When we're out at the mall, and their itching to have their hair cut, I always hope we get to do it as quick as we can without compromising their vanity. So we often go for HQ Barbershop in SM North Annex. PROS: HQ offers quick and straightforward service for those just needing a trim or looking to trade their longer locks for a shorter and ready-to-wear everyday mode; There's no cashier. You can directly pay at this machine where you press a couple of buttons on the touchscreen and then slide your bills in like a vending machine; The place is impeccably clean and simple; A new haircut in 10 minutes! But that doesn't include wait time, of course. They tend to have a queue during weekend afternoons. CONS: This barbershop is nothing fancy. You may get some styles that you want like if you prefer an undercut or a shave, but this won't make you look red-carpet ready; Of course, 200 pesos isn't too expensive for a decent cut, but consider that a lot of barbershops at the kanto offer gupit-binata for just 30 pesos TL;DR: Cheap for a mall barbershop that gives clean, decent, and quick service.

HQ Barbershop offers the typical haircut for men but what I like about them is the vacuum that goes after your haircut. It is always a problem for me especially the short hairs that are stuck in your clothes, neck, face and loose cut hairs in your scalp. Their vacuum feature answers that. Another first for me is that they also have an automated paying machine. They don't have a cashier so you just click the service you availed and insert the bills. Plus, their haircut is lower compared to other known barbershops. Though it may be limited to simpler less fancy hairstyles but it's okay for me. You get a clean haircut for P200 only. So if you are in a hurry and want that clean feel after your haircut, HQ Barbershop is perfect for you!

I stumbled across Felipe and Sons while scrolling through Instagram and I really liked their aesthetic. Their setup in Ortigas is the real deal. Hardwood floors, old-school chairs, full-bar and floor-to-ceiling mirrors. While waiting for my appointment on the dark leather couch, I felt as though I was on a scene of Mad Men or something. Now for the cut. I was a bit apprehensive because the barber that scooped me up wasn't conversastional, like at all. I got a nice hot towel to start though and then he got to work after I explained what I wanted. Luckily my fears were unfounded! What takes 25 minutes at some other salons and barbershops took him nearly an hour--and that's a good thing. This barber (it's a shame I didn't catch his name), took the time to really give me a good fade, thin out my top, and even did a sick job on my sides. You could tell that he had a really, really skilled manner in the way he manipulated the clippers and scissors. I got a shampoo and another hot towel after. Awesome! The arm and neck massage was also super relaxing. He even gave me some good tips about what kind of pomade to use for my cut and how he'd work with what the other barber did wrong apparently from when I got a cut from somewhere else. Definitely worth a try if you're looking for a new place to get a haircut. For only 280 pesos the quality of the cut was amazing. I already scheduled my next haircut.

As convenient as this place is location-wise, there are times where it's been a hit or a miss for me. There was one haircut where they got everything right from the style to the length to how I wanted my bangs to go. Yet there was another time where it didn't look as good as the last time. Doubtless Bench Fix does know what it's doing. Maybe it was just who attended to me that day but 9 out of 10 times, they do get it right. The staff is polite and they do tell you when to come back for your appointment. The hairstylists are willing to listen to your suggestions and do ask for your feedback while they cut so they know exactly what to do. They won't push anything unnecessary on you and do just what seems necessary to make sure you walk away satisfied and that your hair still looks good days after you've had it done which is probably one of the most important things when picking a hairstyle.

Talas Manileño is one of the new breed of retro-hip barbershops emerging in Metro Manila, catering to men who want to add that little extra oomph to their everyday style. Talas' signature service is the "Manileño" which includes so much pampering for its price tag: haircut, shampoo, massage and a complementary drink (including coffee, whiskeys and local craft beers like the delicious Katipunan Craft Indio Pale Ale). Last time I went there I had their Manileño and a beard trim and went home a happy and dapper customer. This place reminds me of Makati's Felipe and Sons minus all of that place's bells and whistles. There is no haberdashery to be found here, just good old fashioned haircuts. And for that reason I think I kind of prefer this place. The interiors just have that extra little bit of style (Retro cool on the bottom floor, even more old school upstairs). Barbers that go the extra mile for their guests. Music that plays from a Crosley vinyl record player. All these little details that make the whole experience so much better.
