This is by no means a salon to visit on the regular if you want healthy hair, however it's a great salon if you are in a pinch and need your hair done fast. I am pretty disappointed by my experience they knew their card machines had went down, which I can understand but don't do a service if somebody is not on the same page it's very embarrassing to get to the register and they are not taking your form of payment at the time most people do not carry cash unless they have to. I also got burned pretty bad above my left eyebrow. My birthday is in a couple of days. I am highly irritated and upset by this I don't wear make up and I shouldn't have to just to cover up a scar that they did. No one was willing to give me a discount for my inconvenience. Way too expensive for my hair to puff right back up as soon as I go I understand how natural hair works, but that was $125 wasted and I walked out w a nasty scar two days before my birthday, horrible horrible horrible they did wash my hair pretty good though, but other than that I will not be going back. Mena's is a 24 walk in hair salon... For that I love. Mena's stylist are not one size fits all. There are many things that Mena can improve. One improvement would be to hire or have staff do detail sectional clean ups every three months or so. There were spots where dust or hair were built up in untouched areas. The other is that some staff will hold a conversation with other staff while you are in the chair as though you do not exist. I've been through a few and was unhappy with my experience. Lastly, your hair request should stay with the basics....wash, blow dry, darker dyes, deep conditioning and flat iron. Now, I go to Nadi or Hani in Matteson... They really know how to do hair. If you need your hair done, you should call to see if or when they are scheduled to return. Again, I really love the last minute and 24 hour convenience. I visited Mena's Hair Salon with a request for hair color, shampoo and style. I presented a photo with the exact color I desired and was assured that this could be accomplished. During the treatment I noticed that my hair began to turn a bright blonde and out of concern. I was told that once the dye was rinsed, the hair color would be brown color I desired. To my dismay, the final color was in fact blonde and not the brown hue I expected. I was reassured that a second attempt would result in the correct color but unfortunately, the revision resulted in bright orange roots and blotchy wine ends. The stylist requested to make a third attempt at correcting the color but knowing the potential damage that this could cause, I declined. I requested to speak to the manager regarding this and offered to pay only for a portion of the services, but not the color. This set the salon in an uproar, leading to four angry men shouting at me to pay immediately. In their attempt to pacify me, they offered to have me return another day for color correction, but only if I paid the balance immediately. Since I agreed to pay the additional money only after the correct service was accomplished, the harassment intensified. To diffuse the situation, I offered to pay an additional $10 in good faith, towards the return visit however, this lead to further escalation of the persecution. The intense verbal shouting further intensified after I requested to see the license of the stylist. Since I became incredibly threatened and began to fear for my own personal safety I sat $50 cash on the counter and walked out. Approximately 5-10 minutes later, while driving down Lincolnway Highway, I was pulled over by two police officers in separate squad cars. They informed me that a complaint had been made by the staff at Mena's Hair Salon regarding refusal to pay. After explaining the course of events, the police insisted that I return while they escort me back to the Salon. After reluctantly agreeing to return to make the payment I was surprised to see yet another squad car awaiting my return at the salon. In total humiliation I paid the balance and went on my way. Needless to say, I am completely mortified by the treatment I received on Saturday by the staff at Mena's Hair Salon. As a professional and a customer who has supported this business for numerous years, I am appalled at their lack of professionalism and attempt to have me arrested. Not only could their poor lack of judgement result in a criminal record that could have ruined my reputation, this unnecessary act could have destroyed my entire medical career and future. It is clear, that despite their breach of contract to provide a service with reasonable care and skill, their only goals were financial gain and power. In review of the myriad of complaints about this company on various social media outlets, I have noticed a common theme: unprofessional service, unlicensed workers, unsanitary work conditions, and poor hair outcome. Regardless of the complaints, no visible changes have seemed to be made. In review of this, as well as based on my own personal experience there, I am very concerned that many of the FDA rules and regulations regarding health and safety are not being followed. I am certain that this salon (and likely all eight locations) are in violation of many safety & sanitation guidelines to ensure that their clients are safe. Also, in regards to licensure, there are a myriad of employees who provide hair services without any visible credentials. This business is located in Matteson, a predominately black community. which I believe, has lead to a significant disparity in the quality of customer service that customers receive at Mena's. I haven't had my hair professionally washed in over a year. So at the last minute I decided to visit Mena. I asked for Joseph but he was on vacation, I should've turned around then. But I wanted a wash and brown rinse. I was assigned Rabie. Rabie talked me into a semi permanent color which came out blue black, YUCK. Twice I told Rabie it looks black, he swore it was brown, I thought to myself "he thinks I'm color blind". But I know black when I see it. Anybody, let alone a licensed professional could see my hair was black. I got spiral curls then I asked him to comb it out. He stated, "wait until later to comb it out, it'll last longer" Shaking my head I left this unprofessional disappointing situation paying way too much. What a waste of money!!!!! I won't be going back anytime soon. I'm now in search of a licensed professional to wash this blue black out of my hair!!! What a disappointment. I have been coming here for about 3 years when I want to wear my hair straight. I only go to Joseph. If he is not there I do not get my hair done. I have been to a few other stylists and it has not lasted as long or been as straight as when Joseph does it. And one would think because of the heat that they use my hair would be fried but it's not. It reverts back to the original curl pattern each time. They are now open 24 hours and they have redecorated the salon since moving. read more

Agree with various reviews. I went for a hair cut and style, I really wanted to like this place and support our surroundings community business, but I was disappointed. During my shampoo I asked the gentleman to loosen up on his scrubbing, it hurt so bad I asked more than once and he kept on scrubbing hard- this should have been my first sign. I too had lots of water dripping on my clothes and inside my ears. (A day later my scalp was still sore and tender from the shampooing) After the shampoo and deep conditioning I was directed to another gentleman who almost began blow drying my hair when I stopped and told him I was here for a cut and style. (I normally get my hair cut while it's wet and then styled) He said another gentleman would style and he proceeded. After the rough wash, I had a pulling match during my blow out- my head was pulled extremely hard. Once my hair had been blow dried I was directed to a third gentleman who asked how I wanted my hair styled: I mentioned for a third time that I wanted it cut. During my cut he was on the phone the whole time- I had to interrupt HIS conversation to ensure I was getting what I wanted. He almost cut bangs (which is not what I wanted) until I pulled away and explained several times that I wanted layers to shape my face. After he cut my hair He asked for the style, I requested loose curls- specifically not using the hot flat irons. He used a flat iron and my hair was basically straight. In addition during most of the time another stylist was sleeping on the couch nearby- towel over his head and sandals prompt up. I had my daughter with me and she sat on the other couch I quickly asked her to join me and when she stood up she was full of hair. I had the displeasure of frequenting Mena's in Matteson for a shampoo and style. First and foremost, I felt like a select cut of meat in the butcher shop as the stylist gazed at me inappropriately. I'm here for a shampoo, not a date. It's none of your business if I'm married, a mother or where I work. Mothers be aware if you send your teenage daughters here alone!!!! The shampoo person was rough and I left the shampoo bowl feeling battered. He had difficulty figuring out how to dry my hair. He left an abundant amount of water in my hair which subsequently dripped down my back and clothing. Needless to say, the service was subpar. I then was sent to stylist area for blow dry and style. I requested loose curls, but received the tightest curls that I've seen since the 70s...think Edith Bunker! I explained that I did not like my hair, and requested it be straightened out. The stylist Rabie, attempted to correct it but it did not meet my standards. He told me I could come back in the morning to have it redone; however, I did not have another two hours of my time to waste. Plus, I had church the next morning. I asked for a manager, and he stated he was the manager. I expressed my dissatisfaction, and he said it looks fine to me. I asked if he felt satisfied when he left his barber's chair, and if he determined how his hair looked or his barber. He failed to respond, and then states I'm giving him a hard time. There was another stylist in the shop who came over and re-curled my hair. I paid my $60, and never looked back. I will never darken their door step again. It's amazing how this change so quickly, sometimes fast but we don't notice. This place feels more and more like a meat market. I was so frustrated from my last experience of color that I just walked away and didn't write a review update. It's been quite a few months and I still get angry over the lack of respect, and not getting the exact service requested. The stylists act like they know best, even if you choose from a picture exactly what you want. I could blame it on a language barrier but I think not. Since they moved into the old Bakers Square building, now fully remodeled, I haven't gone back. I'm up searching Yelp and calling local salons in search of a good colorist and Mena's popped up...sparking my frustration and need to update this review...I left with a darker color than the honey blonde that I usually get. Once it's in there is no fix, so I waited until my hair grew out. The two stars is for the richness of the color. That has remained consistent. They do AMAZING color, but it should be the color that I choose and in an environment that does not make women feel unsettled. NEVER GOING BACK. I've never made an appointment and I'm not sure that they take them. The hours open are 7am to 7pm most days, including Sunday, which I like most. There are several stylists, most are male. I've only seen one female, but I'm not partial to male or female stylists as long as they do a good job. The shampoo person has been excellent every time, not afraid to scratch an itchy scalp and does great scalp and neck massages (always causes me to give a tip). Overall, the staff is polite and friendly; the bathrooms are always clean and they have comfy wait areas (sofas lined along the wall and positioned to see the styles of others underway). I usually come for the color then twist or braid my own hair at home. They do not braid but every now and then I let them blue dry my hair and flat iron it. I don't like the excessive heat bit it has always looked great when done. They also give recommendations but without pressure. Sometimes I'm prepared and get the deep conditioner and every time my hair moisture lasts longer than without, definitely a good investment for healthy hair. read more

Thanks Hani for doing a good job with my hair. Everyone was very nice and pleasant. Hani was patient and listened to my requests, just wish he had based my hair a little before applying the perm. They took me in right at closing time, he worked fast and got me out in less than 3 hours. I liked that he did all the work. I should have avoided this place like the plague. The only reason why I gave it a single star is because the sylist was nice. The biggest issue is that my hair is damaged now and my four week old hair color, which was supposed to be permanent dye, is practically non-existent. I may end up having to cut my hair off and start all over at this point as my hair was at my armpit! I arrived there after my workout that morning and was assigned a stylist. He asked what I wanted and suggested color to conceal the grey hair. I wanted color, but I didn't think that it would be botched like this! The color was stinging my scalp, the shampoo guy had gotten water all down my shirt as he was trying to rinse the hair in the nape area during the shampoo process, then there were four different people blow drying my hair!! It was like I was playing musical chairs in that place. The stylist, rabie, cut my hair, curled it only at the ends, which mean it had no volume, and then I noticed that they left side of my hair was uneven. My hair is uneven all over my head now... Do you know how irritating that is to have uneven hair? Every time that I've shampooed my hair over the last four weeks, the water is tinged with red hair color solution. It's so hard to manage as well. I've deep conditioned it, put a protein treatment on their, clarified at every wash, it's a mess!! This was my gift to myself on Christmas day and I wish that I had kept my money and did my hair myself or just waited and went to my regular stylist!! What a waste of $100 dollars and time!! I can almost guarantee that I'll be chopping several inches off of my hair within the next month or so because having straight ends and curly roots is not good for business!! I can't really hide it unless I try tucking the ends under when I put the twisted hair in a bun. I'm so angry at myself because I vowed to never go back to them after and salons like theirs years ago! P.S. I almost forgot to mention that the salon was very nasty!! There were huge flies flying all around the place and they had to have been hanging around since the spring of '15!! The shampoo guy was spraying bug spray where the flies were, which was right by the steamer. Mind you, I was underneath the steamer at the time and I had to cover my face to prevent breathing that crap in! Luckily for me, the manager told him to stop spraying. That should've been my first cue to leave this place!! Never again will I allow these blow dry bar people to touch my daggone hair, Egyptian, Brazilian, anyone or any place who places too much emphasis on having straight hair can kick rocks!!! read more

I got a good shampoo, blow-dry and curl from here as a walk-in. For a quick simple style on a Friday without an appointment (on a holiday weekend), you can't really beat it. I was in and out in about an hour with below shoulder length natural hair. Since I have curly hair, it has to be combed through before blow drying and my stylist had a bit of a time doing so. But, he was a nice guy (as were all of the guys), and I would return in a pinch. read more

I agree with another user, I don't think these men are licensed. I did not see a license hanging above my stylists' work station. I WILL be investigating this further. I do not think it's okay to pay salon prices to stylists who are not even certified! They also pressure you to pay with cash. I should've drove away when I saw it used to be a restaurant and they STILL have chairs stacked in the back of the establishment. But I went against my better judgment. They pressured me into getting a deep conditioner to the point that I felt like they wouldn't do my hair had I not agreed. They kept insisting "You REALLY need a deep condition." The shampoo guy was rough and they had towels just dumped in a basket. Who even knows if they were clean. As for the stylist........where to begin...... If anyone really knows anything about hair care, they'd know that the way they blow dry is terrible for your hair. They use those brushes with all the little bristles (the hard kind that your mom used to put your hair into a ponytail) and they do this weird brushing technique seems even more damaging. Not to mention, the brushes probably have everyone's hair who ever came there in them. NASTY! While flat ironing, (with $20 John Frieda flat irons) he put grease on every strand. My hair was a greasy mess when I left. Everyone who leaves the shop has the same feathered hair style. Making young girls look 45. This place is a disaster! My first experience with them was great. They did my daughter's hair for prom. We were in and out in a reasonable time and the style lasted almost 2 weeks. I honestly thought, "now they have a customer for life". Sadly, my most recent experience was a complete disaster. So this time, my daughter needed her hair done for Homecoming. I called and spoke to who I thought was the person that did my daughter's hair previously. An appointment was made for 6am on a Saturday. My goal was to be in and out so that my daughter could go to her Saturday music classes and I could go to the gym and get a workout in before my afternoon appointments. At least, that was the plan. This location is 45 minutes away from where we live. So we left the house at zero dark thirty in order to make the 6am appointment. Arrived 5 minutes to 6 and were no other customers in the salon. I was then told that the stylist I made the appointment with didn't come in until 8am. I explain that I spoke with him directly and that the time was confirmed. Didn't matter, he wasn't coming in until 8am. They offered to have another person do her hair. Reluctantly, I agreed. Long story short, in the 3 hours that elapsed, my daughter was shuffled between 3 different people to wash, blow dry and straighten her hair. None of them actually finishing her hair. They would start part of the service and stop once their regular clients showed up. I watched 3 customers come in after us and leave before us. What they essentially did was have each person work on her a little until the person I originally made the appointment with showed up. I continued to question what was going on after the first switch and then again after the second switch. By the third switch, I thought this person would finish but he didn't . My plans for the rest of the day were ruined and her hair style didn't even last one day. NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

I was horrified at the violent and disresptful behavior of Rabi towards my stylist displayed in front of myself and other clients. He began to yell and pulled her station from the wall then detached her equipment and threw it out into the parking lot. The worst part was that he stood so close in front of her that we thought he was going to hit her. This was all done I found because this stylist informed her client of a $25 dollar additional charge if they took her braids down before washing. I have never witnessed such unprofessional behavior at any establishment and I left with several others without getting my hair done. I will never return for any service!!! read more

I took my daughter to Mena's today to get her hair dyed red and I also wanted mines dyed a blondish color. I showed them pictures of the colors we both wanted and they assured us they could do it....the first time they colored my daughters hair it came out a dark color, not red so they tried again, it was orange after that so they put a red rinse on it that "didn't take" so they colored it a 4th time which was when I was told they didn't have the color she wanted, I was told her hair had to be bleached first but they don't use bleach. My daughter left with copper colored hair. My hair came out 3-4 different shades, super blonde throughout my roots, a mild brown tone, a light brown tone and a dark brown tone. My daughter's Nike t-shirt was faded/bleached/ruined around the neck and more than half way down her back, my shirt was bleached a little in the back but I didn't see it until I got home. They offered no discount or resolution for my troubles until I told them I wasn't paying and they had to pay for her shirt. They took $35 off my bill to compensate for her shirt and told me I can go to their other location and get our hair redone the right way. I was advised by Joseph to go on a day that's not busy if I want it so ne the right way so they'll have time to do it right......I couldn't believe he told me that. And during my visit stylist Rabie was very rude and unprofessional with me, he argued with me about how my hair turned out and told me he did the best he could do and told me he wasn't fixing it. The results of my hair are not that if any professional and the way my daughter and I were treated was rediculous. They said my daughter's hair wasn't bad, if you go to a salon for a particular color and don't get it after 4 tries the proper thing to do would be not to charge that person because you didnt make good on what you guaranteed you could do. Ugh! Do not go here! Really bad experience yesterday. I got tossed around to different people & the whole exerience was AWFUL! I developed a hair dye allergy 3 years ago after dying my hair since the age of 22 due to pre-mature graying. I'm allergic to the PPD in hair dye (ladies watch out! It's a carcinogen & banned in other countries!). So I brought my own hair dye that still contains an ingredient related to PPD... still get a lil reaction (itching) but it's worth it for me getting rid of the gray. Got sent to 1 guy, then tossed to another that applied it very sloppily, then preceded to work on 3, YES 3 OTHER HEADS, while a deposit only hair dye smothered my neck, forehead, & scalp for an entire hour! He just left me sitting there!! Then I got tossed to someone else that threw some half baked curls in my hair & ask me "you like it"?? So miserable... I'm a BIG tipper but they would never know that with how HORRIBLE they are. Still tipped tho... read more
