We had high hopes since we have lived in Avila for 2 years and tried Mei's for the first time yesterday. We ordered takeout with the Chicken lo mein which was good, and honey walnut shrimp which was excellent( the only positive). We ordered General TSO chicken which had very small pieces of chicken that were dry and hard and the sauce had zero flavor. The Mongolian beef with meat that was so chewy and gristle like we had to throw most of it out. It also lacked any flavor with a very watery sauce with more onions than meat. Overall everything besides the shrimp had the exact same taste and was lacking flavor. Very dissatisfying after spending $92. read more

My most recent Mei's Chinese Restaurant venture was a "to-go" experience. The occasion...our Anniversary. Order roughly 20 minutes before pick-up time and the order was indeed ready. Ordered over the phone with Kelly's Sister (apparently Kelly left prior to Covid-19) and as I ordered I confirmed the prices. I arrived to pick the order up and the Restaurant only had 2 tables occupied and no one at the register. Within 2-3 minutes Kelly's sister came out of the kitchen area and asked if the order was "to-go". The bill was $94.15, so I gave her $94.25. She took the cash into her register and didn't bother giving me the change. We ordered: CRISPY GARLIC BEEF - $18.95 (3.5/5 - normally a 5/5 but having it "to-go" resulted in the "crispy" beef being not so "crispy"!) WOR WONTON SOUP (FOR 2) - $14.00 (5/5 - really enjoy this Soup...always delicious) WALNUT SHRIMP IN SWEET SAUCE - $20.95 (5/5 - FABULOUS) BLACK MUSHROOMS WITH NAPPA CABBAGE - $16.50 (5/5 - first time for this dish...very yummy) ORANGE CHICKEN - $16.95 (4/5 - again, normally a 5/5, but something was lost in the "to-go" order translation.) While it seems to be impossible to find Chinese food in the area as good as we get in the Fresno/Clovis area, Mei's was good. Not great, compared to The Great Wall in Clovis, but good. My husband likes pan fried noodles that are crispy and bean sprouts on his chowmein and while I ordered, in person the pan fried noodles, they were limp, soggy noodles. I got Kung Pao tofu and there were only peanuts, celery and onion in it. No bell peppers or snap peas. Very boring dish. I will try them again and have a lunch special. My family used to go here when I was a kid! I moved back a few years ago from LA and was so happy to find out it's still family owned and still delicious!! My husband and I love the Ku Ting Crispy Chicken, the Orange Chicken (tastes home made and fresh), the Chow Fun with Beef - my husband talked me into this one and I'll never go back to lo mein! The beef with broccoli is great. The Egg rolls are super fresh and delicious- totally hit the spot. If you're in the SLO area - this is the best spot for sure. Ordered kung poa chicken and magnolia beef. Food portions were good. But the food was terrible. Reason for portion size was it was all onions. Kind of reminded me " where's the meat". Both dishes tasted the same. Onions, celery, a few pieces of green onion and chicken or beef that was hard to find. Fried shrimp Appetizer was all batter. I dissected the appetizer and found a very small shrimp. Fried rice was rice with soya sauce - not fried. Which was very tough and had no taste. BBQ appetizer was black with a red outer edge. We both agreed the soup broth (egg drop soup) was very good. It had a deep flavor. The entrees was mildly spiced, which i liked. The sauce was slightly sweet. Plenty to eat: onions, celery, etc., the chicken is not cut into small pieces. Rather, it is cut into long thin pieces. Perfect for cooking in a wok. I've been here a few times this past year. Very unusual service in my opinion. I observed if you're a customer that doesn't look familiar, they will seat you at a small table, if you're a regular, They seat you at a large table. The owner sat us down at a table for two and it was very small. And a single lady came in after us, they called here by name, sat her at a table that seats four people. She took her order first then came to take our order. Her food came up first ours came out later. Totally backwards here at this restaurant. I've noticed customers were handing the servers money and they're being very discreet about it as the servers/owners are throwy in extra food for them. I felt like I was in a movie or something or they're playing undercover boss television show. The food is pretty good though, everything is made to order and seems pretty fresh. I live in the local area and have been coming here for over 16 years. Their food has always been good. The original owners were AMAZING! Great hospitality and catered to local customers and families. I can recall Mei taking orders holding my then one year old son. You could see her in the window preparing vegetables for opening time, waving at the locals walking by, etc. I hear the restaurant is still run by extended family but just not the same customer service. For me the hometown hospitality is no longer what it once was. HOWEVER, their food has always been fresh and good tasting. They have the same menu (prices have gone up a bit) but worth a try. Our favorite dish is the walnut shrimp in sweet sauce ...yummmmm and the Kung Pao chicken. It is a bit of a whole in the wall building and no aesthetic upgrades so don't expect fancy dining...just define good Chinese cuisine. read more

Such a wonderful locally owned restaurant! My family loves supporting small businesses so we decided to try Mei's while vacationing down the road at Seacrest Resort Hotel. We weren't disappointed! Our server, who may have been the owner, was the sweetest lady and she helped us with our order. I just let her choose for me. There were three adults and we ordered three entrees with the add ons for $7.20 each entree that included rice, egg rolls and soup and it was enough food for 6-7 people!! It was absolutely delicious, the service was amazing and we will definitely be back on our next visit to Pismo. Do yourself a favor and skip the chain restaurants and eat at Mei's!! Mei's seems family owned and operated because they have excellent service and are very kind and friendly. Also, this place is the closest thing I've found to pan fried noodles I get back at home in Fresno. The food was extremely fresh and everything we ordered tasted great! Candidly; this has been basically a "port in a storm" for Chinese food. But over time...the portion size became more skimpy and the cleanliness of the place was suspect. A recent board of health inspection by SLO county had this to say... and confirmed my experience. Mei's Chinese Restaurant, 1759 Shell Beach Road, Pismo Beach Points lost: 15.5 Notes: The Shell Beach restaurant had several major violations during its May inspection, including an overall need to keep up with "repairs needed due to structural aging and deterioration." Other violations included raw eggs being removed from the fridge and kept in the kitchen overnight at room temperature; using sink drain boards as food prep surfaces for vegetables and thawing raw animal food products; old grease build up on the floors and walls and dirty floor sinks.
