We ate an excellent lunch at The Angel when in Burford on our walk through the Cotswolds…read more This is is a pub for the Hook Norton Brewery so they have the excellent Hook Norton beers, including cask ales, all in excellent condition. The food was also excellent, with steak pie in an excellent shortcrust pastry, chips, minted pea soup, and burger. The place is charming insude and out, a traiditonal old stone pub, with nice garden seating in back. Service was very friendly and we enjoyed the fact that they served food even after the normal lunch hour range. We had been told to go to the Royal Oak just down the street but they had stopped serving lunch so we tried this place and they were still serving here. We would gladly go back.

It's a nice pub and establishment. When you enter there's a bar and some cozy indoor seating with natural light. Nothing fancy. There's also a wonderful outdoor patio, which is where we sat. There's two floors to it and most of the seating is covered. The service by workers were all friendly and nice. We ordered with them then paid at the bar. We shared Duck and Orange Pate. It was thick, tasty, and complex but well balanced. I had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich--the mixed leaves were tasty, the chicken crispy, and honestly it was a filling sandwich. I would say I'd like more in between the bread but it did fill me up. You've got plenty of pub options in Burford, but we quite enjoyed our time at The Angel. It's off Witney Street and a nice place to dine!

I thought we were going just down the lane but it felt like through a valley, into the woods, across a dale, on a dark, dark (also one way) road. I fell in love with the building, old of course, but with new additions. Sat next to the warm fireplace and had a pleasant conversation but also listened in on others. Love the old men who brought their dogs and kept their hats on. The next time it was just us and the food! Oh, the dreamy, local, gourmet, yet hearty food. I ask the husband very nicely to make sure it is on our list of places to visit and we go every time. The menu is seasonal but you'll always find a nice pasta dish, a wonderful fish dish and some hearty meat plate. I'm very close to saying it's my favorite place to eat in all of England. It is pricey--even without alcohol, it's usually over 20 pounds per person and the service can sometimes be slow (always busy). But I love that I can always order something that I know I can't make or get anywhere else and I love that it's out of the way. My secret place that's not so secret.

Cozy village inn ambience with well appointed table settings to promote exquisitely prepared English countryside cuisine. Courteous service built in to the ambience. Would definitely go back to on a return trip to the Cotswold.

This has been my favorite restaurant as we travel through the Cotswolds. It's also an inn with…read moreseven en-suite rooms. They source as much food as possible from the local area. They even have a raised bed garden behind the inn. The inn is in a stunningly beautiful building in the stunningly beautiful village of Upper Oddington, east of Stowe on the Wold. We had a 7:00 pm reservation and were seated immediately in the period dining room. The patrons consisted of local residents at the bar, inn guests and other travelers. The dining room was very clean. The wait staff was very attentive, sharpely dressed and very polite. Norman, the owner, explained the difference between cask and keg beers and allowed me sample several ales and ciders. I selected the cask drawn amber ale from North Cotswold Brewery. It had excellent flavour and a clean finish. Norman also checked on our meal several times. He was very engaging and fun to talk with. Next we ordered dinner. My wife had the ribeye steak with peppercorn sauce, chips, sautéed mushroom and onion rings. The steak was prepared exactly as ordered. The peppercorn sauce was so good she used it on her chips also. The mushroom had excellent flavour and complimented the steak and peppercorn sauce. She had a 1/2 pint of Thatchers Golden Cider, which was also very good. I ordered the special, crispy pork belly with a sweet patato purée, fondant potatoes and roasted new carrots. Everything was excellent and complimented each other. We finished the evening with coffee and the sticky toffee pudding. It was moist, flavourful, drizzled with a caramel sauce and accompanied by a dollop of excellent vanilla ice cream. We didn't need it but finished the whole thing. My wife said it's the best dessert she has ever had. We had an excellent meal and a wonderful time in a lovely setting. People from Stowe, Bourton on the Water, Chipping Camden and even Cheltenham need to get out there. I would go every week if I didn't live 3,000 miles away.

Gourmet desserts. Salmon encruste was excellent as was the whole Sole. Tried a standard pub dish, beef and mushroom pie and it was heavenly homemade with a delicate crust. Plus the owner is an oenophile, so there's a very nice wine list including an extensive list of wines by the glass. Friendly staff. What an unexpected treat and a great blend of traditional and new. Well done!!!
