There are some very fine shoes that one has to patiently "break in" before they become good friends of your feet. And then there are Mephistos that seem to be your feet's BFF from the very start. It's always traumatic when I finally decide it's time to send my Mephistos off for resoling and conditioning, as it's generally four to eight weeks before I see them again. When my "new" shoes do finally arrive, it's a grand homecoming. New bottoms have been sewn on, the insoles have been replaced, the dry and worn leather has been magically transformed and NEW LACES! The sandals both developed 4 holes in the soles heels. As it turns out in the soles there are air holes under the rubber that serve some unknown function. The problem is the rubber sole is especially thin and wears out prematurely. I sent pictures and asked Resole for feedback 3 times and got no response. These junk sandals cost me about $260 with tax. I sent in a pair of Mephisto Douks to this company for refurbishment, and received a ticket confirming receipt and stating to give 4-6 weeks for the shoes to be delivered. It has now been 6+ weeks without any word from them. Emails sent to both the generic Contact Us address and to the individual who sent me the ticket inquiring about the status of the order have now gone days without a reply. Today I spent an hour on hold only to be told to leave a voicemail even though I was calling within operating hours. A completely disappointing experience, and one that ensures that if I ever get my shoes back from these people, I will not be utilizing their services ever again. read more

Sent in 3 Mephisto Helen sandals 2 months ago for their $95 for comprehensive refurbishment and paid $35 for shipping. I was disappointed with the quality control. One pair of sandals was returned after 2 months with visible black fingerprints/stains on the footbed that were not present before refurbishment. To their credit, customer service did respond and offered either to have the sandals sent back for stain removal or a $50 compensation payment. I chose the compensation option. I appreciate that they attempted to resolve the issue, but I was surprised the sandals passed inspection in that condition before being shipped back to a customer. The refurbishment workmanship itself was fine, but the QC process clearly needs improvement. It would have been about the same cost to buy a new pair. My recommendation would be to not use the service and just buy a new pair if you want to stay with the brand. read more

THE WORST OF THE WORST - STAY AWAY FROM MEPHISTO Between my wife and myself we have approximately thirty pairs of Mephisto shoes, sandals, and boots. We sent a pair of our Mephisto sandals to Mephisto for refurbishment. Mephisto advertises that Mephisto will refurbish their shoes and sandals "...to like-new condition." Mephisto's refurbishment service is one of the primary reasons for our purchasing of Mephisto footwear. We have used Mephisto to refurbish a number of pairs of our Mephisto shoes and sandals. Several months ago, we sent a pair of sandals to Mephisto for refurbishment, and Mephisto returned to sandals to us stating that they do not refurbish sandals. However, I received an email from Mephisto early this morning (04/12/2013) stating that: "This is a courtesy reminder from Mephisto Resole to remind you of the refurbishment option for your favorite shoes and sandals. All work is done by our expert craftsmen, utilizing all original Mephisto materials to rebuild your footwear to like-new condition." Given the foregoing, it appears that Mephisto has been less than honest with us. If Mephisto did not have the refurbishment service, we would not have purchased their footwear, and we certainly will never purchase any Mephisto products in the future. I don't know the best way to address this problem: the shoes themselves are wonderful and necessary for my husband who has cerebral palsy. In fact these are the only shoes that will last for him. We have a couple of pair, and they are very expensive shoes! And while i appreciate the quality of their shoes, the repair service is unbelievable. He's walking out of the only pair he has now, since we sent in for his repair 3 months ago without a 'by your leave' from them about a date in which the soles would arrive from France (since they no longer have "boomerangs" which are an older boot with gortex, that cost us over $500 back in the 1990's). Okay. We get it. The problem not only is the TIME reference of not having a pair of shoes without holes in the bottom of them, but the lack of their concern on our behalf as well. Look, I get that I should be 'thankful' they still have a backlog of soles from that time period in France available. But when I beg them to even know when the soles are coming in: "when they get here" is their response. They do NOT call the customers, you must chase your resoles down. No emails, no calls to us, no discussion. When I called today they let me know that his shoes are in for resoling now. I ask them if they got in ONE sole or several so I can send in his other pair as soon as he gets his shoes back (in 6 more weeks after waiting for 3 months for the soles to come from France for now an updated return). I don't know how to impress upon them the seriousness of the problem of my husband not having shoes at this point; it's not as if he can just go down to the corner store and just get another pair of shoes! BEWARE!!! If you send in you shoes for repair, and they no longer have the parts to repair them, they WILL trash parts of you shoe!!! I sent in a pair with the bottom of one heel loose (NOT crumbling bits for rubber that look like garbage - a WHOLE heel cap), and they threw it in the trash. Now I cannot even take it to someone to reattach. All I got was "Sorry, it was trash, there is nothing we can do." And that was from the supervisor! Thank you Mephisto Resole for making this pair of shoes USELESS with your careless disregard for my property!! They also did not send me a shipping bag for future repairs, which they always send when shipping shoes back to me. And I ordered 2 items, which they did not ship. For half the price of what new sandals would have cost me these look perfectly new. The soles and cork are completely replaced and leather straps nicely refurbished. It's almost three months and I've not seen my boots repaired yet. Their communication is nonexistent unless you happen to get them by phone. They don't answer emails and don't notify you if there is going to be a delay. I got someone on the phone today who informed me that the soles were on backorder, but "just came in today". She also said it would be two weeks to repair and a week to ship from this point. That will make four months to get a pair of shoes fixed. They only stay in business by being the official Mephisto repair facility. If they were an independent retailer they'd be out of business. read more

Mephisto quality and workmanship is not what it used to be. The lace on my 3 months old Spinnaker broke right at the top eyelet which translates to a warranty issue. While I was shipping, I included another pair for their comprehensive refurbishment, $140. 6 weeks later I receive both pair back. The shoe with the broken lace was replaced but the lace at that eyelet is a measly 4" long, what the heck? The second pair which was to be refurbished look good but now they're too small, my toes are up against the front of the shoes. I can't wear these. So, both pair go back to Mephisto. 8 weeks later I receive both pair, everything seems ok. My third pair of Spinnakers, I haven't mentioned these yet, little over a year old, very good cosmetic condition because they're rarely used, (Light Leather color), has an issue at the right heal. The shoe was squeaking while I walk, a closer look shows the rubber heal separating from the shoe. Mephisto returned these to me un-repaired because they said my warranty expired. The heals shouldn't separate at all even after 5 years. Time for me to give up Mephisto because of their workmanship and materials have taken a turn for the worse! read more

If I could put zero stars I would. They completely ruined my $400 pair of shoes. They sent them back with completely bad and cheap insoles. The material was not even anything you would find in a pair of their actual walking shoes. It's the material used in sandals!!! It's been a huge teeth pulling experience and they have provided no solution that makes any sense. I even got the retailer involved and they are even having a tough time dealing with them. So with the resole fee I'm in for over $500 and I can't even wear the things! Great shoes, but I will just replace the next pair and not cheap out. This is nothing close the quality of work that MEPHISTO is all about. If anyone else has problems with these folks, just file a dispute with your bank. They will get back your money. They did not earn their $100. I sent them my Mephisto shoes in mid-March, and got them back on April 2nd. I tried them on right away, and immediately noticed that the heal part of the new insole was pealing off. That's right, on the very first wearing, they began coming apart. I called them the next day, and got their voice mail because it was Saturday. My message was polite but firm, asking them to call me and explain what they intended to do. It has now been over two weeks, and still no phone call. If anyone there pays attention to the outside world, my ticket number is 1719545. I also put this on their Nushoe Yelp listing. WOW! WOW!! WOW!!! I just picked up my 3 pair of Mephisto sandals that were resoled. THEY ARE LIKE NEW SANDALS!! I'm so thrilled because the Sydel sandal is discontinued & they are my favorites. I had considered my bronze ones (about 10 yrs old) "throw-ways"....NOT ANYMORE!!! They look fantastic! The customer service & the wait time were exceptional!! First the positive, I love my Mephisto shoes and they did a wonderful job giving them new life. A+ for workmanship and quality. I wish I could say the same about their customer service experience. It would be unfair to the DMV to make comparisons. Their pace was glacial and communications nearly non-existent. I sent my shoes out on 11/11/19. According to USPS tracking, the shoes arrived on 11/13/19. The official Mephisto site recorded the arrival date as 11/27/19. Two weeks just to record the arrival! That alone has nothing to do with any difficulty sourcing replacement soles and clearly demonstrates a lack of customer service focus. I just received my shoes a few days ago after 3 1/2 months. I'm happy to be reunited with my favorite shoes but aghast at the customer service experience. There are lots of potential excuses for the long wait, but "not caring" seems to be somewhere on the list of explanations for what's going on here. I have an excellent local shop that couldn't repair my shoes because Mephisto doesn't make the parts available. Mephisto, either fix your operation or make parts available! Unfortunately, they're the only game in town for authentic repair so we'll just have to put up with this. So sad. read more

I sent my tan mephisto match shoes to the resole center in san diego for a basic refurbishment.. The shoes were rgone for over 3 months which was longer than expected . The resole company never advised me why the delay . I did call and they claim they were out of stock of the insole . Well got shoes late and soles were installed well HOWEVER the shoes were not shined and the color shade of each shoe was different .. I sent my Mephisto boots to Mephisto for a resole. They sent me a shipping bag (via US Postal Service) and label and I sent my boots back to them for the service. But, they said they never received them. The US Postal service does not track their bags to Mephisto; so they have no record of receiving them. So, my boots are lost. I contacted Mephisto on three different occasions, but they were of no help and did not return my e-mails. As a result, my $300+ pair of Mephisto boots are no where to be found. I would not suggest this service because of the shipping. In addition, I was disappointed in Mephisto for their lack of service. I will not be buying Mephistos in the future. read more

5 stars for workmanship, 0 stars (if that were an actual option) for customer service. I've sent shoes to Mephisto Resole twice. The first was for a warranty repair (yes, Mephisto actually offers warranty on their shoes). The upper lip of a brand-new pair of shoes was uneven, and it was cutting into my foot. The shoe was unwearable. After repair, the lip is perfectly smooth and even. The second set of shoes I sent in were my daily shoes for ~2 yrs. The shoes were badly scuffed and the soles and were completely worn. After being refurbished, the shoes look nearly brand new. The did, however, replace the insole with a thicker version that means the shoe is now less spacious. However, the insole itself is more supportive. Why the poor rating for customer service? First, you can't purchase shipping insurance when you mail in your shoes (the UPS person explained the prepackaged mailer makes purchasing insurance impossible). It's a very odd experience to send off your $400 shoes and to simply hope that they arrive safely. Second, they don't respond to e-mails.... Ever. I e-mailed them multiple times to ask for an update on my second pair of shoes (since the "Order Status" link stated that they had no record on my shipment). I don't mind that they take 6-8 wks to repair a shoe (no offense, but if you can afford to spend $300-400 on a pair of shoes, you probably have enough money to purchase a second pair of some other, cheaper brand shoe to wear while you wait for the repair). However, when I've paid $300-400 for the shoes *and* an additional $100 for refurbishment, I expect the company to answer e-mails (not even in a timely fashion, but simply to give a response AT ALL). read more

Very disappointed. It took six weeks. As soon as I wore them, the inside back heel piece of leather fell off. Worse, the lower foot of both shoes is lumpy (0on the inside) from poor installation of soles, so shoes are uncomfortable. This is the second time I've had my Mephisto Helen sandals resoled. The first time I didn't realize it would take as long as it did and I was a little disappointed by the email communication. Still the resoling was perfect. This time I have no complaints. Resoling is perfect. I am so happy to be able to resole these older sandals as the newer models use a thinner leather. Hopefully I'll be able to do this at least 1-2 more times! read more

I sent an order for refurbishment and four months later I still have not received my shoes. They will not return my e-mails and if you call the 1-800 number it just goes to voicemail and they don't return calls either. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE MEPHISTO. I understand that this is a "hand crafted shoe" and that it is not something that they can just flip over, but I would at least appreciate some contact and communication. I wear nothing but Mephisto shoes and have always been thrilled with the comfort and support of each pair I own (24). I sent a pair of very comfortable shoes to this company for resoling because I had worn them completely down. When they FINALLY sent the shoes back to me (and it takes a ridiculous amount of time), they did not feel right. They were suddenly very uncomfortable and had no absolutely no support. I cannot wear them anymore and am discarding a pair of shoes that cost hundreds of dollars. To add to the insult, despite their ridiculously long turnaround time, and their absolute and inexplicable failure to answer any e-mails or telephone calls, if God forbid you should write to them about a problem, you can be assured that they will steadfastly ignore your e-mails and you will not get any response at all. I am writing to the manufacturer in France, suggesting to them that they disassociate themselves from this California company, which is demeaning the wonderful reputation of Mephistos. I urge you not to send your favorite shoes to this fraudulent outfit - you will be disappointed and out a lot of money. I hope this business sees this review and realizes how angry I am with their incompetence and complete lack of customer service. I have had several pairs of Mephisto shoes resoled in the past and have always been satisfied. However, I recently had a pair resoled and they were returned with a different sole than was on the shoe originally. Their website says they will notify you in advance and get approval before making a switch, but that was not done in this case. I could overlook that if the sole had been the same size. Except, it was not. Now the sole sticks out around the edges more than the original and it just does not look as sleek. I have reached out to Mephisto Resole about 4 or 5 times to request a repair of this condition, but they have never responded. I can only assume they do not care and are unwilling to make things right. In any event, I am done with Mephisto Resole and will be taking my shoes to the local shoe repair merchant near my house. read more
