. We sat at the back of the theater and didn't feel like the screen was too small, unlike another reviewer here. We were the only people in the theater, which was sad, but at the same time, we felt like we had it all to ourselves. Prices are a little cheaper than at the movie theater chains, and there's a student discount of $1 off as well. I think we paid a little under $9 each for an evening movie, which was reasonable. Like all smaller cinemas, the selection is more limited, but 6 movies at one time is more than I've seen at other similar local cinemas, and they do play some blockbusters, not just indie movies. No complaints here. Just one satisfied theatergoer. read more

My honest review of this place, we walked in to the fresh smell of popcorn and a vintage scenery. We got our tickets, popcorn and candy. The employees were very welcoming and nice and I didn't have any issues until i went into the theater where the movie was showing. When I walked in i got a whiff of the smell of sweat, as I was looking for a seat I selected one until I noticed it was sticky and covered in candy (so was the floor). After that I found some good seats in the back. I sat down and ate some of my popcorn. The popcorn was not good. It tasted odd, 0/100 popcorn. The movie was okay and the seats were comfortable. As I left I got a "have a good night" from the polite staff. Overall I would not recommend this place. read more

Great little "vintage" theater. Staff is really nice. Felt very at home. The setup is a little dated but that would require major renovations. Single occupancy bathroom on the first floor can serve as handicap/gender neutral. Overall great experience. read more

Merrill's Roxy Cinema - The staff is really nice and we had a great visit. Would definitely come back. - Cinema Near Me - Burlington, Vermont

Tiny old theatre that's been around forever. descent indie movie selection. Nice staff but the owner is an absolute POS. Rude, unprofessional and treats staff terribly. Would not recommend as a first choice to go see a movie read more

The theatre is small and a little outdated, but I guess that's what gives it character, right? The screens aren't that big and they only accommodate a few people. I guess since I'm from California I'm used to having things on the big screen with lots of people around. This is definitely not one of my favorite theatres to go to, but since it's conveniently located in downtown Burlington, I don't really have many other options! When you walk in, you basically buy your ticket right at the convenience counter where you buy popcorn and your drinks. Men's and women's bathrooms are all upstairs. The reason I give it three stars is because if you're a student at UVM, they have a great promotion going on for free student tickets with student id. It's a great partnership really and it's what keeps me interested in coming back! read more

One of the best places in Burlington. Actually shows indy and art movies and makes you think. BUT, there are the mainstream movies shown as well...I would think to assist in paying to keep the place open. It's small and as with all movie theaters the price for snacks is over the top. Easy access from Church St., so a good break on a hot day to go sit in the AC and relax. read more

Worst movie theater experience in memory. Saw The Fighter (great movie) which was detracted from due to the theater. The screen was neither wide enough or tall enough for the film. Words were off the sides of the screen. I know this place is downtown and has scarce space, but the theater we were in is the same size as my living room. The seats have been there for a long time and are not comfortable and make it a challenge for anyone trying to get out of the row during the movie (had my chair pushed more than a few times). The sound system is also sub-par. The audio is so muddy that at times it is hard to make out words. The only redeeming quality of the theater is that it is 13$ for 2 as apposed to 12$ per person. Wouldn't go again. read more

This is a great little theater in downtown Burlington. It has that hometown feel about it. The theater was really clean, but I was at the first show of the day. The popcorn was fresh and crunchy. The staff was very friendly and chatted with customers to help the movie experience. The restrooms were also very clean added to the whole enjoyment of this visit. read more

Sure, the Roxy is old and and small. It doesn't appear to have changed much since I started going there in the '90s when it was called the Nickelodeon. But, that's part of its charm. It's not trying to be a big deal (the owner has The Majestic for that, or the Palace 9 if you want middle road). It's the art house film club, but being the only theater in town, it also caters to some mainstream cravings. There are so many films that only come here in VT or we'd all be going without it going to Boston to see them. The special events are really special, and you'll find them nowhere else. For such a small space inside of big business, the Roxy does an amazing job of being unique but still trying to cover everyone's desires. read more

Roxy Cinemas is my favorite movie theater in the Burlington area. Unlike it's competitors it's located downtown and generally specializes in less mainstream films, focusing more on independent ones, though this isn't always the case. The theater is small and old. It has perhaps 5 screens but none of the showing rooms are that big. My guess is it may utilize more basic sound and movie showing quality then some of it's bigger more mainstream competition, though I don't mind that. As long as I'm seeing a movie that is smart and satisfying I'm not super fussed with the sound or graphics being cutting edge. My only gripe with the Roxy (other than its name which is sort of horrible) is the same I have of most local movie theaters. In general they sell the most crap sweets you can get. It would be so nice to have some real chocolate and sweet options, not the low quality, high-priced drivel sold everywhere that doesn't taste good to begin with and is ultimately unsatisfying. Why not sell some local pastries and chocolates? There are so many great options. Cookie Love cookies. Lake Champlain Chocolate or Daily Chocolates. Queen City's Frozen Chocolate Truffle Pops (yum), just to list a few. Yes, these options are more expensive to buy and they probably couldn't get a fraction of the mark up that they would like, but I'd be so much happier going to the theater. Or at the very least, they should offer a variety to please all movie goers. Let's face it, the majority of the people that enjoy art-house type movies probably have more sophisticated tastes than Raisinets. There is an awesome theater in London, it's my favorite, where there is a café that anyone can go to have really nice pastries, lunch items and sweets accompanied by coffee and teas, etc. And then can bring them into the theater to eat (though I think most people come early and eat and then watch the movies or just come for a treat and never see a movie). I really wish one of the theaters in the Burlington area would do this. Let's face it, the Roxy is the best option for this, it might not be completely practical, but it would certainly be a crowd pleaser and attract a loyal following. read more

Small comfortable theaters and great movie selections. A gem of downtown Burlington!

I think this theatre has been open forever. It is badly in need of a renovation. The staff is friendly and it's location is ridiculously awesome, if your rolling around church street and you want to see a flick, it's only one block away and shows first run movies. The theaters are really small and the chairs are comfortable. read more

Very small theatre that needs some renovations. I have lived in Burlington my whole life and it hasn't changed a bit. Time for a change Roxy! The quality of the screens aren't good, the seating isn't the best, but if I want to go to a movie in walking distance I am glad the option is available. read more

Good, independent theater. It's very conveniently located in the heart of Burlington. The service is good enough. The seats are nice but the auditoriums are longer than they are wide so it seems as though the screen is really far away. The screens themselves are not the best quality. The theater basically only plays limited release indie films so if you want big blockbuster movies, go to Palace 9 or Majestic 10. All in all, this theater is a small but nice theater that is good for smaller movies. read more

Clean and comfortable. The options of movies to chose from are much different than other theatres, making it a nice alternative if you are in the mood for a film vs. a blockbuster movie. One comment on here was that this place is small and outdated.. not the case. It is cozy! Some of the theatres are smaller, but the screen is proportionate. They have done a great job with the space they have! read more

I love that this theater is downtown and how quaint it is. They always have a great selection of indie movies with a few mainstream ones as well. read more

One Night Artsy, One Night Oscar!!! Roxy Cinema is everything an independent theater should be. Personalized customer service, the owner/management are approachable and open to ideas from customers and, the vibe in the theater is homey and welcoming. The owners run two other area commercial theaters in (Majestic10 in Williston and Palace9 in S. Burlington) so the trio offers something for everyone if you're not an independent theatre buff (yes, I've been to all three as a student and an adult, single, with a date and with teenagers). Together, there's a complete listing of arts and entertainment from current films to eclectic, foreign, family, 3D, short films, blockbusters. The theaters are well-known by the locals and college students. They often host premiere parties, charity events, and even live-stream local and cultural entertainment (e.g., the Majestic holds a "Live at the Met" Opera series which I just learned about!). Burlington is lucky to have such a wonderful independent theater in the heart of downtown and The Roxy fits perfectly into the robust community. A must-visit in the Burlington area and worth checking out their website which links all three theaters (http://merrilltheatres.net/index.html). My favorite is the Roxy because they carefully select and advertise the independent films they show and always have a few blockbusters playing at the same time. One night artsy, one night Oscar. read more

Went here with a friend during the matinee for the cheaper movie prices. We went to see Beautiful Boy, which was an emotional rollercoaster. The theatre itself seemed very small before we walked in, but sure enough it was hosting at least five different showings. Tickets were fairly inexpensive, and we were able to get a student discount which was nice. The individual showing booths had a decent amount of seats, no IMAX that's for certain, but still a modest amount. The seats were comfortable and their armrests were moveable, which was a plus. The only complaint I really had was the price of concessions. It was over $7 for a small bag of popcorn, or anything small for that matter, which is about the price of a ticket! Many theaters are also adopting a "bucket" system, where you buy one bucket for a larger sum (say $15-20) and then are eligible for discounted refills after that. This theatre did not have any such system, which I found quite disappointing, as I could see myself being a regular here. read more

The film selection was nice because most of the films were independent and not big box office blockbusters. The screens and seating are decent - no frills. No stadium style seating or huge screens. However, the content is what really matters and it is well chosen. read more

this place was kind of surreal.. I entered looking for the ticket booth which was conveniently located at the snack bar.. hahah it was just small and cute and me of small town.. which I guess it is.. the seats are comfy.. the staff.. well the one person I saw working was nice.. its also really easy to walk out your theatre and see another... because the girl working kept ducking out to see her boyfriend haha read more

While I have been a fan of the Roxy and live just two blocks away, my experience just now prompts me to warn other patrons. I went to the 4:10 showing of Spectre. From the previews on the sound was bad -- dialogue OK but music and action horrible. The manager came in and I spoke to him and he said he would fix. When movie started and still not fixed I went to concession stand and staff said manager was working on it. When I asked for a refund after the movie was over the same manager I spoke to said there was no problem -- yet other patrons were standing by me complaining. It was the only time I could see the movie with my kids this weekend is why I stayed. While he did give me three passes that are good for one month he was rude and the whole experience has soured me on this theater. A loyal customer no more. read more
