25 years ago this was a good store. Today it has very poor selection of used LPs. Most of the inventory is new vinyl. 90% of the used LP's are flea market or things you could have acquired at a Recordland Dollar Sale. However, I had a couple LPs pulled that I was somewhat interested in, but changed my mind after having a conversation with the guy behind the counter. When I entered the store, I asked if he was the owner, he replied, "well sort of". Not sure what that means? So anyway, this is where things went downhill. I had a record that was clearly stuck inside the paper sleeve due to some sort of stickiness. When I successfully removed the record from the sleeve, I asked the guy for a new sleeve and told him to dispose of the old one because the LP was stuck to something inside along the edge. His condescending reply, "oh nonsense, it's probably because the paper was folded". I thought to myself, "well that was an odd reply, what's this guy's problem? Why would he immediately dismiss the fact that it was legitimately stuck?" I've been collecting records for 50 years. I've had thousands of LPs pass through my home, buying and selling via Goldmine Magazine, and later on the internet through various platforms. I can assure you, it's not my first time removing an LP from a paper inner sleeve, Lol. But hey this is a record store, and that was your typical condescending record store "sort of owner" guy reply. Straight out of the Empire Records play-by-play handbook. Anyway, I eventually began looking for CDs near the till, and overheard part of a conversation between the "sort of owner" and his friend who'd just entered. The "sort of owner" said that he was being pushed out or evicted from an apartment or house that he was renting, and in need of another rental property. His friend mentioned Ramsay, then their discussion switched to the cost of homes and rentals today. Having lived in Ramsay for nearly 30 years, and being 6 ft away, I chimed in with my two cents, mentioning that I was very familiar with the area, and flipped a couple of houses for a decent profit several years ago. I was about to say that part of the reason the housing market skyrocketed the way it has is because of people practicing the house flip for profit. I was also going to add, that at the time I didn't have a crystal ball, it was just a job, and a means to support my family and keep a roof over our heads. Unfortunately I never had a chance to say any of this because the "sort of owner" cut me off saying "don't pretend you don't know! You're the one to blame! It's because of people like you that we can't afford to buy a house today, and why rent is so high!", bla bla bla. The next thing I know "sort of owner" begins waving his arms, ranting on and on about this. Then I asked again, "are you the owner?" To which he replied, "why, do you want to buy the store?" With that, I replied "your business must not be doing well if you can't afford to buy a home, or pay your rent. Not to mention offering to sell your store at the drop of a hat, so no thanks." Touché I thought, one insult deserves another. Besides at this point it was 2 on 1. Then he and his buddy began to whine because I hurt "sort of owners" feelings. Keep in mind, I wasn't the first one to throw any insults or escalate the discussion. To the "Sort Of Owner"... How long do you think a 120-year-old wooden structure will last? Do you think they are timeless, and don't require upkeep? At a certain point these homes need to be renovated, updated; exterior facia replacement, new insulation, vapor barriers, new roof, interior subflooring, flooring materials such as hardwood, carpet, tile, linoleum, etc. Not to mention removal of plaster walls due to mold, being replaced by drywall where framing is involved. Then we have cabinetry in the kitchen, bathrooms, as well as fixtures in the aforementioned. And let's not forget about electrical panels, wiring, and plumbing upgrading! Unfortunately these upgrades are not free, despite what you might think. Without these actions, a 120-year-old home would become dilapidated and unsuitable for habitation. The end result would be demolition, with some sort of ugly eyesore infill taking its place. Obviously the infill thing is happening on a smaller scale, but if many of those older homes weren't renovated and saved, they'd have been demolished, and replaced by more infills, thus Ramsay and Inglewood would lose their classic charm. Also keep in mind, if that were to have happened, those infills would cost as much as an older renovated home if not more. So you'd still be whining and priced out of the market in those neighbourhoods either way. Bottom line "sort of owner"...if you can't afford to buy a home in Calgary, or pay the current rent, stop blaming someone else's successes on your life's failures, as that's a losers game. Time to grow up. Typical of so many millennials, lacking perspective and never seeing anything objectively. read more

They specialize in punk and indie records, but they also have a great selection of new and used jazz, blues, and hip hop, all served up in a cool, well organized space. So if you're looking for an obscure artist on vinyl (as if vinyl itself wasn't hard enough to come by), then get yourself down to Melodiya Records. And when you get there, don't be alarmed if all you see are comic books, as they share the space with Phoenix Comics. Melodiya is the best record store in the city. Take THAT Recordland!!!! Jk! Jk! ... well sort of. The selection of dollar records is phenomenal. If you have the patience (and back strength) to peruse them, you will likely find some golden gems. The selection of all varieties of indie is quite expansive as well (both in vinyl and compact disc). I have found some decent deals on CDs (in the $7-$9 range) that I would not be able to find many other places. Nice staff too! read more

My favorite record haunt in the city. If you are looking for the latest tunes on delicious vinyl, Melodiya is the best bet. If you are looking for used $1 vinyl, be prepared to dig: they are not organized in any way, and being nearly on the floor, your search can lead to some uncomfortable yoga poses and cramped muscles. These are only the $1 pieces, but there is quality to be found. New arrivals of used vinyl are stacked on a proper shelf, the quality of the titles is immediately obvious ("Revolver" and "Veedon Fleece" in the same trip? HECK YES), though they are well aware of some of the albums' worth ("Revolver" was $15, which is still less than you would find at Recordland). Their CD collection is humble but often enlightening (and right now half-price - are they phasing out CDs altogether?). The sales staff are knowledgeable and polite: Matt kept a pretty straight face when a teen girl asked about Billy Joel, of all people, on CD, and kept his cool when a middle aged lady repeatedly asked him what the best Slayer album is. Obviously "Reign In Blood", dammit!! Top notch place. read more

This place is awesome! They may not have the best selection of all the coveted vinyl, but they have the best selection of a 1 dollar records in calgary!!(IMHO) And that Is the reason I go! On a good day I can spend a good hour just sitting cross legged on the ground digging through old obscure and forgotten records. I have Found many great records that are staples of my collection! stuff like the soundtrack for midnight cowboy or some obscure organ record from the early sixties and a whole bunch of other whacky stuff! Their is always something interesting in a pile of 10 records! and I never hesitate to buy anything that seems like it has even a small chance of being a jewel! Because it's only a dollar! Everytime I go I typically come out with 10 to 20 new vinyls, and it's always nice to by that much and not feel guilty for spending!! How else you gonna get 8 hours worth of music for chump change?? ..... The Internet??? Hahahaha If you like vinyl get up off your bean bag and come get some records!!!! Check it! read more

Enter off of 17th or from the Phoenix comic store next door. Hum a sweet Melodiya as this store rocks with new and used vinyl in very well labelled and organised bins. There is also a great selection of new and used CDs varying in price. Stock here seems just a tad bit pricier than Hot Wax down in Kensington but condition of used items is pretty top notch. At the back of the store, hang action figures in boxes and another selection of large bins containing comics at $1.50. Melodiya has a wee library of music books and a larger DVD selection on musicians and music documentaries. Fantastic layout for a smaller space, they sell new and used vinyl, receivers and turntables. Everything in the store is clean and very well taken care of. I have found many rare-ish records and unofficial releases all for a decent price. The used section usually holds many gems. They also gave me a reasonable credit when I traded in records. Very happy with my record player purchase too, I will go back many times. read more

Best prices on used records in the city. If you are lucky enough to find something you're looking for in the used bin, chances are that it will be 2/3 the price of any other record store in town. Thorough new releases across all genres, with a very knowledgable and friendly staff. Has been a long time supporter of Calgary's DIY music scene too. Bring your comic book/action figure collecting friends to search the Phoenix Comics side of the store while you dig for records too. If dollar records are your thing, this is a quality spot too. Great, great shop. They know their stuff, and will happily special-order in items upon request. The staff are friendly and helpful; they don't pull that "record-store-elitist" attitude that so many other places do (well, not so much in Calgary, but in other cities....!) Recommended. They traffic mostly in indie and modern, but you might be surprised at some of the other goodies you can find hidded in there! :) read more

Part of a comics shop. The manager for the record store section seemed friendly enough. Good vinyl selection of somewhat obscure artists (e.g eyehategod, neurosis, venom, etc). The cd section did not have a wide variety, but their prices were terrific. I bought two albums for just over $5! Would definitely shop again if given the opportunity. read more
