This wine is their highest priced at $45.

I was hosted for a luncheon and tasting here with a group of fellow wine bloggers, and I enjoyed everything about this winery. Melrose Vineyards is located near the South Umpqua River and the owner (and all-around down-to-Earth farmer) Wayne Parker is a real gem. He planted the original vineyard here in 1996 and in a few years, began selling his fruit to other wineries. Soon, Wayne decided to start his own boutique winery. Today, that tasting room sits in a photogenic barn that's a century old. The tasting room is part wine sampling station, part gift shop. If you're looking for wine-themed chotchkes or a souvenir to carry back home, this is your place. From necklaces to magnets to gourmet food items to t-shirts, the boutique at Melrose has what you're looking for. I had a ton of fun browsing the various knick-knacks for sale. There's a large tasting bar and a small outdoor balcony with a couple of tables and stunning views of the landscape. I would recommend trying to snag one of the outdoor tables if you're here for a tasting but if they are full, at least step outside to snap a few photos. My group was served a light and bright lunch from the winery's chef, who also helps cater group events. We were served a portion of vegetable lasagna with a small salad and garlic bread. The food was all vegan (even made with fake "cashew cheese") and while I was skeptical, it did taste good and was made with farm-fresh ingredients. Due to Wayne's outrageous hospitality, he literally poured anything any of us wanted. Yes, anything. I finally stopped at a dozen wines, although I wanted to try it all. I kept asking Wayne what I should try next, and he didn't steer me wrong. Out of the wines I tried, there were a couple that I found to meet or exceed my expectations. The first was the Parker's Pinot Noir (priced at $45, this was the most expensive wine for sale). This wine had a long finish and slightly harsh tannins that probably need a few more months to a year to calm down. But the structure and flavor of this wine was very good. On the opposite spectrum, the $18 Two Dog Red was a fantastic poolside sipper. This blush wine is bright pink with an adorable, eye-catching label that was created by an artist from Hawaii. You may be drawn in by the gimmicky name and cartoon label, but this is a crowd-pleasing wine with crisp, slightly sweet pineapple and cherry fruit notes. This is a wine that even your friend who swears she "doesn't like wine" will not only be able to drink, but will likely love. For those seeking a white that's a little bit different, try the Pinot Gris ($20). With its pale straw color and melon-heavy nose, this wine is also interesting enough to recommend. It's worth mentioning that there's something wine-wise here that will fit into almost everyone's budget. The wines are very fairly priced, with the most expensive bottle topping out just below $50. To me, Melrose offers a real Oregon experience. From the extensive porfolio of myriad varietals to the renovated old barn, it doesn't get much better. And if you get the chance to chat with Wayne, take it.

Im giving this winery a 3. It has a beautiful setting and Im told the food is good unfortunately we didn't try it but the wine is lacking. If you want to just go for the wine, go elsewhere. We tried 4 wines, all of which tasted off. We tried 2 other wineries in the area and enjoyed the experience

It's such a nice vineyards. They have a fluffy gentle dog would greet you when you arrive. Their wines are divine. They are dry and a lot of their wines won awards. And the prices of their wine are reasonable, and less expensive than many of the vineyards in Douglas county. They also sell some funny and well made crafts and merchants

Good wine, plus lovely setting plus fun tasting room plus friendly staff, plus fair tasting policy easily results in four stars. Our expectations were exceeded. We're glad we visited Melrose and are happy to recommend it to others. The tasting room is in an old barn in a lovely setting looking out on the vineyard. I tried to capture it in photos, but I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't take photos inside the tasting room. It's big and open and funky charming, easily accessible for everyone and chock full of wine related gifts and goodies. It also has a great view out the back to the vineyard. And it's chilly in there - take a sweater. Founded by Wayne and Deedy Parker in 1996, Melrose's grape growing and wine production effort shows the benefits of hard work and community engagement. As evidenced by the phone almost ringing off the hook while we were there (April) with folks calling to reserve a spot in a crab feed that was just announced and scheduled for JULY. To be held at the beautiful event center that sits at the edge of the vineyard, it is one of several events sold out in advance every year we were told. We're not surprised. If we lived closer than 3 hours drive to Roseburg, we'd go too! We were surprised to learn, seeing the size of the Melrose vineyards, that only about 10% of the grapes they grow end up in their own bottles of wine and the rest are sold to other winemakers. Surprising because they bottle a lot of different varietals, both red and white. Tasting is free for three( metered) pours and there is a modest fee ($5?) for six pours. We decided to try all reds and our line up of six included Baco Noir, Pinotage (a varietal hybrid created from Pinot Noir and Cinsault), Dolcetto, Syrah, a blend called Equinox (Dolcetto, Tempranillo, Baco Noir and Syrah) and Port. We carried away the Baco, Equinox and Port. But all were fun to try and were wines we would drink again. If you're visiting the North Umpqua wine region, you'll be happy if you add Melrose to your wine tasting itinerary!

Came with a party of 4 + an infant. Lee helped us today and was absolutely amazing. We came from another large winery where we were treated poorly and Lee totally turned our day around with her welcoming attitude. The view is also amazing here and the wines are better too

Yummy!!!

Great people, great wine and beautiful location! Friendly dogs and pet friendly a bonus.

We are members of Harvest Hosts RV club that networks with farms, wineries, golf courses and other attractions for travelers to overnight. Melrose Vineyards was our first time using it and we absolutely loved it and Wayne and his sister really made our stay there a great experience. He invited us to stroll the property and sample the grapes. We bought a glass of wine and some BBQ rub from the tasting room. What a beautiful place and wonderful people. Thanks Wayne!

Pulled pork anyone! Good stuff!

The crafting exhibits for quilts, knitted and crocheted items, and spinning/weaving were very interesting. Two different ladies explained differences in the wool and spinning techniques. NOT GOOD at all. There were a couple beer tents with poor selections...but it's the fair. The sign showed beer $7 each. He charged me $15. Hmmm Not being any, I asked why the difference in price. THEN he said that because one of the beers was an IPA (!?), it was $8. I was having a nice day so instead of tipping him, he just got paid. (Bait and switch prices?) (It was the booth near the stage, btw.) The food and beer got a 1 star. So that's where the 3 star rating came from. No more Douglas County Fair. Thanks but we're through. P.S. The 4H kids and animals were impressive! They get a 5 star, too!

I really wanted to like this place because it's the one fairly fancy place in town...but, it was a disappointing experience. We got to the restaurant for our 10am reservation but the door didn't open until exactly 10. People huddled under the porch because it was raining fairly hard. We were shown inside, then back outside to another room to our table. We ordered and they said the buffet was in the tent-outside. So, coat & rain hood back on to go to the buffet. Unfortunately, the buffet wasn't ready so we went back to our seats. The buffet wasn't ready for around 20 minutes-because some of the kitchen crew called in sick so they were operating with less help. The remaining crew was working hard to get it set up. So they were doing a good job-they just needed more help. The buffet had: Eggs, Potatoes, Bacon, Sausage, Biscuits & Gravy, Jalapeño Cheddar Bagels, Smoked Salmon, Salad, Dressing, Potato Dill Soup, an Omelet bar and Prime Rib. Unfortunately, most of the food we got wasn't warm. I think the top of the chafing dishes were able to cool off, even though, the bottom was hot. Didn't know that until going back in. Thats a dangerous situation where bacteria can grow. The bread was excellent. It was a chewy Italian bread. The butter balls were firm so hard to spread. There were bagels and smoked salmon but it would have been nice to have something other than just jalapeño cheddar bagels for the smoked salmon. Maybe, get something more neutral in flavor that more people would eat. I think I have fairly normal tastes and love biscuits & gravy but the biscuits and gravy had an odd flavor to me. I wasn't a fan but that may be a preference. The prime rib was ok but not terribly tasty. The Potato dill soup was just ok, too. The omelet bar probably was the safe choice since you pick your ingredients but I make those often at home so I wanted to try other things. I think they are trying to be fancy instead of just making good food that everybody would like. Service was good. We did have to wait for coffee but overall they were nice and did a good job letting people know when the buffet was ready. Overall: Ambiance is 5/5; Service 4/5, Food-the temperature, late food and having to walk in the rain to the tent and back with a plate of food while getting rained on drops the overall score to 3/5. Opening that heavy door with a plate of food is a problem, too. Maybe have the tent right outside the entrance to the main dining room so your customers and their full plates don't have to be out in the rain. There has to be a better way.
