Great wine, poor/rude management.
was so excited to return to Medhurst, as my husband and I had stumbled upon it a couple of years ago, and truly felt it was the most relaxing winery we had been to. We saved it to be our 5th and last winery of the day so that we could sit outside and relax.
Upon our arrival, we shuffled over to the tasting area and ready to get started - there were 9 of us. We went to order a bunch of nibbles, and were told the only thing remaining on the menu was cheese and cake. We ordered 2 cheese platters, and then my mum-in-law asked the lady if we could bring in our picnic baskets as they didn't have much food to offer. The lady said, normally they do not allow it, but as they were closing in an hour and did not have other food options, it would be fine.
While my family started the tasting, I at 7 months pregnant, brought out our 3 picnic baskets and unpacked on the table outside. I went into get a cappuccino, while my mom and dad-in-law, sat at with the table and couldn't wait to join them and relax. As I'm walking out, my dad-in-law was packing up the table.
The waitress & "manager" had asked him to put away the picnic. I put manager in quotes, as when my mum-in-law and I came out and let her know we were told it was okay, she was quite snappy and said, it is not allowed, I am the MANAGER. I suspect she is a very new manager at the way she spoke to us and the way her staff were obviously untrained. She then very condescendingly said to us - we make money off of our food and wines, of course we wouldn't allow food. We then mentioned that we would love to order food, but were told they were out of everything. She very rudely said, yes we've been slammed, it's the end of the day and we've run out of food.
We then brought the cheese platters inside because of the flies outside, and had to actually bus our own table to get a seat.
The last time we were there we bought close to 20 bottles of wine and really enjoyed ourselves. The wine is great, but very poor management. It's great they make money off of their food and wines, but they certainly lost money off of us buying wine, as we had too bad a taste in our mouth to make a big purchase. Would certainly not return or recommend others to check it out - there are likely other hidden gems more worth your money. So much for the holiday spirit... read more
