Kids are kind of mean and cocky, something you would see in a private school. I was bullied for not catching dodgeballs zooming past my head at 100mph. The GATE students have their own hierarchy that works mostly the same as the normal students, but it's kinda different. The whole "popular kids" thing is really messed up. No, Alex, just because you hit a ball with a stick and laugh like a monkey should not make you popular. The dean was a little mean to me, but we are on good terms now. The main school does not respect my religion and beliefs. They laughed at me for wearing a cross. If you get put into a cubby, they WILL forget about you. I don't recommend dating anyone because let's be honest-- it's all idiot teenagers in one big building. I've dated twice and both of those experiences sucked booty. The weird gay kids are treated like babies, and it creates an unfair school environment. I don't care if someone made fun of you for being gay, move on. Some good things is the electives, teachers, and lunch times, but most of it is negative. Some staff are rude, but only some. The "phone away all day" is bs because I've seen kids walking with their phones without consequences. Teachers also can be passive aggressive and only treat the popular kids like actual students as someone who has experienced that. That's really all, and if you are looking into this school, I only recommend it if you are in the GATE program.

This small public charter school is exactly what my daughter needs. There is no bullying ! The…read moreclass sizes are small and the teachers are dedicated, young , exuberant professionals. The school is new and had it's first start to finish class of seniors graduate this year. The down side is no transportation and no sports. This is not an issue for my family. Any sport or extracurricular activity your student desires is available through nearby ( Reed) or zoned Washoe County high school. I know my daughter would not be able to handle the large size at our zoned high school. The special education teacher is awesome and the administration works closely with families to address their student's needs. I would highly recommend any family check out this school because the education and environment is excellent.

This is absolutely unacceptable and racist because my daughter was the only one targeted and she is half- African American and the coaches obviously do not care about their reputation, because the constant pushing of my daughter with no repercussions. Also the school lunches here made my daughter throw up. Another teacher yelled at my daughter and her friends while they were attending a basketball game for "being without a parent" when I was right next to them. The teacher they were speaking to kicked her friends out because according to him, "I'm not their mom." This schools behavior is outrageous and I hope it eventually gets shut down. One of my daughters went to Shaw while the other goes to another school, I'm so glad I switched my daughter to the same school as the other because this is such horrible treatment, I don't know how I allowed this to happen to my daughter for so long. Even today I am terrified when the announcements sound comes over the speakers if it is at a random time. Many people at our school are aware of the stoners and vapers and they don't do anything about it. It's so bad that you can't go into certain bathrooms because those are the 'smoke spots'. As I did mention, I have had some wonderful teachers, so it just sucks that I have to complain about the teachers here as well. For this one teacher, in context (which doesn't make it much better) we talked about humanistic psychology and a criticism of it is that they are over accepting. Basically the teacher stated that "so if you ___ 4 year olds." Yeah, we all looked at each other disgusted like "Did he really say that? That's disgusting." That same teacher has also made very rude and snarky remarks to students. A very very controlling person. Some days I don't wanna go to school because I'm scared he'll make remarks about me and humiliate me in front of the class, he's already done it to me. After lunch, I think based on my experience, the upstairs bathrooms are a hit or miss because they are either locked all class period during 3rd period or open after 20 minutes. So if you really need to use it, Aunt Flo has arrived, or whatever, you're screwed until the end of the day if you're lucky enough to get to a bathroom. Honestly, if you want better education for your kids: go somewhere else. Maybe even go to Finland. Overall, can't wait to graduate because this has been a rollercoaster if the rollercoaster was barely on the track, had no seatbelts, and was on fire. Edit: Another thing, they just told us a week ago that we could be staying till 4:30pm for the exam, which would be ok, IF they told us like a month ago. So now the teacher basically said to just take that day off from work, for students who work, when it is probably too late to say anything. But the problem is, I have an off campus that day (which I worked s hard to get) and the purpose for that off campus is to help my dad because of medical issues. They literally told me I can't do anything about it so now I have to figure out 1. How to get home 2. Where to put my stuff 3. How my dad will get the help he needs.

Once you get past that though you find a great place to go to school for any 6-8 grader. The teachers are defiantly a big part of this, they really go the extra mile to prove that they care. The course work is nothing special though and smarter students may find that they are not challenged in most of their classes. Elective choices are admittedly subpar, they don't include home ec, or shop. The lunch is pretty good but nothing extraordinary for public school food. The feeling of community in this school is like nothing else I have ever experienced at any other school, staff is accommodating and students are usually well behaved unless they are ticked off. The school is very clean for a public school but again nothing special. Another thing I should probably mention is that the heating/ac unit is kind of finicky and breaks sometimes. Overall sparks is a very good middle school from the perspective of a current student of coarse.
