Was visiting the Philippines for the holidays I went here to get my haircut they did an amazing job…read moreeven offered me a drink compared to Price's home it was 1/3 of the Price and didn't even better job. I stumbled across Felipe and Sons while scrolling through Instagram and I really liked their aesthetic. Their setup in Ortigas is the real deal. Hardwood floors, old-school chairs, full-bar and floor-to-ceiling mirrors. While waiting for my appointment on the dark leather couch, I felt as though I was on a scene of Mad Men or something. Now for the cut. I was a bit apprehensive because the barber that scooped me up wasn't conversastional, like at all. I got a nice hot towel to start though and then he got to work after I explained what I wanted. Luckily my fears were unfounded! What takes 25 minutes at some other salons and barbershops took him nearly an hour--and that's a good thing. This barber (it's a shame I didn't catch his name), took the time to really give me a good fade, thin out my top, and even did a sick job on my sides. You could tell that he had a really, really skilled manner in the way he manipulated the clippers and scissors. I got a shampoo and another hot towel after. Awesome! The arm and neck massage was also super relaxing. He even gave me some good tips about what kind of pomade to use for my cut and how he'd work with what the other barber did wrong apparently from when I got a cut from somewhere else. Definitely worth a try if you're looking for a new place to get a haircut. For only 280 pesos the quality of the cut was amazing. I already scheduled my next haircut.

Talas Manileño is one of the new breed of retro-hip barbershops emerging in Metro Manila, catering to men who want to add that little extra oomph to their everyday style. Talas' signature service is the "Manileño" which includes so much pampering for its price tag: haircut, shampoo, massage and a complementary drink (including coffee, whiskeys and local craft beers like the delicious Katipunan Craft Indio Pale Ale). Last time I went there I had their Manileño and a beard trim and went home a happy and dapper customer. This place reminds me of Makati's Felipe and Sons minus all of that place's bells and whistles. There is no haberdashery to be found here, just good old fashioned haircuts. And for that reason I think I kind of prefer this place. The interiors just have that extra little bit of style (Retro cool on the bottom floor, even more old school upstairs). Barbers that go the extra mile for their guests. Music that plays from a Crosley vinyl record player. All these little details that make the whole experience so much better.

Great service from Raymond! On my last night in the Philippines, I decided to get another haircut,…read moreand a beard trim. I learned my lesson, and I asked this time how much the service was. Glad I did because not only did I get a great haircut, and beard trim. I also received a fantastic price! 300 PHP, Unlike Bruno's Barber who charged me 9,230 PHP which was a total a rip-off. I'm still quite bitter about it. I think the barber at the other place took advantage of me because I was a tourist. Oh well, we live and learn. I hope people learn from my mistake. Ask for the price list first!

I was just passing by this place near university mall next to my school, and I thought, "Only takes…read more10 minutes? Why not get a haircut?" There was no line, so I just ordered up my haircut through this cool computer device thing and got a regular, boy-next-door style clean cut with sorta thin but not undercut level thin sides. In no time at all, a barber came up to me and was ready to give me a haircut. I decided to time it just to make sure it was 10 minutes. It wasn't EXACTLY 10 minutes, of course, but needless to say it was pretty damn fast. The guy worked his magic like hell, I didn't know how he was cutting so fast. But in the blink of an eye, I had my haircut ready and done. And it didn't look half-bad either; it looked pretty much the same as all the other haircuts I normally get. Considering that price-wise, it's pretty much the same as the haircuts I get from other places, I'd say that the quickness and convenience factor here (the fact that you can get a haircut during your lunch break or something) gives it a decent edge.

I owe every beautiful haircut to Bench Fix…read more Whenever my hair's drying out because of the intense heat and ever moody weather, I would rush to Bench Fix, an hour earlier (because you have to be scheduled for a service since they have a great number of customers per day). And never did they fail to achieve what I tell them how I like my hair cut. Remember those salons in which a trim (approximately 1-1.5 inches), becomes a ten-inch cut? And you'll go home, frustrated, because they nearly cut all of your hair off? Well, Bench Fix won't get you that kind of service. Using great Bench products, they'll be sure to provide great haircuts and a smooth-touching hair because of their fragrant shampoos and conditioners. The staff is also kind and accommodating, accompanied by their comfy chairs and overall interior.

Imagine - I have to sit down and deal with a dude (or dudette) cutting my hair for hours (depending on what I need them to do). And sometimes they talk to me! Ugh. What do I even say? Also, one of the main things that scare me about haircuts is the irrational (or, sometimes, very rational) regret that follows. Thank the gods I don't have to worry about that with Bench Fix. It's like they exist especially for people like me. One, I can choose which stylist I want to deal with, so I can opt for the one I think I'll be most comfortable with. Two, the stylists are trained well, and are very professional. They will not talk to you unless you talk to them first. And three, they are all amazing. I can be all decent and/or edgy in a flash.

Slick Barbers Co. - The boys at work

Ever since one of the Slick Barbers (Tim) gave me my first high fade, I have only ever had my hair…read morecut by one of the boys of Slick Barbers Co. which is a barbering collective born out of a desire to bring back the highly cultivated culture of fostering a good relationship between barber and client. In the olden days, haircuts needed a lot of meticulous feathering and trimming without the aid of clippers, and great barbershop conversation was the norm. The boys of SBCo. are trying to bring that back, and personally, I have a great time every time I'm in this humble Yague barber shop because of the fun people, the great music, and just overall the great philosophy that these boys embrace. SBCo is a tad rebellious. They are at par with other more established barbershops in terms of quality, but they are cheaper because of their known brand of "street" barbering. No fancy air-conditioned surroundings or plush lounges here. You come for a trim, you hang out, you walk out happy. Cuts are at around P200 pesos excluding tips. Their waiting list suggests that a lot of people are rearing to get haircuts. Sure, the guys over at Salcedo can give similarly spiffy and cool haircuts but not for the price that SBCo offers. It's all a matter of preference, really. What I also love about SBCo. is that they have contacts and tie-ups with major local pomade brewers, so if you are always in need of a good hair product, you can choose from their shop for the most suitable pomade for your styling needs.
