I am absolutely in love with this place! It's literally one of a kind here in Vermont, and it's generally cheaper and a more satisfying way to take a group or family trip to the movies- think of all the memories something like experiencing the drive-ins brings?! The first time I went here was as a child in the early 90s I believe to see "Indian in the cupboard" with my family. Years later I'm married now and still able to go to the same place! It's changed a little to keep up with the times, but still just as great as ever. You pay one price per a car and can bring your own stuff in. The snack bar is still great and there for your convenience. Included in the one price is a double feature, so you can watch one movie, stay through intermission and watch another. The only downside to this place is mosquitos, it can get pretty buggy during the summer, but if you bring bug spray or come armed with citronella you will be fine. Despite that, this experience is so worth it! read more

I was a bit off put that the attendants were so concerned with the position of hatches versus the very noisy engines kept running throughout the movie, which technically against Vermont idling laws. It was really hard to hear the movies sound. I'm not sure we'll be quick to come back if they don't improve their rules around drive in courtesy. Also, one of the parking attendants was extremely overzealous, he picked up our stuff and was moving it around without asking. He was friendly while doing it he also a bit over bearing on exact location. read more

LOVED the retro animated shorts before each film and the 1970s style Feature Presentation intro (and not just the visual but with the original music!) It really elevated the whole drive-in experience. Those alone made it worthwhile for me. The Pic Mosquito Coil ad cracked me up - a mosquito falling backwards dead, holding a bouquet of flowers once it hits the ground?! Such classic animation. Loved going here, will come back, and I would definitely love to check out the hotel too. I would love it if they had a 70s movie night, and classic horror movie night (something like an original Wolfman / Dracula double feature for the Halloween season.) I would bring a portable radio next time to tune in to the radio station to pick up the movie audio. Leaving the car running isn't always doable or ideal. I haven't been to a drive in theater in over 20 years, so it was fun to give the kids the experience of going to one for the first time. We parked with the tail gate facing the screen and let the kids sit in the back with the hatch on the SUV raised out of the way. 4 stars for good looking screens and decent sound - we did not visit the snackbar or use the facilities. Parking spots are first-come, first-serve and ticketing is done online. Prices may seem a bit steep at first, but compared to indoor movie going it's reasonable - and you get a double feature of you want! read more

This was my first drive-in movie theater, EVER and I absolutely love this place! For a mere $7.50, you get 2 movies. Sweet lord! I usually pay 10 bucks or more for one showing, but here you get double features- I find all of it very amazing. The area is massive- 4 towering screens situated in different areas on the green. I give the snack bar a 2 thumbs up, simply because they serve fries. I can't ever get fries at Regal or AMC! Another plus is that it's A-OK to bring your own snacks and drinks. However, there is one downside- the bugs. I was there in late May, early June and everything was dandy but when July rolled around, it was mosquito central and not too enjoyable. This was our first time going to a drive-in and it was a great experience! The mosquitos were a little crazy but within a half hour the air had cooled enough to send them running. For the price of one ticket, you get to watch two movies and can change screens as you please. We did end up there close to 1 in the morning, but it was well worth it. Restrooms are clean and the snack bar has a little of everything (including bug spray!) With very reasonable prices. We had a great time and can't wait to do it again! read more

Pretty disappointing customer service. Came here as part of my bachelorette weekend with my family. There was a yelp offer of checking in here and getting a free medium popcorn. When I went to redeem it, the sales person was very nice but the person I assume to be a manager came over, stating very dismissively that there is no such thing as a free popcorn coupon and refused to honor it. When I showed her the yelp page that is clearly connected to their location and website she continued to dismiss me and refused to give it. Oh well. I love going to the movies, but I hate how expensive they've become! You have to pay for a $12 ticket, $5 popcorn... It's a nightmare! The drive in has resurrected the movie date night! $9 gets you into two movies! There are four screens which you can move between and plenty of grass to lay a blanket out on and stare up at the stars. Best of all you sneak in all the popcorn and beer you want. Just the fact that this place is still a functional drive-in makes it top notch in my book. I travel to other places and when I mention going to the drive-in, everyone looks shocked. It seems that there aren't a hell of a lot of drive-ins left. Double features rule, and every year, I think Labor day weekend they play 4 back to back in a dusk-til-dawn marathon, and still for the cost of a regular theater ticket. And they have a lovely greasy snack bar where you can get the usual movie theater fare as well as all manner of foods from the grill and deep fryer. And they still play the old campy shorts of cartoon food telling you to go to the snack bar. I love it! read more

It's a blast from the past and I enjoyed going here a few weekends ago. For starters I have not been to the Drive ins in years. I always seem to forget about this gem here in Vermont and a friend of mine reminded of this place. So myself and her had gone one night and it was awesome! The idea here is simple. You pay $8.00 per adult in the car and you drive up to any of the 4 screens and you just park your car! Then you switch your radio station to the correct channel and sit back and watch the movie. Easy right? It is. Where the Drive-ins really shine are the options you get. For one you can bring your own food and snacks. So your not feeling bad about sneaking them in if you have ever done that! (High school? :P) You also get to sit in the comfort of your own space. You can now talk during the movie without annoying anyone near you. Not to mention you get 2 shows for the price of one. So there must be a down fall here some where right? Well there is and its a minor one. The weather! Yes good ole Mother Nature can come along and ruin the night at the Drive in pretty easy. Here is the simple break down for you! It can rain, be to cold, be to hot, have to much humidity and then we have the bugs! No one likes being in a hot car with the windows rolled up. However, this not an issue with the Drive-ins directly so we can not fault them. You just have to plan your night carefully and be willing to deal with whatever gets tossed your way! We got lucky and the weather seemed pretty perfect out for the most part. We even saw a few meteor showers that night! Just to many clouds. Either way the Drive-ins are a great deal and during the cool summer nights and fall weekends its the best deal going in my opinion. Lets hope we keep our Drive-ins. The drive-in theater is such an iconic relic from the 1950s and 60s that most people from our generation never get to experience anymore. With the rise of real estate and the advent of technologies, you simply don't see these around, especially not in any large, urban cities. I was quite excited to finally experience one for myself last night. I found a $10 special online that included a double feature and two popcorns for two people. Normally, it's $7.50 for a double feature per person, which is still cheaper than watching a movie at a traditional theater. The Sunset Drive-In is situated in an obscure area in Colchester, but there's a Price Chopper nearby so you can stock up on food and snacks. Otherwise, the centrally-located snack bar also has really cheap food and drinks. The field has four large screens and each viewing area has slopes so you can angle your car upward toward the screen. It was pretty empty on a weekday so you get your choice of location. Two minor inconveniences were the bugs and mosquitos and also the constant fogging of the windshield. It was still a memorable experience to go to my first drive-in theater. read more

Loved this place so much!! The movie we saw sucked (Quiet Place) lol but the experience was great! Have never been to a drive-in and it was a lot of fun! Double feature was cool! Staff was great! Can be a little distracting to see another movie playing out of the corner of your eye but we blocked the windows with blankets, problem solved! They have twine if you forget a bungee. $9 for two movies is a steal anywhere these days! Highly recommend this place! Although it's a bit of luck scoring two great flicks back to back, it was nice to switch things up from your average movie theatre. $18 for both of us for the double feature, so reasonable. AWFUL! Spent half of the movie trying to get the sound working, our car radio wouldn't get their station and neither would our boombox. They nicely lent us a radio which wouldn't pick up the station EITHER!!! Three guys that worked there couldn't figure it out! We were promised a refund after the movie. We finished our snacks and watched the last half of Wonder Woman without sound, though I wasn't really sure what was even happening in the film. At the end of the movie, the head guy said we could NOT have our money back, he said we were supposed to leave an hour before, if we wanted a refund, but the other employee told us no such thing. A sucky time! Dishonest dealings or unbelievable incompetence, take your pick! If we do not receive a refund and an apology, I will DISrecommend this establishment to everyone I meet until the end of time! read more

I love the movies. In my adult life, I've probably seen close to 300 movies in a theatre. I've seen movies all over the country in tiny art-house cinemas, in large stadium-seating warehouses, in malls, in major cities, etc.; I even proposed to my wife in a movie theatre; but my favorite spot to see a movie is still the Sunset Drive-in. The drive-in is superior to all other theatres in nearly every way: - the prices are phenomenal. As other reviewers have noted, $7.50 for two movies (sometimes 3, and even 4) is crazy cheap. - the food can't be beat. I can't speak for the concession stand because I've never gotten food from them. I say the food can't be beat because you can bring your own! I've brought pizza, Thai, BBQ, sushi, sandwiches, and ice cream, to name only a few. And unlike other theatres, drive-ins don't discourage you from sneaking in candy. - You can bring your dog! Well-behaved dogs only, please. Our dog has been going to the drive-in with us since she was a puppy. Once the car is parked and the movie starts, she goes to sleep. I recommend wearing your dog out beforehand (a super long walk, trip to the dog park, a swim in the lake, etc.). She'll reward you by sleeping the whole night. Of course, if your dog does not do well when strangers are around, you should probably leave her at home. - You can bring pillows! My wife and I had our third date at the drive-in. We brought dinner (pulled pork), pillows, and we wore our pajamas. Best third date ever. - There isn't a bad seat in the house. Stadium seating theatres have finally found a solution to the problem drive-ins solved a long time ago. Cars are parked on small hills and pointed up to the screen so that even an SUV parked in front of you won't block your view. - You can watch the movie outside. Even better than the car, turn up the volume in your car (each of the four screens is assigned its own radio station that plays the sound for the movie), bring a blanket or lawn chairs, and watch the movie under the stars. - If the movie is awful, you can switch to another movie. As another reviewer noted, the owners don't care if you switch movies. Just do so quickly and as quietly as possible so as not to ruin another moviegoer's experience. The drive-in isn't perfect. As other reviewers have said, bugs can be an issue. So bring bug spray even if you plan on sitting in your car (if it's hot out and you don't want to kill your battery or run out of gas, you're going to want to roll the windows down). And for the 20 or so movies I've seen there, there have been two technical problems (one movie stopped for a few minutes before starting up where it left off; and the last movie I saw seemed to have some sort of burn mark on the reel that appeared every now and then). So if you're a movie snob, you may want to head to your local digitally-mastered/3-D/superplex theatre; of course, you'll then have to deal with all the texters, and the folks kicking your seat from behind, and the talking, and the sounds of the guy next to you eating popcorn, and it's hard to smuggle in a sandwich when you're wearing shorts and a t-shirt. But for everyone else who doesn't mind an occasional bug bite, and who doesn't need to wear 3-D glasses, I recommend the Sunset Drive-in over any other movie venue in the area. read more

Going to this drive-in has become an annual rite of summer for my family. From the "vintage" playground equipment (translated: it looks like they haven't replaced the same slide, swings, see-saw and merry-go-round that have likely been there since the 1960's) to the old-school concession stand, I always get the sense that I have stepped inside of a time warp when I visit this venue; and that is not a bad thing! Absolutely the best movie going experience around. For $7.50, you get two movies you can watch any way you like. We prefer to all sit outside our cars in our chairs with all our junk food and laugh together. It's totally relaxed and fun. The Sunset Drive In has been owned and continuously operated by the same family for over 60 years, which is amazing this day in age. There are 3 generations working there now. The snack bar is amazing, they make a lot of their stuff themselves, like the delicious fries. I always get a season pass, which brings the price of the ticket down even further and gets a discount for one of the people in your car. Every time I go somewhere else to watch a movie it just isn't the same, and I'll keep coming back as long as they'll have me! read more

Yes, Virginia, drive-in movie theaters still do exist. They may be few and far between nowadays with those silly IPhones, Droids, and other bizarre gadgets that can play movies in the palm of your hand, but my goodness, there still is some sense of nostalgia somewhere out there and it is at the Sunset Drive In located in Colchester, Vermont. Where else would you expect it? Movies start at the big, dusty parking lot on two screens at around 8:00 pm, or whenever dusk comes around. I'd say 8 is the safe time. Admission is based per person, not per car and is $8.00, which is absolutely reasonable for movies nowadays, but I think it was still a bit expensive considering we were using the car as seats. You pay for the experience though and the price is still rather low, so no complaints really... Remember Virginia, practice proper etiquette and make sure that if your car is taller than other cars near you that you do not park in front of them and please, please, please do not talk all throughout the movie! AND TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF!! There is a small concession stand that sells typical movie theater snacks (also at reasonable prices) but just beware that all of the food for sale has been exposed to the outdoors, namely, the mosquitos. The stand sells mosquito nets in addition to food and in all honesty, it is a good thing to buy because the Sunset is riddled with them. After a half hour or so I gave up and sat in the car trying not to scratch myself to a bloody pulp (I am severely allergic to mosquitos). Overall, the sound comes out great for a drive-in, screens are big and the picture comes out nicely. The experience is becoming rarer to get as well with the standardization of HD and IMAX theaters throughout the country. The Sunset Drive In and any other drive in theater are definitely stops one needs to make in their lifetime. It's an experience one needs to have and see in order to believe. read more
