One of the main indoor farmer's markets in Bologna, this is located on the western side of city center. Hours are 7am-midnight daily except Sundays, the fresh produce vendors open earliest around 7am, and start wrapping up mid/late afternoon, while the prepared food and restaurants open later closer to noon, and stay open later at night. Walking into the building, depending which entrance you are at, a couple salumerias are located right as you enter, carrying a selection of local cheeses, aged meats, and other traditional Italian deli items. Once inside, about a dozen fruit and vegetable vendors make up the stands set up in the middle area of the market. Bunches of asparagus, artichokes, regional tomatoes, Sicilian oranges, strawberries were in season in early April. Along the sides of the market were shops selling meat, cheese and dairy, olives/olive oil & condiments. In the side wings on both sides of the produce section were food vendors--pasta, pizza, cafe/wine bar, traditional Italian seafood, there were quite a few options here. I ended up grabbing pizza at one of the spots inside - Mozzabella Street Food. Not bad, unique toppings one with black cabbage and sausage, the other green chard and marinara sauce. The dough was crisp on the bottom and had the slight chew you want in a good crust. Not too many people on a weekday morning though closer to noon more people started coming for lunch. Bathrooms were available. The location is about a 7-8 minute walk to the central square Piazza Maggiore, and most of the main attractions in the city center. read more

I really enjoyed my time checking all the vendors inside this food vendor market. People are friendly, and most vendors speak enough English to help with ordering food or fruits, vegetables purchases. I tried cheese, cooked pastries, and breads with salsa. The bathrooms are clean and are labeled WC for water closet. Most vendors will be closed on Sundays. read more

This market is a feast for your eyes, as well as your stomach. It's on the smaller side but it really does pack a punch. The building is surrounded by places to sit and eat, while the interior has shops you can buy all the produce you'd want from (and other items of course). I appreciated that even though most of the stands inside were produce, not everyone had the exact same product so you could see different things from different stands. Everyone who worked here was friendly and helpful but not pushy and I loved that. I like to be able to just look and decide later if I want to buy some stuff or not. We saw a couple of Food Markets in Bologna and decided to stop at this one and weren't disappointed. Small to medium size Mercado with a traditional/classic feel to it. Fresh fruits, beef, cheese, Salumeria and vegetable stands in the middle surrounded by a variety of food stands and sit down restaurants. We stopped at Mozzabella and had some excellent Flat Bread. Mortadella/Mozarella and a second one with Mushrooms/Artichokes. Paired with a Goose Island IPA and a Belgian Ale. For main lunch course, we walked around given a few choices and ended up in the same section as Mozabella. Noi is a traditional spot but inside seating was full given the lunch hour. We had an amazing Al Fresco lunch. This spot is not to be missed. They do have a restroom but it is attached to one of the restaurants so good to check their closing time. It wasn't open around 3:30 on a Tuesday. All of our servers were friendly and engaged. Overall, nice Mercado for a local flavor experience! read more

A great place to get fresh produce. Been back a few times and always been lucky to end up with good tasting fruits and veggies, better than those that we pick up from the groceries. There's also several restaurants to choose from that is set up like a food court but really good quality food. We would go there throughout the year but also perfect during winter and rainy season since it's in door. read more

This is one of the markets downtown. They sell produce, meat, seafood and pretty much everything you would expect at a food market. On both sides, there are restaurants which you can eat at. There are maybe 10-15 restaurants total so you have many options. We ended up eating at one of the stalls and the food was very good. Make sure to visit this place if you are in town. I liked it because it had a very relaxed atmosphere for a market. It wasn't overly crowded or noisy/smelly. (We did go on a weekday, so not sure how it is on the weekend.) read more
