First, the dropoff of the soil sample was easy with a dropoff box and I encourage anyone wanting a soil sample tested to dropoff or ship to this lab. Only a few others on the East Coast (namely land grant colleges like Rutgers, Penn State, SUNY, etc.) do these in case you wonder if your garden is safe for growing edible plants. As for the campus, a stately grand colonial architectural feel which even the new buildings like the arts center maintains. Copious all brick and white wood accents all exteriors with large grand height and stature as to shield, distance, and obviate the buzzing Brooklyn noisy locales all around the perimeter from the Flatbush commercial strip to Ocean Ave's speedy traffic to the Caribbean and Russian and other communities adjacent. Entry points are namely from Ocean Ave at Ave H by car to the ring road, Campus Road, or Brooklyn College stop on 2/5 trains on the eastern edge. Easy navigation thanks to a simple layout over just 35 acres makes getting lost unlikely even for unfamiliar visitors using the campus as a park. The famous lily pond is particularly tranquil. The most recent famous event here was Sanders' campaign launch a few months ago, but the arts center is its own busy community set of arts events and there're so very many student orgs doing so many great activities here. Brooklyn College is also home to a cafe in Boylan Hall and nice athletics fields which while not for public use are nice open spaces to admire and enjoy. All in all, a wonderful campus with tons of community works totalling a great asset to the community and city.

I received my BSN (bachelors in nursing) here, so I did the professional / clinical phase of the…read morenursing program (full time) here as well as several of the pre-reqs for it part-time so I have spent some time here, unfortunately. I say that is unfortunate because the entire institution is a bit of a scheme. They take every penny they can from you, I had to fight to get some of my pre-reqs transferred over and they wouldn't accept several of them because they said it was not comparable although the descriptions were nearly identical. It is worth mentioning that they recently have started a paradigm shift in administration and protocols, so that gives me hope that things here will improve. Although one of these changes is getting rid of the capstone rotation (ie nurse 1-1 preceptor ship at end of program and the one that really matters the most) and replaced with lab simulations and group clinicals, which I do not approve of but at least I was the last class to get the real preceptorship. Would I gamble it, knowing what I know now, with nearly forty thousand dollars a year? Not likely, but it would be interesting to see if the changes will improve or worsen their standing. The new dean of nursing seems to want to change things for the better, so I cautiously have my hopes up. I can look past that, what I can not look past is the attitude of the administration and staff here (NOT referring to the professors, they are the only saving grace this school has other than being close to an empanada truck and the newly built market across the street). I am referring to the nursing "advisors" who I can not even refer to as not being able to care less about you because that would implicate some level of neutrality or apathy; even worse, in reality several of them have more vitriol toward you than apathy. Not only that, but the only thing they are consistent in is their inconsistency and lack of communication. I don't think I can count high enough to document how many times students would miss a deadline, a class, an event, a registration, a requirement, an-ANTHING because they do not communicate it. They don't tell you what needs to be done, when or how. When you ask them they religiously tell you to ask your colleagues / other students, then when you get misinformation from people who, themselves hearing it by word of mouth, they literally yell at you for not knowing something that is their responsibility to inform you on. I honestly don't get it - they have Blackboard, it seems like it would cut out a lot of the back and forth to just make one CLEAR, COHESIVE and STANDARD schedule of requirements, resources and instructions and post it for all students to have access to. To demonstrate my point, I remember one time I went to them in 1st or 2nd level nursing program about classes because there was some confusion about signing up for odd-number clinical with odd-number lecture sections or something. The advisor saw me reading the schedule on her door -- said nothing. After several minutes of planning my schedule I asked her a question about it and she said "oh those are out of date, they have been for over six months". Then WHY ARE THEY STILL ON YOUR DOOR (facing the hall for every student to see and refer to as an "official" source of information)? Literally every semester there were always, always, always, always several issues with clinical rotations. Either they have not been able to get enough locations signed up so students don't get placed (and thus either get held back or have to watch videos in school of procedures that we are paying 38k/year for hands-on experience), or they don't have enough instructors, or the instructors don't show up and fall off the planet, etc. I think you get the idea, and look I'm not salty. I graduated dual honors cum laude and was in the top 5% of my class but if you're considering LIU nursing I think you should be aware of their past struggles. The only saving grace this university has is the professors, who are the only reason they got the stars they have (if I could rate the professors on Yelp independently I would give them 5 stars). The professors here really truly do care. Several will give you their personal number if you have any problems or questions, or make themselves available to you. Honestly I would have a hard time finding a better group of people and respectable professionals. /END rant

There is little to no real teaching, you are expected to teach yourself everything using ATI modules. When you fail and ask for help or a review, they just tell you to "read more and there is no time to review." You can read everything front to back, and the exams still feel designed in a way that makes them almost impossible to pass - with correct choices being marked as incorrect choice (despite having proof that that is what the book says). It is almost as if the exams are rigged. Even many outside adjunct professors have said it feels like students are set up to fail, possibly so the school can keep charging tuition, especially since many of the nursing credits don't transfer elsewhere. The get to simply re-bill the same people for an education that they already paid for and did not receive. They do not take accountability. When 62 out of 65 students FAIL, they blame the students instead of addressing poor teaching AND the fact that they do not provide CLINICAL EXPERIENCE. The same instructors can have failure rates of 90%+ semester after semester, and nothing changes. You are essentially paying for an education that you are not receiving. Clinical experience, which is required, is limited or nonexistent, yet they still charge full tuition. On top of that, the environment is very discouraging. Staff often speak to students in a condescending, demeaning and disrespectful way, like you are a child. Most nursing students are there because they genuinely want to help people, but that passion is not supported here. Instead, it feels like constant stress, hazing and intimidation. Save yourself the time, money, and frustration. Go to a program where students are actually supported, where the graduation rate is high, and where people 90% of students pass the NCLEX. Out of a class of over 60 students, many of whom are repeating the semester, only about 2-3 are currently passing HALF of their classes. That should tell you everything. I'm sharing this to genuinely warn future students. If you're serious about becoming a nurse, choose a different program.

The campus is spread over two block and is near the Pratt institute campus. My impression of this college is very positive. Plus- Small school, personal attention, small classes. 90% of the student body are commuters. Neighbor is historical- Clinton Hill. School is close to the city. The tuition is reasonable for a private school. The story is acessible by subway (G-train) and buses on Mytle Ave. and Dekalb Ave. (This review is from the view poinr of a parent with a college bound child.)

The library and classrooms need a huge makeover because everything looks like a public primary school. 13 block walk from Dekalb ave station. The people are nice, but the school isn't organized. Being a non-matriculated student here, I did not get on the right foot in. I do not take classes physically here but the problems I had to encounter do not make me want to take any in the future. I was charged for a $716 mandatory insurance because I was "placed" on a list with the matriculated students. And I didn't get any prior physical mail until an invoice came to my doorstop. The problem was taken care of, but they need better correspondence to their students before giving students private information to companies without the students consent. Yes, this school is in a historic area, but hey, this is the 21st century and you are in NYC, upgrade please!

He is very welcoming and nice and he even sang a little portion of a song with the Vice President of the Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses. They ordered pizzas and beverages for the staff and the students which was very nice. To be completely honest, I was a bit apprehensive about coming to Mercy College after my previous college closed down. However, I'm glad that I decided to continue my education with Mercy College. There were major renovations that were not addressed previously but Mercy College made sure to repair what needed to fixed to accommodate its students. That speaks volumes to me because it was important to the students. I'm excited about what the year holds for me and my fellow classmates. Way to go Mercy!
