This was my first time trying the mercado after it added the Japanese influence. I liked mercado before the change, but I must say, I'm an even bigger fan now. I'm not always big on Asian-fusion but Mercado-Nikkei does it right. I love the menu style, which allows you to try many different dishes that can be shared even amongst two people. There's a large selection of different food items including various appetizers, sushi, skewers, fried rice and much more. The interior of the restaurant hasn't changed; still eccentric with pops of color and patterns. The only change was to the kitchen- if I'm not mistaken, they hired a new executive chef. It's now the perfect blend of latin american (mainly peruvian) and Japanese. The food isn't as heavy as it used to be but still has very strong flavors- a good combo of sweet, savory, spicy and sour. Service is still pretty friendly and I feel like food also comes out faster than it used to. Their complementary chips come with these crispy, quite interesting and tasty corn kernals that are incorporated into some of their other dishes too. Their short rib nigiri and ceviche were both bomb. Skewers were a little less impressive. Salad and fried rice were both solid. For dessert I got the Machu Maccha, which was essentially tres leches with a hint of maccha- it was good but I'd probably go for something else next time. Overall the change to Mercado was definitely positive, although I will miss the more authentic peruvian Mercado too. It's a great mid-range restaurant for a nice dinner date that. So if you like latin american and japanese cuisine, definitely check this place out. read more

Baja California-Cuisine in Mercado - so the title of an article I read. Two guest chefs from Mexico are joining the Mercado team until August 2nd, 2015 to create typical Mexican food for their guests. That sounds like something we have to try! Picked a day, placed a reservation online, all went smooth. Arrived there and enjoyed the early-evening quietness. Mercado is a large place, located where you could previously find Indochine. After looking through the available options, we went for the 10 course tasting menu. It featured everything from fish to meat to salad. Ready to rock! The dishes were prepared well. They looked stunning, and the staff serving us always explained what we were actually looking at. Some very interesting combinations, and some things that we didn't eat before. Each course is pretty small, so don't worry about the 10 courses. We ate through various fish themes courses, almost always combined with some spicy stuff, some very well made nacho chips and arrived at the main dishes. After 5 or so dishes, things in service started to become less smooth. First, the waiter apologized that he had swapped some course, which we didn't even notice, as honestly, we didn't have a clue anymore where we were in the 10 course. Then, as we were expecting a main dish, we were served a dessert. Another waited hissed a brisk remark to our server to move those away, as it wasn't right yet. After that, we got another main dish. We finished that, and we were asked how we liked the menu so far. All was kind of OK which we said so. Having had our eyes on the dessert, which is for us frequently, the Grande Finale, we were waiting for this. As it became apparent that this wouldn't show up without asking for it, the waiter acted really surprised about it. As a result, he didn't show up at our table then anymore, but left us to his colleagues. We finished our meal, asked for payment and left. All major credit cards accepted by the way. All in all, the feeling was kind of mixed. The food was generally good, even if some of the 10 courses weren't really our favorites. It could have been a bit tastier here and there. However, the service really causes that I've got to remove a star here: mix up of course, forgotten dessert, we've been served I think by at least 5 people, and I would suggest putting a mini version of the menu on the table for the guests to refer back to. I would really recommend to smooth out service a bit and the restaurant would get a solid 4 stars! read more

Me and my mom were visiting Vienna, and on the first day we arrived we were looking for a nice place to eat, outside in the lovely weather and with a great atmosphere. Finally after having been looking at numerous menu cards and street corners, we found this beautiful and exotic restaurant Mercado. We wanted to sit outside, but it was fully booked, though after 5 minutes a couple were finished and took off, so we could have their table. The staff was really nice, and told us we could wait in the bar, and they would clean the table. The menu card offers various dishes with an exotic twist to it - apparently some of Latin America's finest chefs were visiting the restaurant and had made a new menu card with their suggestions on dishes, but this was quite expensive. The menu card of the house was expensive too though, but my mom wasn't hungry and chose a side dish and I ordered a grilled mayan chicken with polenta, so the final cost was OK after all. My mom also ordered a glass of rosé wine (they only have 1 choice). The mayan chicken was very good, also the polenta was quite creamy. The dish was a little bit small though, or needed some more to it. 22 euros for a dish that isn't filling enough is kind of a pity, I actually had to have a sandwich another place after that, lol. But it was very good! Very well seasoned, and the meat was very tender. I will suggest you order an appetizer and 1-2 side dishes depending on how hungry you are - I was really hungry. But now to the wine - my mom ordered a glass of rosé, and this was just absolutely amazing! Wow! I will never forget that amazingly sweet and fruity rosé, just perfect taste. This was the best thing about the whole restaurant! If you love wine, and especially rosé, go to this place and have a glass - you don't have to eat something. Many people come here just to have a glass of wine on their tables outside. read more

If you're looking for top-quality latin american food, this is the place to go. I had the Croquetas as an appetizer, which were delicious and filling. As a main dish I ordered the Mayan chicken. It was perfectly cooked through, sous-vide style, very tender and juicy. You are definitely getting your money's worth in terms of food quality, I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

We went here for Vienna restaurant week. The trio of appetizers were good, the main dish of meat and potatoes was fine but uninspired. However the trio of desserts were fantastic. I'll still be thinking about the matcha cake and the coconut tapioca pudding for a long time to come. Wow! Unfortunately what keeps me from giving this a 4 star review is: 1. Food and drinks cost over 80 euros which was a bit much for dressed up street food 2. Even with spending that much money we still had to pay a 5 euro cover charge for the two of us. This drives me insane. I hate feeling like I'm being charged for the courtesy of eating in a restaurant and choosing to buy their food and drinks over someone else's. It's one thing when it's used as a substitute for a tip, but when you have to pay a cover plus tip then it's a bit much. I would consider coming back here in future for at least drinks and dessert but if there's a fee for doing that then I might pass. read more
