Yesterday I had to make asKtop at the yarn store and couldn't think of a better way to treat myself than with Peggy Ann's, Unfortunately, most of what I got was disappointing. I did start with my favorite - the smiley face buttercream icing sugar cookie. Really, the bottom sugar cookie is just acting as a vehicle for the nearly 1" tall circle of buttercream icing (it may be frosting - I honestly don't know the difference and, really, I don't care, all I know is that I can eat their buttercream with a spoon.) It took 3 days to actually get to the sugar cookie on the bottom. Along with the cookie, I bought just a bunch of random baked goods. I bought my husband an iced brownie which he didn't finish because it was just way too sweet. I bought one of my childhood favorites - a cream horn. This is coming from the person who ate straight butter cream for three days - the cream was so sweet it just overwhelmed the delicate horn. I ate the pastry which was delicious only after I scraped out the cream. I bought a blueberry scone for breakfast - nothing at all special. And finally, I got my husband a banana nut muffin. He said "taste this" - I don't know what was wrong with it but it was awful and we tossed it. Peggy Ann Bakery is known for their petit fours. Both my husband and my son's FIL said "huh, I don't know" when asked if they knew what a petit four was. If you're younger than 50, you might not know either, but these tiny cakes are a favorite at Southern showers and teas. I've really never known anyone who just ate them because they liked them but they do make you want to go "pinkies out" when you see them displayed on the table. I was really excited about my visit to Peggy Ann Bakery but now it just makes me sad - I spent $16 yet we threw away almost half of what I bought.

This small bakery is tucked away next to Big Bad Breakfast off Highway 72. It's named such because the owner's child has a congenital heart defect and she wants to bring awareness to the condition through baking. Sweet and commendable goal. It's definitely a come-and-go type of place; there's not much seating inside, but it is very cute and clean! There's a large shelf of fresh breads and then a display table and display cooler of amazing baked goods. The owner identifies as Hispanic and Italian and it's reflective in her baked goods. There are some truly creative and unique goodies to be found here -- beautiful to look at, executed impeccably, and delicious to taste. A young woman -- heck, maybe a teenager -- greeted me when I walked in. She was soft-spoken but very polite and helpful. They had sold out of a few things but still had reasonably ample displays when I arrived after lunch. A small plate with one of their breads and olive oil for dipping sat for sampling next to the register. I selected a sweetened condensed milk mini pie, a dulce de leche turnover, and the viral chocolate chip cookie croissant. ALL were delicious. My least favorite was the dulce de leche turnover, simply because I'd have liked a *teeny* bit more filling in it. The pastry itself was golden and flaky and the Dulce de leche was smooth and super sweet. Still like a 8/10 but the other two items I got... I'd not had a chance to nab a chocolate chip cookie croissant yet. I know The Moon offers them as well but I think that's the only other spot around town that does. This first try already has my heart, though; I don't need to try elsewhere. Somehow the croissant was flaky and buttery while the cookie baked on top of it was perfectly chewy. There was more cookie goo inside that was still, well, gooey. The texture was amazing and somehow it wasn't overly sweet and the chips weren't overly chunky (which is usually a problem for me in CC cookies). Also, the croissant was ENORMOUS. My husband was glad I was willing to share. ;) The sweetened condensed milk mini pie was unlike any treat I've had before and I loved it. Sweet, creamy, chewy, sticky...the meringue on top was an amazing marshmallow-y texture and the crust on the bottom was a crumbly delight. I loved this! They also have coffee drinks available but I didn't buy any this time. I cannot WAIT to return and try more delicious treats. Even though it's out of the way for me, this bakery is worth a special trip.

I asked her to please pick me up the signature grilled cheese sandwich. My sandwich was a grilled chicken breast with Brie, shallot, apple slices, and fig jam. The gluten free bread was toasted and the chicken was perfectly cooked. My sandwich was very good. When I order it again, I will skip the fig jam. The sweet taste is ok but not my preference. The fig jam made my bread mushy on the side the jam was applied. 5/5 If you are gluten intolerant, Mason Dixon is your go to for freshly baked breads, cupcakes, muffins and more. I was in Homewood going to my fav Greek restaurant years ago and found their Birmingham location. I will definitely get to Mason Dixon soon to try the grilled chicken without fig jam. I know it will be great! It's good y'all. 5/5

So, the (seasonal) peach iced tea was good--and actually tasted like fresh peaches. I also got the famous chicken/rice bowl and added an avocado. Pros: They were GENEROUS with the avocado--I got a whole one I ordered online and it was ready to go at exactly the right time They have ample seating (inside and out) The bowl was very, very large The picked red onions were delightful Cons: My grilled chicken breast was kind of gnarly--you know when you bite into meat and it just tastes of gristle? Think that So. Much. Rice. There wasn't a lot of dressing to spread around due to it being so thick (it was tasty though!) The "soft boiled egg" was very, very hard and overcooked I am fine with gluten so this likely won't be a regular stop for me, but if you're gluten sensitive/free and/or don't mind splurging for an expensive meal...this is your spot.

The outside of the shop advertises all the goodies inside. It kind of reminds me of a candy store you might find in a resort/tourist town like Pensacola Beach or Gatlinburg: fudge, popcorn, candy apples, lots of different kinds of confections. A bell rang as I walked in and someone came out to serve me right away. He was pleasant and eager to share with me all about their products. He offered me samples of all the popcorn and fudge and also told me about their loyalty program and their monthly drawings. One thing I really liked was they had a lot of popular treats (turtles, chocolate covered graham crackers, chocolate covered Oreos, etc) each available in all the different varieties of chocolate (i.e. milk, dark, and white chocolate). They also have turtles made with cashews, as well as the traditional pecan. I got a dark chocolate cashew turtle for my mom, a regular milk chocolate pecan turtle for me, milk chocolate covered graham crackers for my husband, and a bag of cheddar cheese popcorn. I don't remember the total off the top of my head, but I do remember feeling it was a touch on the pricy side. Each item was wrapped nicely. Mom enjoyed her treat and so did husband. He was nice enough to give me one of the graham crackers and it was very good! Nice ratio of chocolate to graham and the chocolate was super nice and creamy. I still haven't gotten around to my chocolate but I imagine it will be similarly tasty. Haven't yet met a turtle I didn't like. The cheddar popcorn was just alright. I thought the cheese flavor was a little too artificial for my preferences, and some of the popcorn was a tiny bit stale, though none of it was unpleasant enough to keep me from eating it, lol. Just nit picking. Overall, this is a nice little shop with lovely service and especially good chocolates. Give them a try if you're passing through!
