I spent a week in Prati recently at a business convention. I found this petite organic grocery…read morestore on my way back to my hotel in the evening on the second day. The gentleman working the till noticed that I was pregnant and exhausted, and he slipped a packet of candied ginger into my shopping bag. I was surprised that a man would notice my pregnancy, surprised that he would feel sympathetic, surprised that he would know ginger helps with nausea, and surprised that he would offer such a gift. It was a generous and welcoming gesture of a kind you are far more likely to encounter in a small town than in frenetic, anonymous, and often anaesthetized Rome. The produce at La Capra Rampante is fresh, high quality, and in season. For a small store, it has a fairly large selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. A back room contains natural and organic shampoos and other hygiene and cleaning supplies. The organic dairy products are in the back of the store. There is a fairly large selection of cereals and biscuits, honey and jams, wine, fruit juices and teas. If you are staying in an apartment with a kitchen, check the refrigerated shelves that provide salads and fresh pasta. You will walk through the produce section as you enter the store, and this will be the last section you pass through on your way to the till. I appreciate such a layout because the first transit of the produce section allows me to collect the most important items on my list, and passing through on my way out means that any impulse purchases consist of fresh fruit. La Capra Rampant is the kind of grocery store that will support your resolution to eat healthier snacks and more fresh produce - it is well worth a visit.

Do you love shopping in local grocery stores? I do!…read more Pam Local was a great stop for our family on a trip to Italy. Need a drink, a snack, some pesto or pasta to bring back home, this is the place to shop. Nice to be able to pick up very local spices, small jars of jams and honey, pesto and bags of small cookies. They carry sized that are airplane compliant. Make sure to bring a bag if you have one. Or you can purchase a shopping bag there. Prices are very reasonable. A bottle of cold Pellegrino was just €.50. So refreshing on a hot summer day. Or you can fill up your water bottle at the water fountains in Rome. The water is safe to drink.

PAM Local is one of those places that's just fun to walk through when you're visiting Italy…read more It's a full grocery store, but everything feels more interesting compared to what you'd find back home -- from fresh produce and prepared foods to packaged snacks and drinks. Easy to spend time just browsing the aisles. The prices are insanely good. Local Italian wines, salami, snacks -- you can grab a lot here without spending much. I picked up a bottle of Montepulciano, some coppa, Nutella, and a few other things. Definitely stop in, fill your backpack with goodies, and you'll have snacks for your room, easy light lunches on the go, and be very happy. A great stop if you're nearby -- even just to explore and pick up a few things. You'll leave excited..
