There are lots of teachers who can teach the technical playing of an instrument. There are fewer…read moreteachers who can inspire a love of music within a child. And there are FAR fewer teachers who can do both. Matthew Pavilanis is a rare find in a music teacher...the best I've ever encountered. He gets to know his students and teaches them at their level and incorporating his students' interests. For example, my son likes math and patterns, so Matthew taught him music theory along with the usual performance pieces. Other kids in Matthew's studio enjoy singing, so Matthew has taught them how to sing and play at the same time. Some of his students like jazz music, so they focus on that. I'm not a pianist, so I don't know the typical progression for piano students, but I get the impression that his students are improving faster than most kids do. Or, at least I am consistent impressed with the level of playing at the recitals. Anyway, my son graduated from high school recently. He took piano lessons from Matthew for 10 years. Matthew nurtured, taught, and mentored my son for a decade, taking him from being an absolute beginner in 2nd grade to performing movements from Tchaikovsky's Concerto in B-flat Minor and Grieg's Concerto in A Minor during his solo senior recital. This year, in order to help my son prepare for his challenging recital, Matthew didn't just go the extra mile...it was more like an extra hundred miles. He understood exactly what kind of support my son needed and provided it in spades. As a mother, the pride I felt watching my son achieve something that truly stretched his abilities was priceless and unforgettable. And I know that the lessons my son learned from that experience will apply in his life to much more than just music. All this is to say, Matthew is a one-of-a-kind teacher and mentor. He treats every child as an individual with unique interests and needs, and tries to bring out their best both musically and personally.
