Unbelievable. This place has really gone to shit. There isn't a good hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I used to think Mercy was the best, but not anymore. You'll die of old age waiting for anyone to help you. Sure, they can put you in a room, there's plenty of empty tiny little rooms they can leave you in for all day and night while they ignore you and ignore your winces of pain. This the last time I go to any ER in Cedar Rapids, Iowa unless I'm unconscious or dead. At both hospitals they are very snotty and disrespectful. was told about a year back by my primary provider that she was refusing to refer me out to a GI specialist due to the fact that they were understaffed and it would "take a while", and because my issues didn't seem severe enough. that was after a 5 minute conversation (in which i described pain so severe that it is causing me to be unable to work or do much of anything!). she ended our appointment early and did nothing for me despite the fact that i was and am struggling with severe pain, discomfort, and fatigue. when i did finally get to a GI specialist at mercy, no thanks to her, i found out i have severe, chronic, and completely disabling GI issues...they proceeded to do nothing about it. this place has set back my treatment for months. don't go here if you can help it. mercy is honestly infamous for this kind of mistreatment and i knew what i was getting into - ive been dealing with medical issues my whole life and i know how to advocate for myself, and yet i still would have been better off pretty much anywhere where they actually care. read more

I arrived at Mercy Medical Center Emergency Department via ambulance earlier in October after a bad car accident. The staff was awesome. Up to four nurses were with me in their x-ray and CT scan department to help me transfer over to the scanners and take readings. Someone was with me all the time. I'm also currently using the Hall Perrine Cancer Center for ongoing treatments. All the staff there are very friendly, pleasant, and professional. Absolutely no mysteries, they will tell you exactly what's going on, what needs to be done and when they're doing it. I highly recommend this great institution. read more

1005 AM. I had lab to drop off this am. After I register I go straight to lab. Place was packed, 10 plus people. I have another appointment at 10:40. I said I don't need lab drawn, just to drop off. Was advised I need to wait for all these people ahead of me for lab drawn. Asked if I could just leave it & take care of when they have time? Nope. I have to wait for 10 plus people ahead of me for lab drawn. i advised I can't wait I have another appointment. Nope. So I had to leave & come back. Took no more than 1 minute to take my name & sample. You need someone at desk to take drop off labs. poor customer service for people who don't need lab drawn to have to wait a half hour to drop off a lab. Will not use Mercy lab again. When I went, there wasn't anyone else there. I got back to a room, and a doctor came in right away. He listened to my heart, chart, and told me someone would be right in to start an IV, etc. We waited for 45 minutes and nobody came back. So, as we walked out and suddenly, they were paying attention. One nurse said, "Come back, we have to take out your IV." Then, the other asked who I was. We couldn't believe they didn't know who we were or anything. Did I mention that the ER was still empty and no less than 29 doctors & nurses were all standing around doing absolutely nothing. read more

The ER doctors are great and go above and beyond. However; now days they think everyone has a psych problem and can't just have a bad day. They will honestly put your physical health and personal well being at risk for what the claim is the betterment of your mental health. It sure didn't feel better. The young male social worker I had I will leave his name off of here was actually showing signs of pleasure as he would give me news that was obviously disappointing. That seemed very unsettling that he was getting pleasure from my misery. He also violated my HIPPA in front of the nurses station by the refrigerator. Stating in a loud enough voice another male patient could hear and told me "I'm sorry for what you're going through". I was humiliated. When the patients have more empathy than their social workers it's not the place you want to be. I did report it to the attending physician. Of course nothing was done. I didn't care enough to make a whole case out of it since it didn't have any negative impact on me it was just rude. The social worker also has a weird odor and I dreaded going into "office" where he'd close the door in the main area. It had all windows and wasn't creepy but I will forever remember that smell everyday for 4 days, and that small cocky young man that definitely doesn't lack any self confidence. I'd have rather spent 4 days in jail honestly. Their mental health care is more like mind games that mess with you and confuse you. Everyone talks about grippy sock vacations. This was nothing of the sort. The food was decent, I've never been so bored, and drs constantly telling me I have 90 things wrong that have never been wrong before and managed to get by nicely. Be very careful how you word everything! There were 3 other people there in my situation then they were sending someone home who really needed help and to get more treatment. That system out of the health care system might be the worst! read more

Showed up here for some abdominal pains. From the moment I entered, the staff was very attentive. Yes, I had to wait a bit to get a room, but I could tell that the folks going in front of me had more serious issues. Once I got a room, the staff periodically came in to check on me. The doctor came to check me out within 15 minutes of getting into the room. At the end of the day, it was nothing serious -- but the staff treated everything seriously. Based on the level attention, thoroughness, and customer service, I highly recommend this hospital. read more

What keeps me coming back, Yelp! asks. LOL Surgeries that coincide with the approaching of old age. Anytime that I've come to Mercy over the years, I've always had great caring treatment from every member of the staff. Modern facilities, convenient location in downtown Cedar Rapids. Plenty of free parking. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, free WiFi too. :) read more

This place is terrible!!! If you want high quality medical care, stay away! Unless you don't value your life. Had a 2 1/2 day stay with 1/2 the nurses were decent doing there job as expected. The other half didn't even do vitals, rude as hell!! Seriously, a terrible place to go if you'r Sic! And the Urologist, seriously the rudest doctor I ever come across! For no good reason other than to be an arrogant ass!!! If your sick in this area, check out Luke's or the university of Iowa hospital. read more

I just had an endoscopy performed by Dr. Chapayala (spelling? ) at Mercy hospital. The nurses were golden, and I was out in 2 1/2 hours. It was a very comfortable experience. read more

I had a colonoscopy with biopsies performed 12/9/14. This is a procedure I should have been asleep for. I was not. It was the most horrific medical situation I have ever experienced. I felt everything. I was bracing myself on the cart, crying out in pain and had tears running down my face. At one point the nurse looked at my face and asked if I was ok...clearly not. As I came out of the procedure the nurse was incredibly rude to myself and to my mother. When the physician came in to speak with us afterwards he basically laughed and told me I had pain for a few seconds and was asleep. Totally arrogant beyond words. I watched the procedure on the screen. At that point I just wanted my papers and to get the hell out of there. I will NEVER go back to Mercy for anything and I used to be a huge Mercy advocate. I also happen to be an RN so I am very aware of what is normal practice and what is not. I have had a colonoscopy before at St. Lukes...it was a breeze and I came home and slept off the Versed sedative for 3-4 hours. I could have driven home from this procedure. Mercy is going down the drain as far as care goes. I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere if you need something done and I would stay away from Gastroenterologists PC, specifically Dr. Chapyala. read more
