Chris in the ski area was helpful sharing his knowledge of skin classic skiis, NNN bindings for skate skiing & fishing boat options (kayak vs canoe). My friend recently got her ski Boots stretched which is a service that is hard to find. They also waxed our skiis at a reasonable cost along with superior quality. What's with Mel's customer service?! My husband has been into Mel's twice looking for a mountain E-bike and both times the salesman who helped was not at all helpful. Both guys--one on the main floor in the bike section and the other downstairs in the parts and service department, were downright rude. In particular Mr. Parts & Service--when my husband asked about ordering an e-bike, he replied gruffly that Mel's would never order that kind of bike. We want to support local businesses and have decided those two employees attitudes toward potentially paying customers have soured us on Mel's and we will shop elsewhere. On the other hand, the salesperson at Bikes & Boards was helpful and friendly. I understand it's hard to find good help so maybe send those two I'll-mannered men to sales training to learn to be pleasant! read more

We stopped by Mel's while on vacation as I was looking for waterproof trail shoes. They had an excellent selection including Columbia, Merrell, Keen, and New Balance. They also have a lot of outdoor gear and clothing. The store was very organized and clean and the staff was going in friendly and informative. Downstairs they have an amazing selection of performance bikes and some really great deals. read more

The employees at Mel's were so very helpful and friendly! I had an issue of forgetting my tent poles and the nice young man working the camping section attempted to fit my tent with new poles. I ended up buying a new tent instead and I am so glad I did because I love it! It is a 2 person Nemo tent that is so very easy to set up, roomy, lightweight, and very good airflow. I was pleasantly surprised with the great selection of not only camping gear, but cycling, paddle boards, kayaks, fishing, and clothing!! I couldn't resist getting some clothing and accessories. Mels has sold me a broken shotgun twice. The most recent time it was an older Wingmaster that would not hold shells in the mag tube. I brought it in the next day and was told that this wasn't something they could test for because they can't cycle live rounds through used guns. Fair enough, but I'm pretty sure they sell dummy rounds used for exactly this literally ten feet from the gun counter. Regardless, I'm not sure that a reputable gun store is one that takes the owners word when selling a used gun. They ended up telling me that the best they could do is to send it to their gunsmith near Madison, but I'd have to pay for shipping, parts, and labor. No other solution was offered, and at this point I wouldn't even trust them to fix it anyway. The people there are nice enough but in my opinion it is completely unacceptable and irresponsible to sell used guns with potentially dangerous issues. Avoid Mel's like the plague. Everything there is overpriced anyway. read more

I needed to rent a bike for cycling the trails around Rhinelander. I contacted Mel's and informed them of my purpose and the type of bike I thought that I needed: a hybrid mountain bike with flat handle bars. When I arrived a week later, I was told that they only had road/racing bicycles as they had sold all the other kinds. Seth said that he wished that we had talked before my arrival. He did his best to inform me about the operation of the road bike. But it was difficult to switch gears; the 'drop bar' handlebars caused me to support my torso with my arms which caused soreness in my shoulders. In sum, failure to communicate my needs to the person who needed the information in order to provide good service resulted in a somewhat dissatisfied customer. read more

Mel's provides excellent customer service always. At the end of the 2017-18 ski season, my skis sustained some unexplained damage. Mel's had previously documented my purchase and warranty and worked out a free replacement with the vendor. They took care of everything. I ended up with a brand new pair of skis along with upgraded bindings at no cost. Mel's was and is amazing. They stand behind their products and their customers. My family has been going to Mel's for as long as I can remember. We are huge skiers, both Alpine and Nordic and this is the go to place to repair, trade-in or buy new skis. What I love about this store besides EVERYTHING, is that they have all different price ranges. You could buy new skis and pay hundreds or a couple grand or they have gently used skis for beginners or people who love to ski but can't afford the expensive skis. They have everything one possibly needs for outdoor sports. I absolutely love it here and can get lost for hours just checking all the awesome merchandise out. Also, the people that work here are very knowledgeable about their department. The Nordic ski guy is absolutely awesome. And I will never stop shopping here. read more
