Dropped in while in the area and this place was a refreshing, welcoming spot! The folks are nice and make you feel right at home. Food was ready in no time! I got the TBS (turkey bacon Swiss) and hubs got the Reuben, which he said was great. Now Melton's is in his top 3 spots to order a Reuben. We split some fruit as a side and had sweet teas. Really friendly employees. We ordered three different sandwiches and all three were good. I liked the Reuben that my daughter ordered. They have regular pimento cheese and a spicier version as well that we got a sample of. They were both good, we ended up buying a pound of the spicier one to take home. My favorite sandwich shop! The sandwich combinations are on point and customer service is fantastic. They offer hot and cold sandwich with some homemade (like meatloaf) ingredients. Some additional sandwich topping would be nice, but they have the standard options. They don't always have the same sandwich-salad selections (meaning chicken, tuna, egg, and sometimes seafood and country ham salad-LOVE the country ham salad). They also offer a variety of soups daily. It can be pretty crowded and have a longer line at lunchtime but they move the line pretty quickly. I wish they were open past 3 PM. read more

On my visit, I ordered a Reuben, they heated the meat, kraut and cheese in a microwave and used a toaster on the bread. Never thought to look for a grill or Panini before I ordered. We stopped in on a whim (and after checking Yelp!) and had a terrific lunch. There were six of us, we all had a different sandwich and everybody loved it. And we got a free cookie because it was our first time there. I had the Big Mama's Club sub and it was excellent. Too often, a sub roll is thick and way too stiff and interferes with your enjoyment of the other ingredients. Not so the Big Mama. The roll was fresh, soft and tasty and let the excellent ham, turkey, two cheeses etc. come through with full force. This is an unassuming spot in a former service station building. the prices are ridiculously high. Also the kitchen staff does not wear gloves while handling your food. When they are assembling sandwiches they are touching all ingredients with bare hands. the breads are not Artisan at all but just plain old Lowe's off the shelf. I have lived in Danville for ten years, and Melton's has always been a favorite of mine and my family's. Our only complaint is that they're only open for lunch! The staff is friendly (to the point that they often ask how my parents are doing--they sometimes visit from California and always make a point to stop in for lunch when in town). I have NEVER seen any unclean practices in this restaurant, and they always score very high in their health inspections, which they display proudly for everyone to see. Yes, they do reheat some of their meats in a microwave because, like many delis, they do not have a full kitchen. And no, they do not have artisan bread...because this kind of bread cannot be found anywhere in Danville. But I can recommend my favorite sandwiches: the Big Daddy Club, the Hot Mammy, and the Adam's Apple (a non-menu sandwich that can be had if they have an apple on hand). And if you go in more than once, you're bound to be greeted as a friend on the second visit! read more

I have to rescue this place from the two previous reviews. Some points are valid - the hot sandwiches are cooked in the microwave and the sandwich bread is not artisan quality. But, what you get is a decent sandwich lunch for two for under $15. Ingrediants were fresh, service was friendly and sanitation was adequate. Based on the other reviews I ordered a cold-cut roast beef sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. I had a Reuben ($4.97) corn beef, melted Swiss cheese, rye bread and 1,000 Island dressing. I was disappointed. The bread appeared to have been purchased at Wal-Mart and came with no garnish or pickle.
