Bummer. I always see memes about Midwesterners and their love for Menards. I wish I felt the itch to dance whenever I hear the Menards jingle but their customer service leaves much to be desired. If you aren't familiar with this MEGASTORE, imagine that Walmart and Home Depot/Lowes had a baby together- the result would be Menards. This store sells everything from light fixtures to auto repair parts, food to kids toys, outdoor gardening supplies and indoor furniture. Frankly, I wonder what they don't supply at Menards. The variety of products is supreme! Sadly, the customer service is amiss. On more than one occasion, I've asked an employee for guidance to a specific product. Employees will happily tell you the assumed aisle but I haven't ever had an employee walk me to the item of inquiry. I'm not a lazy customer but their aisles are massive and checked full of products. Finding tape or a pulley feels akin to looking for a needle in a haystack at Menards. If the staff were more customer service oriented, I might meander through Menards more often. Unfortunately, I don't usually have 30-45 minutes to walk around a store looking for one item. For these two reasons, I'll only go to Menards when I cannot get what I need elsewhere. read more

Menards = where you leave with way more than you intended. I love this location. Friendly staff who we've had to utilize a couple of times, and a really good variety of whatever it is you might be looking for. For me, it was spray paint. I always checkout the cleaning supplies, grocery and seasonal areas, too. Menards has great prices on grocery items and other items you may no initially think to look for here. Not the absolute worst, but close. The staff is dismissive or ignoring, and the prices seem to keep going up. If you're looking at the live flowers, definitely worth it to head towards Kalona and stop at the Amish family business on the left hand side of highway 1. Before DVR... when I actually watched commercials... the slogan 'Save BIG MONEY AT MENARDS' would frequent my childhood telly. I'd find myself singing along and even as I typed it just now, I did so with the tune in mind. When I think of Menards. Two things come to mind (beside the slogan). One-stop shop. Mail-in rebates. They seem to have everything. Random groceries... tools... materials... decor... appliances... flooring... rentals... lawn care... lighting... I mean, everything. It's hard to leave with only what you came for. You always walk out with a few other treasures you found along the way. Menards lends well to people who have the time, patience and memory to mail in rebates. They seem to offer a lot of them. I however, am not someone who possess many of the things listed above. But, I am mighty frugal and therefore have done a rebate or two. The process is relatively painless. This location isn't super convenient. Even with me living on that side of town, it always seems out of my way to go there. I also have never had a fabulous customer service experience at this Menards. While I have no BAD experience to speak of-- I feel like at similar stores I always have someone to talk to. An employee that goes out of there way to ensure I am finding what I need. (Which most of the time I am not, I am lost and seeking direction!) Menards has about a dozen stores that are located in the Midwest-- if you're a homeowner and have a project, stop in! Lovely place to grab a whatever assortment of whatever you need! I love that I can grab a 2x4, gardening supplies, some dish soap and a case of diet mountain dew if my heart so desires. Very friendly folks that seem to enjoy helping you out and throughout the year they have plenty of 11% back specials or x% off whatever you can fit in a Menard bag. Everything comes back on a gift card, but you can usually find something to spend it on! read more

I bought a couch from this store. The store is beautiful with great customer service. We paid for the couch to be delivered to my daughters apartment. It was not an easy delivery, but they busted the drywall, ripped and stained the couch and neither Menards or the movers want to take responsibility. I called the store and the rude lady told me I hired the movers, not Menards. Then she gave me the number of the movers. I called them and it was the poor delivery guy and not a company. I told him about the issues and then it was suddenly a "I should have refused the delivery" and "when you do something nice it bites you in the ass". I'm sorry. You were hired to do a job and I paid you and I bought the couch. Menards didn't care that their subcontractor caused damage and the delivery guy was the victim. What the heck? Does no one care about how they represent their business? So disappointing. I am not happy. Now we are the proud o nets of a great upped and stained couch and we need to repair the drywall. Oh lordie. This is where customer service goes to get stabbed in the heart. We recently bought a house that we're flipping and my dad is a genius when it comes to plumbing, electrical, and general craftsmanship so he's been in town teaching us some tricks of the trade. I've never been a huge fan of Menards and only go there when my more preferred hardware store doesn't have the right item or when I need something that doesn't need to be fancy (ie. drywall and lumber... savin' my pennies where it doesn't hurt). Recently looking for a thin sealant to smooth out an uneven cement job in the basement floor, we started with the paint department thinking they'd be our best bet for something so thin. The man we talked to mumbled and was barely audible to even me, so my dad politely told him that he's hard of hearing and asked if the man would please speak up. To this, the man was condescending and rude. It was the kind of passive aggressiveness that can't get you fired but certainly makes everyone around them feel awful. I ended up getting so fed up with how he was treating my dad that I jumped in, ended the conversation, and we walked over to the lumber department where the more down-to-earth folks were. The product we were looking for was in our hands right away. When I asked the lumber guys if the guy in the paint department is always like that, they rolled their eyes and said, "oh, yeah." So it's known that someone who's condescending and passive aggressive is working there, yet no one does anything about it? Frustrating. **Update: a fellow Yelper brought to my attention that it sounds as though I've given a two star rating due to a single employee despite every other employee being great, and I'm thankful that he did because upon re-reading my review, I see what he means. So let me clarify: I've received poor customer service on multiple occasions. When looking for a belt sander replacement belt, I was told to look on the other side of the store. When looking for a rubber union to join a waste pipe to pvc pipe, I was told they didn't carry that... yet I found it myself and bought it. Oh, Menards, why must you suck so bad when Home Depot is so far away in Cedar Rapids? Why must you be the kind of store that I simply can't stand to shop in? Why must your salespeople be so devoid of any idea of what constitutes good customer service? I have kept trying to embrace this store, but they constantly poop on me. How can you possibly support a store like that? This last time, I needed to buy 18 bags of pea gravel. Since I drive a little Fiat, I knew that I would only be able to buy 6 bags at a time. So I walked into the store, grab a flat cart and head back to the lawn and garden section. I ask a Menards guy where the pea gravel is because I need 6 bags. Now, keep in mind that each bag is 50 lbs. The dude just points to the section where the pea gravel is and dips. Yes, I said dips. No offer to help load them on the flat cart, no offer to help take them to the front...nothing...just point and scoot. I load them all on the cart and start laboriously pulling the cart to the front. Slow going. In no time, I'm sweating like a hog in heat, but damned if not a single one of the Menards employees who SEE me dragging this heavy cart even offer to help. WTF! Sadly, I had to return for another load, and damned if it wasn't a repeat of the first. I didn't bother to return for the final set of 6 bags. I decided to make the trip to Cedar Rapids. No more Menards for me. I deserve better. We all do! read more

This rating is only for the Christmas tree sales in the outdoor garden area. We have gotten our tree at Menards in Iowa City for at least 12 years, maybe 15. Every year the experience has gotten less enjoyable. There used to be many unwrapped trees, now there are almost none. Nobody wants to drop $100 for a Frasier fir and go on a hope and a prayer that is will look good after it is unwrapped at home. For a year or two, putting the unwrapped tree thru a bundler was an option for easy transport. There also used to be a checkout person in that area so you didn't have to cart your greenery and a 10 foot tree thru the store potentially running into a kid or elderly person going around the corner. Also have droppings from the tree making for slick walking inside the store. There has not been a checkout there for probably 7 -10 years. So maddening!! This year (I realize help is hard to come by) the guys (college or high school kids) were being taught on our tree how to use the saw to cut the bottom of tree off. Dangerous for everyone. Anyone that asks about where we get our tree - I tell them the selection is generally good but only if you are willing to play the lottery on what your tree will look like. We stood in line at the cashier for about 15 minutes because the machine that takes checks didn't work. We paid by credit card thinking this would take care of their problem. Nope! We waited another 8-10 minutes for someone to bring our receipt. No apology, sorry for the wait. Just nothing. We asked for a credit for our long wait because of their mechanical problem. They said we don't do that. This customer will be telling everyone not to shop at this Menards. One would think they would treat their customers better. This Menards location has everything you need for house and home, even food. It's only been open for a few years so it's still clean and organized. Large garden section in season and Black Friday madness well organized. Staff is friendly with some longtime employees very knowledgeable in their areas. Parking lot can be a little cramped and difficult to navigate, especially if you have a trailer. Location close to the highway interchange is a plus. This Menard's will provide an excellent experience. read more

Excellent customer service. We stopped in to look at window well covers for an odd-shipped window well. The store is large with a wide variety of home needs - a plus - but it can be a bit intimidating when you first enter. Upon asking an employee (Marty) to help direct us to where they were, he immediately stopped what he was doing on a shelf and walked as to the section. From there, he answered questions, researched options for us, and printed out info on a piece we were contemplating buying. The customer service was excellent. We ordered a vanity from Menards which indicated a delivery date of May 27th. On June 1st, I called the store manager, who could said the package is being delivered by FedEx, but could not locate where the package was. I had to do my own digging to find out it was CEVA Logistics and not FedEx. The nightmare began when I called CEVA. Very rude employees, didn't seem to care for their customers, and transferred my calls 5 times. Was told they can't track my shipment and will need to get back to me. We requested Menards to cancel our order since no one could located it. The store manager (as he claimed) would not cancel the order, and basically told me we had to wait. Meanwhile no one could figure out what's going on. Never ordering anything from Menards, especially if they are going to use CEVA. read more

I've wasted countless trips here only to find that they don't have what I need, or have run out. It makes it especially irritating when it is something very basic like standard 1/4" bolts. Do yourself a favor and drive the few extra miles to Lowes. Menards suffers from a Napoleon complex. It wants to be a big awesome store, but the old saying that it rolls downhill starts at the top. It has been explained that the owner wants a deep discount on products, much like Walmart receives. The problem? Menards doesn't move enough product to be in that league. Stay in your pay grade Menards. This store sold me flooring that was being discontinued and said nothing about it. Finding anyone to help can take more time than it's worth. They also charge more for lower quality products. Just walk in and be amazed at all the off brand tools you've never seen or heard of (for good reason). In a pinch they will do, but I mostly stay away. Oh, and the 11% rebate that they offer is only good for in-store credit. That's not a rebate, that's a trap. read more

I ordered custom counter tops from Menards which were cut incorrectly. When my installers came to put them in they let me know immediately they were wrong. I called immediately and was told curtly to call back on Monday as no manager was available. Fortunately I had good carpenters who solved the problem for me, however it took another hour of their time and we all know time is money. The solution which came from Menards was "Are they installed? All we could do is reorder them for you, which would mean uninstall and pay to have another one reinstalled". I was NOT told this the first time I called, only to call back when a manager was available. They also told me they could not make a price adjustment, that would have to come from corporate headquarters. Bottom line,,,I would not go back to buy a toilet seat from Menards. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT purchase appliances from this store. Bad customer service, flippant store management, and inept delivery/installation. All I can say is wow, this has been the worst purchase experience I've ever had. Not only did the sales person not sell me all the items need to install my washer/dryer (thus requiring extra trips out to the store), but the dryer was delivered without an owner's manual, the dryer was not installed upon delivery, neither the washer or dryer were balanced (so that they would work properly), AND my washer (and wall) was damaged upon installation! After all this, the store manager refused to offer any sort of discount for the damage and inconvenience, and instead blew me off by giving me the phone number for corporate headquarters (which is only a recording). read more
