My wife and I have visited Burlington once or twice a year for the past eight years, and Silver Maple has always been a destination; we enjoy the unique art available there and love the mounting. Don't, however, go there expecting any good service. Our last experience (the morning of October 13, 2012) was the worst.
We entered the store a little before noon. The person on duty, a maturing man, was speaking with a friend and did not acknowledge us at all. Even signaling for help got us no attention; apparently his discussion of "Our Bodies, Ourselves" was more important than attending a customer with cash in hand.
After his friend left, the man on duty still did not acknowledge my wife or I. Instead, he decided it would be best to neaten up the shelves, pushing me out of his way to get to postcards that needed straightening, apparently. I honestly felt like I was being treated like a potential thief. In case anyone is wondering, no, we were not unkempt in appearance. We were dressed very nicely for a day on the town in celebration of our anniversary.
Frustrated, I was ready to walk out of the store. My wife, who wanted some information on a painting, tried to talk to the man on duty. He ignored her and called a friend - NOT a call to a customer, but a personal call - to ask how they were holding up after last night because they hit the sangria hard.
Honestly, this experience has pretty much soured me on the place. I don't expect to be treated like royalty wherever I go, but the basic niceties - acknowledging the presence of customers, asking if there is anything they can do to help, etc - were not in evidence at all.
Sorry, Silver Maple, for ignoring not only me, but my wife when she tried to engage the person on duty in direct conversation, has probably cost you a customer who has spent several hundred dollars in your establishment over the past few years. read more
