I was going to be in the city for an event so I picked this restaurant for dinner with my friends. It goes without saying, right when I was browsing through the menu online I already got excited. Link to make reservations on the restaurant's website does not work, so I had to call in. Street parking. We arrived at least 20 minutes before our reservation but it was not a problem and they sat us right away. All servers were kind and friendly. Extensive menu. I was shocked by such cheap prices. Passion fruit margaritas, taste amazing and decently strong! For an appetizer we had "Tostolami" fried plantains topped with salami in a creole sauce. This sauce is to die for. For my dinner, I went with the fried pork chops and 'morro' rice with pigeon peas. As sides we also ordered more tostones and queso frito. These portions were huge for the price! I loved it. Food presentation was great, fresh and steaming hot. I was very very very satisfied with my whole meal. Huge portion, I had to take leftovers home! My friends had the "Chimichurri Steak" and "Ceviche", they were both very pleased as well. Very decent price overall. If you love Spanish food, or it's your first time trying... I highly recommend! During my years in college, and coming into a new location, I was struggling to find a Dominican place around me and even then to be deviled to my apartment. I'm truly grateful for the food, especially the Moro, COÑO que bueno ese arroz taba, especially when you add in the carne de plancha. I would have gave it five stars, but the only downfall was 1. I used to love this place. I get excited thinking about their rice and fried pork but their takeout service is truly lacking. I ordered two rice plates, one pork chop the other steak and other things like a chocolate flan. Mind you I live pretty far away and drove all the way to Boston to pick it up, imagine my disappointment when I got home and there was no steak and no flan. Went here on a double date (4 of us) Saturday night and loved it. I had low expectations going in, because Dominican food is not always very vegan friendly. I have heard though from friends (non-vegans) that this place is great so I knew the others in my party would eat well (just maybe not me?) We got there early - around 6:30pm so there was no wait as it wasn't too busy. Each couple got the cassava with the garlic sauce. It was ok, the garlic sauce is VERY garlicky. I got the sangria which was delicious and really strong! And it had REAL FRUIT in it, not just orange slices, yum!! One of the best in Boston for sure. My friends got beer. I talked to the server about what vegetarian and vegan options were available to me since there wasn't anything specifically labeled on the menu. She was very polite and super helpful. I suggested doing a mix plate of sides: the plantains (both sweet and green) are vegan, the rice and beans and coconut peas (mixed with rice is called Spanish Rice) are vegan (she said no butter and no chicken stock), the side salad with vinaigrette dressing (on table), and the eggplant appetizer (SO GOOD! you HAVE to get it). The eggplant was the best by far, everyone tried it and loved it. I don't really understand how you eat it though as an appetizer, because it reminds you of a Mediterranean or Indian dish but it doesn't come with bread or rice, so you feel like it lacks something to use to dip into the dish. But as a part of your entree it was perfect. She also said they could do a vegetarian and vegan mofongo as well. You could get it made without the chicken stock and they would use the garlic sauce (no butter) over veggies. So when I come back I may try that, though that garlic sauce would be a little overwhelming if it was your entire entree. My boyfriend and friends got meat dishes - chicken and pork? I regularly don't roam around Roxbury often because it's a catastrophic borough with constant appearances by life-threatening fiascoes. I previously believed it was anticlimactic in terms of restaurant selections, but I was proven dead wrong. I've been to a shitload of restaurants recently (most of which I take for granted) but Merengue is extraordinary and memorable to say the least. It exemplifies why I cherish my latino heritage. This vibrant joint acheives excellence so effortlessly. Where else can I eat authentic Dominican dishes without having to fly to my country of origin? At one of Boston's best of course! Let's start with the decor. Purely traditional! Once I was inside, I felt as though I was in Santo Domingo, not the heart of ghettoville. The bona fide architecture, which accurately resembles antique D.R. countryside houses (known as "Bohios") will leave many Boston-area Dominicans with their jaws dropped. Now onto the service, which is borderline outstanding! Want to be provided with gratitude you can't get anywhere else? Want to enter an environment where the employees are devoted to their occupation? Go to Merengue and experience it yourself. The food... ahh the food! Not overcooked into oblivion, divine and mouth-watering. It's been proven to produce maximal satisfaction! The menu is huge, so it may take you about 10 minutes to choose your entrée. Oh, and did I mention it's affordable? You can't go wrong with mofongo and a side of chicken broth & salad for $7.50. The ambience is neutral; not too full, not too empty. I recommend going at night between 7:00 & 10:00 if you wish for appropriate seating. And while you're there, be sure to strike a conversation with my cousin Hector (the founder/owner) and his wife Nivia. They are the definition of caring, kind and humble - unlike the majority of restaurant owners, who have a tendency to be arrogant and conceited. Totally legit, and we should know, because we've gone on vacation in Latin American countries that are sortof near the Dominican Republic. And besides, I happen to be a fan of Pedro Martinez. So we're pretty much honorary Dominicans. I got the whole red snapper because Always Pick Whole Fish - that's a life lesson that I'm giving to you for free - and of course it was kickass. Creole sauce won. Ceviche, made with lemon - I use lime myself, but lemon is legit too - very tasty. We both felt that some more spice wouldn't have been out of place. And the hot sauce on our table was bullshit so we couldn't just slop it on everything. But still: we're totally coming back here. This place is renowned for it's Dominican dishes. Don't be fooled by the appearance of the restaurant since this is nestled in one of Boston's toughest neighborhoods which is going through a revitalization stage thanks to the Mayor. Like most things, it's what is inside that matters like this restaurant. We came here for a farewell dinner for my fiance's coworker. The theme for that week was "South of the Border" and we landed here. Inside you'll find a lots of vivid colors on the wall, paintings, and other decors. The waitress was super friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. We started off with a few appetizers such as Ceviche de Camarones (Shrimps Marinated in Lemon Juice), Frituritas (Fried Meat Sampler Platter), and Mofongos (Mashed Plantains). We also ordered a few beers - The Presidente. Everything we ordered there came out with huge portions. The quality and taste surpassed our expectations. We all ordered our own individual dinner meals. I ordered the Almejas en Salsa Criolla (Mussels in Creole Sauce) and my fiance ordered the Chicharron de Cerdo (Fried Pork Skins). Our meals was fantastic and with huge portions! This restaurant is good for groups at a moment notice and is also known to do some catering. This place was pretty good but did not live up to the hype that surrounded it as one of Boston's best. Their red beans were excellent and I am guessing they cook them using hamhocks or a similar pork product due to the depth of flavor and the warm "i-love-you" comfort they evoke. The white rice was well done and fried chicken bites were tasty, though needed salt or perhaps some seasoning that would add a little salt, like garlic. Their fried sweet planting were not ripe enough and so not all that sweet. Their steak smothered in onions lacked seasoning all together. The decor was, as others noted, very well done and I was impressed by the number of non-latinos who were dining around us. The place was packed for a Thursday night and many of the clientele seemed to be regulars. There were a lot of young and older professionals as well as some young families... a real mixed crowd and generally pleased customers. The staff was very friendly and someone who appeared to be the owner or manager spent a lot of time walking around to see how the customers were doing and striking up a conversation with just about everyone. We will probably go back to try more of the menu but it would probably be on a night when we just don't feel like cooking versus a craving we a looking to satisfy. read more

First thing is that Yelp is wrong, this is Dominican food, not Spanish. The Dominican Republic was colonized by Spain and they speak Spanish but the menu is very different then you'd find at a Spanish resteraunt. Fortunately for me, I like Dominican food. It took a few minutes of standing there with the waitress and her boyfriend looking at me for her to come up and ask (via hand signals since her mouth was full of food) how many and if I wanted a table. Some people probably would have been put off but I thought it was funny. The dining room is large with red and blue walls and big paintings with lots of bright colors. Its a bit crowded with big tables and oversized whicker chairs so if you're looking for quiet and privacy this probably isn't your spot. When I first came in they were playing Latin pop fairly loudly but switched it to sort of light rock partway through. Still fairly energetic but minus the 808's. I ordered the grilled steak with peppers and onions, a side of sweet fried plantains, and a limonade (fresh lemonade) made with raw cane sugar. Great combo if you haven't tried it. The food was excellent and there was a lot of it. Steak was a bit tough but that's not unusual for a latin-style thin-cut fried steak. The grilled veggies that came with and the side of plantains i ordered balanced the flavors out perfectly. I had enough leftovers to eat a small meal late at night at my hotel. I took an uber here because this area is sketchy. Even the uber driver was nervous to drive around here because that's how sketchy it is. The restaurant itself is very clean and well organized. There's a hostess stand that's very welcoming. I went to the DR a couple years ago and have been searching for a DR restaurant to satisfy my cravings. I come from Seattle where there aren't ANY DR restaurants, so coming to the east coast, I was REALLY excited. My friend recommended this restaurant to me. Before coming, I already knew what I wanted to order--fried sweet plantains, chicken, rice, and beans. I needed this. My boyfriend ordered the steak option. We both loved our food very much, but I have to say, food in the DR is so much better--at least the chicken is. I wish I had ordered the chicken on the bone instead, but being a new diner and confused about the Spanish and limited description on the menu, I laid my eyes on the first chicken dish I saw. I do not know where to even start. I was in town for my friends bridal shower. After the shower, about 25 of us went here for dinner. They have a back room for large parties. We sat 12-14 per round table. Our waitress was a complete frazzled mess. It took her 30mins to take drink orders, then another 30mins for food orders. She wasn't answering questions, and cut us off if we tried to get her attention. The sad part was, she was only responsible for 12 of us at the table and she could barely handle that. It took about 1hr and 15mins for us to get food on the table. I had the fried chicken and rice. I have never eaten Dominican food in my life so I was quite surprised at the texture, consistency and sheer toughness of the "fried chicken." The chicken had little to no taste and reminded me of the blandness I experienced eating Brazil food. Not my favorite at all. However, the rice was heavenly. My friend's fiancé ordered the lobster/seafood rice which came served as a large mound of rice with seafood mixed in and it looked good. When the bill came, the server claimed the bill couldn't be split so we all had to figure out the bill which pissed me off for more than one reason. I would try this place again as the rice was super good and the frozen margaritas were thé absolute truth. After 2 you will feel like a winner. I have dined at Merengue many times before and previous experiences have been better. I ordered a delivery from Merengue yesterday. I placed my over the phone order at 3:57pm. The location to which the food would be delivered is literally no more than two miles in distance from the restaurant. Once I placed my order, I realized no approximate delivery time was given... At 5:15 I proceeded to call the restaurant concerning my delivery order which had been prepaid over the phone. The hostess told me they were waiting for their driver. She assured me he would he on his way within the next few minutes. Against my better judgement, instead of canceling my order I agreed to wait a few more minutes. At 5:35 I called the restaurant again, and an apologetic hostess told me the same thing. I asked if my food was cold and she said it shouldn't be, she would check and throw something else in... Or "see what she could do." When the food arrived 20 minutes later, it was cold, as expected. There was nothing thrown in to make up for the ridiculous wait time of 2 hours for a delivery within 2 miles of the establishment. This was an experience I would prefer not to relive. Whenever I want to chow down on some authentic Dominican food, I head to Merengue. When I am here, I automatically feel transported back to the DR. The decor is tropical, warm and vibrant. The waitstaff are always friendly and willing to explain any questions you have about the food. Definitely helpful if you have never had Dominican food before. The first time I came here, I was with a large group of people. We wanted to try a little of everything so we ordered the appetizer that is essentially a sampler. Each of us ordered a meal and some sides. Turns out, we ordered way too much food. The portions here are absolutely huge so be wary of that if you're with a small group. Despite this, we managed to finish everything we ordered due to the food's high level of deliciousness. If you can get past all that and find a close parking spot, you have to give this place a shot. This was my first time eating Dominican food... Garlicky For dinner: I had the Fried plantain cups filled with lobster and shrimp -- "Outstanding" Wife had -- the seafood paella -- generous portions size (true for all we ordered). Lots of seafood. Grilled seafood feast -- now that was awesome too. Again lots of food. Very fresh. Grilled perfectly. Flavored well. Chiccarron de pollo - my friend who has lived in the DR was craving that, and he gave the thumbs up! Atmosphere was great. Live music. Outstanding service. We had a twenty minute wait -- we didn't have reservations. It was sat night around 7:30 pm. The staff was excellent and kept us updating on the status of tables. Went here while visiting Boston. I love the decorations (my Dominican father was saying "we have that back in Dominican Republic") The staff were very nice and explained everything on the menu nicely, but our waitress forgot many stuff which we had to keep asking for over and over again. We had to wait a little bit more than I would've like to have waited for my food. The price for 4 people was 60 something dollars. I don't think it's bad especially for all the food you receive. The food was good- I had a red snapper fillet cook in vinaigrette with with fried plantains and a salad on the side. The fish i ate had to much salt! I tried my best to eat it because I was starving, but I only managed to eat less than half of it. They have really big portions of everything; My sister wasn't able to finish her sautéed cut steak, nor her rice and beans. (So that means you can have some left overs the next day!) Last Sunday was my third time at Merengue Restaurant. We live an hour away from this Restaurant but it's worth the ride. Once you step in the restaurant you forget what part of town you just parked your car. The vibe, the people and the food smell takes you on a journey of relaxation. The food has never disappointed us, everything is fresh and almost feels like your "abuelita" is cooking in the back as they never stop bringing the authentic -old school flavor to every single dish. ALL of the waitresses are beyond STUNNINGLY gorgeous (and they are fully clothed- versus somewhere like Hooters), and the one we had was especially nice, as well. You get a LOT of food. I mean, a LOT of food. From the appetizers to the entrees, they FEED you, and feed you well! The food is delicious, seasoned just right, and won't break your bank either. One thing: go in KNOWING that it is going to take a LONG TIME to get your delicious food. You cannot be in a hurry. It's well worth the wait, too. Also, on weekends, and at dinner, the place gets crowded and you will be waiting. When you first walk in, there is a dining area and bar. Undecided of what I wanted to eat for dinner last night, came across this restaurant & decided to give it a try with a couple of friends. The service was great, as soon as we walked in, the hostess was there with a smile, which is always pleasant to see when you walk in somewhere. We were seated very quickly, when deciding on what to eat, it came down to Bistek Empanizado & Mofongo. The food was on point, hands down! So damn good! The vibe in the restaurant was good. I am a big fan of Merengue Restaurant. When I first moved to the Boston area and was seriously craving some Dominican or Puerto Rican food, this place proved to be my saving grace. Their food is delicious, the ambiance is cool, and the staff is usually quite helpful and friendly. I also had Merengue cater at my wedding on August 1, 2009, and worked closely with Nivia Pina (the co-owner) to plan the event. She did a wonderful job and our wedding turned out great. Everyone commented that the food was great, the portions were good, the set-up looked nice, and the staff was professional and friendly. My only critique would have been that it would have been nice if they had kept the food out longer and asked us if we wanted to keep the food after the wedding (we did pay for it after all!). It's too bad this place isn't closer to Somerville so I could go more often! read more

I went here with a large group - s it was great as we were able to order alot of items to sample. We went on a week night so it wasnt very busy, which was nice - ambiance was nice and was still easy to communicate with each other across the table. The waitress was helpful, but didnt come back to our table that often. The food was delicious though, all very flavorful without feeling too heavy. We started with the sampler platter (Picadera Merengue) which was good to pick over as we waited for the entrees to come. We then got the Mofongo (i wasnt a huge fan but another member in our group said they've sampled mofongo ALL over and this place had the best). the "Ceviche de Camarones" was very refreshing tasting, and the Frituritas were good, but the Queso y Salami Frito was only so-so. My favorite dish was the sweet plaintains (Platanos Maduros). Again, it was fantastic to have such a variety of dishes, all very distinct and delicious! As for beverages, I got a "fresh" passionfruit drink - but I thought it was too sweet and didnt seem like 100% fruitjuice. Only thing i wasnt a fan of was the location - its only on-street parking off a busy road, or else you have to take a bus to get there; didnt seem like the safest neighborhood to be in either, but during the day seemed fine. read more

I was not really sure what to expect from Dominican fare but a Groupon pushed my finally try this well known institution. Very friendly staff greet you & make you feel wanted. It's very nice inside, I particularly like the unique ceiling fans. They take the time to explain any item you may have questions on. The portions are very generous & the flavors are very tasty. This was my first time & I wanted to have everything on the menu. The night that I was there a bonus treat of a one man band accompanied our meal. I'm on a ketogenic diet these days, which makes it exceedingly difficult to go out to eat. My major criterion is "Does it have steak or fish that doesn't have flour on it?" And then I'm limited to that menu item, and it had better be good. At Merengue, it's very good! I had a tender, beautifully marinated steak with a bright chimichurri sauce, peppers, and onions. It also came with a side salad and another side from a list (that included sweet plantains or tostones, fries, rice, and steamed veg) for 12 bucks. I've been to Merengue several times (I am half Puertorican and half Dominican!) considering that this is one of the few decent Dominican food restaurants I always go back, specially for dinner with friends, but in all honesty their food is nothing to die for. I wish I could say better, but their dishes are very simplistic in comparison to real Dominican food... I guess you can say that you only find real Dominican food at home, but I have tried places in NYC that manage to get a lot closer to the authentic taste of Latin cuisine. Now, If you have never tried authentic Latin food, then most likely you will love them. They do have lovely way to present food and their portions are very big! Their prices are pretty cheap and the staff is always lovely. The decor is very nice and I love when they have live music. The Pina colada is very good and so is the Mojito. I give it a 3 because I know it is not the best Dominican food out there but they are doing a hell of a job keeping the place running. My guess is that the cooks in the kitchen can cook good Dominican food, but the price vs portion and time to deliver makes them have to sacrifice flavor. read more

I came here for takeout about a week ago. I ordered over the phone at 2:45PM and asked if they could have it ready at 3:30PM, they said OK and I left my job at 3:15, I arrived EXACTLY at 3:30 thinking sweet I can walk in, grab it and jump on the highway and I won't hit any traffic. I walked in and asked for my two mofongo's with pork. She walked in the back and told them to start making my order, yeah just cause I'm white doesn't mean I don't understand Spanish, I took 13 years of it and my wife is Puerto Rican. Great now I have to wait, I waited 25 mins before I got my food. It took me forever to get home because traffic builds up like crazy. I will not come back here, the only reason I did come here was because my wife wanted to try the mofongo. Now the review on that: Dry but OK, good amount of pork until you find out half of it is chewy pork skin. It's a good thing they give you the broth or else you would choke on it. This was an interesting experience for me as are most Groupon experiences. I honestly wanted to love this place because of its authentic food and neighborhood popularity- the hallways is lined with famous visitors. My friend and I shared the Calamari with garlic and parsley sauce, the Shrimp salad, the strip steak and green plantains. The best was the strip steak and the shrimp salad- the vinaigrette wasn't too thick and tasted a little tangy. The plantains were ok but a little dry and did not come with any sauce on the side. I enjoyed the rice and salad on the side but really nothing to write home about. As for the service, I was confused. The food took upwards of 35 minutes and our waitress was mostly absent but then at the end of the meal she give us flan on the house! Maybe she was just feeling generous but gave us no reason for the free cake, either way the flan was pretty good. read more
